AoP2019: Mentor Legion vs Khornate Genestealer Cult (Gold!)

This is my entry for Armies On Parade 2019 (assuming Saturday’s typhoon doesn’t cause the shop to close early...in which case this is one of my entries for Armies On Parade 2020 :D ):

The Mentor Legion, accompanying a pair of Oreo Malleus inquisitors, bring the hammer down upon a Khornate Genestealer cult on the forgeworld of Nerio Prime.

Inspired by the old vertical dioramas in the Rogue Trader rule book, I made this year’s entry a vertical one. I initially intended it to be, like the old ones, with a solid back, but as many miniatures are facing to their left you wouldn’t see the front of some...so I made it visible from both sides.

The 10th company were tasked with securing the surface and scouting out cult strongholds, which the veteran company then stormed (with their terminators teleporting into the lower levels).

The first two sublevels are an abandoned Imperial cathedral (abandoned as the Chaos-xenos cult has corrupted the populace). The third sub level is a maintenance area linked to the mines below, the tunnels of which the cult has made great use of.

The other side

med_gallery_63428_11269_668992.jpeg

Actually, before the more serious photos: I put Easter eggs in the diorama. Namely the Rogue Trader rule book and recreations of each starter set from the 2nd to 8th editions.

med_gallery_63428_11269_318793.jpeg

And yes, I realise the cult is seriously outnumbered :D

I don’t think the 10th company will make it into the Cathedral levels before the 1st company has finished the job!

More pics in the next post.

Purity seal on the side (with original Mentor Legion owl-crest) and oath of moment by Nisk Ran-Thawll himself (perhaps he’s one of the captains in the diorama).

I must have made the script while I was sleepy because I printed it as chapter 666, rather than 888. 666 is the Grey Knights! I changed the 6s into 8s with a pen.

med_gallery_63428_11269_782418.jpeg

Some more fluff script from the old 40k Compendium.

med_gallery_63428_11269_430326.jpeg

There’s more on the other side but I forgot to take a photo. I will try to take some tonight.

Scouts on the surface. It seems they’ve spotted movement beyond the doors...

Thanks for the comments and likes.

It hits so many nostalga feels it hurts... Love it.

You, my fellow hedonite of Slaanesh, should understand best that pleasure and pain are one, no? :D

More pics soon.

Unfortunately we have a huge typhoon inbound.

Parade Day is the 19th but I won’t be able to go that day. I can submit my entry up to a week before...but the only day I can go is this Saturday: the day the typhoon hits. Public transport will apparently be stopped. Heck, GW probably won’t open.

So it’s looking more and more likely that this is my 2020 entry... :(

Well, it looks like I can juuuuust get to GW on Sunday morning to put my entry in.

Here are two hybrids waiting to ambush anyone who comes through the door, with flamer and shotgun.

med_gallery_63428_11269_1347212.jpeg

On the first sub level the red-TDA clad inquisitor leads the sternguard against hybrids including a hellblade-wielding magus (I’ll probably move him to a more visible spot when I submit my entry at GW).

med_gallery_63428_11269_1600740.jpeg

On the second sub level the tactical terminators and the black-armoured inquisitor clash at close range with purestrains (the brains of one are blown out at near point blank range by the squad’s assault cannon) and hybrids.

med_gallery_63428_11269_1032927.jpeg

On the third sub level the assault terminators and terminator librarian are fighting against the cult. One hybrid holds aloft an acursed standard showing the cults twisted loyalties.

med_gallery_63428_11269_509503.jpeg

med_gallery_63428_11269_518859.jpeg

And in the mine tunnel beneath the cathedral and maintenance level two Mentor Legion terminators - a captain and chaplain - are joined by a venerable dreadnought and chaplain dreadnought (the TDA chaplains predecessor?) in confronting a cult rockgrinder, locus sniper and a hideous corruption of a tech priest.

I’ll probably swap the position of those last two minis when I submit it, so the Magus is more visible and is at the back, commanding the hybrids forward.

I didn’t get a pic of the ceiling of the cathedral 1st level but will try to do so sometime. I didn’t want to try and glue floor pieces up there so had to find something else. I had a load of wooden stirrers for AoS modelling and it struck me that, on a Mars-like forgeworld wood would be exceedingly rare and expensive. What better to form a ceiling over this tomb of martyrs to the Imperium?

The hybrid squad leader has a power axe. All the better for taking skulls in the name of Father Khorne.

med_gallery_63428_11269_182202.jpeg

I put some looking out of open sections to -hopefully give the impression that it’s not just a straight corridor, that other passages lead off to the sides.

Top work! This reminds me of the good old days... I think there was a similar diorama of Novamarine and Blood Drinkers Terminators clearing a Space Hulk from 1989 that I spent ages just staring at!

Oh.... And I love the Easter eggs!!

Aye, Novamarines in blue with red trim. Beautiful!

I’ll be submitting my entry tomorrow in the end, and not having to postpone it a year. Thank the Gods!

So next year is my Snakebites for 40k, and the Battle of Blista Bakk for AoS :tu:

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks!

I took a few dozen shots with the digi-SLR just now to keep, as I’ll be smashing up the diorama itself (not the minis!) this weekend.

As I did with my Slaaneshi marines diorama base and my IG one in previous years.

There’s simply no space to keep them in our apartment.

Space must be made for next year’s entry! :)

BLASPHEMY!!!!!! Have you never considered selling them?! That would make  a great multi level Kill Team board.

Probably end up with a big choke point on the middle floor :D

I would be worried about the fragility, getting it to the buyer safely... and don’t really have the time to set that up and get it done.

Pulling out the plastic terrain to reuse and ditching the rest: I have time for that.

Tremendous idea and execution. Well won and deserved!

Also love the ancient inquisitor sculpt!

I had to put those two in there ;)

Hearing this hurts my heart, but it's completely understandable.
