While not as brokenly durable as the Iron Hands....  let me paint a picture:

lVnNRWseBuSsUPOcJOKgipU4vL2bSDSWeYS4OMC1

Leviathan with 2x Storm Cannon Array's

Imperial Fist Chapter Master with Eye of Hypnoth

Running in Devastator Doctrines....

20x Str7 AP -3 Damage Flat 3  shots per turn ( against vehicles and buildings)

Rerolling misses, Rerolling 1's to wound

Slap a techmarine near him...

Use 1 CP a turn for DUTY ETERNAL ( halving  incoming damage)

that's 1x dead Executioner or 2x dead Eldar flyers per turn with plenty of overkill in case of cold dice...

( generates 28.8 wounds per shooting phase on the latter case...)

"Hello Forgeworld, I'd like to order a Leviathan , and a Xiphon Interceptor....."

I'm just not a huge fan of that limited range, the need to screen out charging threats, and the lack of mobility.

But effective point and click on a mindlessly easy to use unit? Pretty great bonus...until the inevitable points change lol

The Leviathan is clearly incredibly badass. No question about it.

I think I prefer the Deredeo though. It’s about 30% cheaper than the leviathan but has 36” range instead of 24” – which is a vast improvement in practice. It gets +1 to hit flyers if it stands still. S8 on the main guns means it’s better at wounding the majority of the things it’s likely to be shooting at and ap-2 (in devastator doctrine, which it will be). And it still has 14 wounds and a built in 5++, so while obviously it’s nowhere near Leviathan toughness, it’s certainly not soft either. You can even give it a 5++ bubble to protect other units, or else an overpriced extra missile launcher.

You obviously get less shooting with a Deredeo than a leviathan when it gets to fully unload. But my experience is that it’s relatively rare for that to happen. A combination of the Leviathan’s range and relative ease of tying the thing up in combat makes it pretty hard to get many rounds of shooting from it. That damage vs Eldar flyers drops away pretty fast if the Leviathan has moved and the flyer pops lightning reflexes – especially for an Alaitoc one. -4 to hit is a problem.

If in a dreadnought drop pod it becomes a boogie man in the sky

Does anyone know whether the Fists Crimson are going to get the +1 damage against vehicles and buildings also, because I’ve a nasty idea for a tourney list that involves two or three relic leviathans in pods with double grav flux bombards. These weapons are great at horde clearing with an xtra D3 shots for every additional five models in target unit and +1 to hit if out numbered with Crimson Fists tactic (model already has BS+ so can negate penalty for moving or obscured etc), 2 damage so can deal with Primaris and terminators, 5 damage against titanic, monster and vehicle units (6 against vehicles when devastator doctrine is in effect), and 3 against buildings when devastator doctrine is in effect. Add incursors or infiltrators to taste for area denial, CP batteries, objective grabbing. Expensive list though. And you wouldn’t have friends for very long if you were in a beer and pretzel environment. Edited by Captain Smashy Pants

That's a bunch of expensive resin to throw friendships away with.

thanks for the info on the Daredo, I'm thinking of incorporating it into my army instead of bringing a Xiphon... I feel the Xiphon might get isolated too easily... whereas the Daredo can give a tasty 5++ to My Executioner.

The main thing with the Leviathan, is that it is a great tank... I will be running a list of 6 Inceptors, 5 Cataphractii Terminators, a Jump Smash Captain and 6 Aggressors... so the list is about dominating the centre of the board and putting out lost of Dakka while a units focus on anti armour/flyer duties.

The Aggressors will screen the Leviathan from assault, providing dakka and Overwatch charge protection

Nah I’d never do it. In fact I usually write lists that are sub optimal because I like including units that aren’t the best but I feel are fun. In a moment of weakness I got carried away imagining drinking the tears of some WAAC d bag with their meta breaking list. Edited by Captain Smashy Pants

I think storm cannons might be scarier than grav flux bombards. 20 shots, all with an extra point of damage, become kind of horrendous.

I think there’s a strong case for running a successor with long range marksmen if you want to go for leviathans. It really brings the heavy flamers into play and the extra 3” would probably help quite a bit for the storm cannons too. The flamers are also D2 against vehicles in devastator doctrine.

There are some really good, cheap heavy support choices available now with TFCs and Eliminators. So the relic issue isn’t anything like as problematic as before. In theory you could run a spearhead featuring three leviathans pretty easily for around 1k, plus the cost of your HQ.
