Dark Angels Deathwing - Work in Progress

Deathwing Terminators

With the inevitable release of Dark Angels coming soon, I've been inspired to put together a classic Deathwingesque 30k army. I'm planning on using a collection of old metal deathwing terminators and landspeeders. The list is slightly restricted with wargear options due to using older models. I want to go with a Weapons of Old Night feel so I hope my opponent is ok with my lack of volkite modelling. This list lands about 350 points short of 2500 which is my goal. I'd love some suggestions, totally stumped with what Rite of War to take. Cheers

While I really love the older ranges of models, including the metal Deathwing Terminators, they will just look hilariously small compared to Mk III and / or Mk IV Legionnaires.

You'd have to use RTB-9 plastic marines along with them to create the illusion of them being normal sized.

That being said:

PotL and 'Covenant of Death' (the current Dark Angels LA special rule) are bad bedfellows. I'd avoid that combination at all costs.

Also, there's no reason to run PotL at all with your current list, since it includes Tactical Squads anyways. Why ?

Your Legion Terminator squads have only one anti-armour option each, a singular Thunder Hammer, that's not enough.

Your Praetor & Terminator Command Squad have no anti-armour at all, this might cost them dearly.

Stasis Shells need to be taken with a (Combi-) Grenade Launcher IIRC, and can't be launched from a Harness, but I might be mistaken.

I can see the theme you're going for here, and I actually really like it, scouting Voxes, Mortis Dreads, Speeders etc., but you'll need to specialise your infantry units some more and swap out those Tac Squads for something befitting PotL (I.E. Veterans).

Or you could ditch the RoW entirely, which is what I would do due to the aforementioned reason, and go with a different RoW or no RoW at all.

You're right about the size difference but I'm not too worried as I already have the original metal models painted and good to go. Maybe they are squats?..

I didn't mention I'd be going with PotL, apologies if I placed that in a previous edit. I'm not a major fan of veterans as I find tactical squads far more cheap and expendable as scorers.

My two terminator squads are kitted out differently, I see the tartaros squad fulfilling an anti infantry role while the cataphractii are kitted to take on armour. I do agree that they are not overly versatile and would benefit from an additional chain fist.

I'd be deepstriking that Praetor + Command squad right near an enemy infantry deathstar. They would be avoiding armour at all costs hence why they are equip with pure anti infantry. You're right though, maybe one chainfist would prevent dreads from tying them up.

Thanks for the Stasis update, that's a shame. I was hoping it'd give the Prae and Command squad an initiative boost.

I was planning on avoiding PotL despite having a terminator heavy list. I feel it's an overused RoW.

Thanks for the feedback

Here's a revised version which fills up to 2500pts. Mixed around and removed some of the volkite options plus added a chainfist to command squad for dreadnought insurance. To maximise my scoring units, I've stuck with bare-bones tacticals, supported by a command predator to boost morale (I understand vex do the same but I like the Pred option). Will aim to no scatter Deep Strike all of the speeders and pods using Vox's and the Damocles - should saturate the opponents infantry and armour while gaining board control on the objectives. Mortis and Predator will hold down the skies and long range AV. Tacticals should provide the bodies in late gain for holding VP's. Fairly happy with this but still open to an criticism. Cheers

I'm not sure that the Recon marines add much to your list but I assume you are wanting them to reduce scatter on your droppods but not sure you really need it... perhaps the points could be better used in filling out 1 of the tactical squads (and drop its Rhino) to get you more 'boots on the ground'.  Rhino tac squad takes the far objective while the 15(?) man squad holds home base.

Don't DA get acid rounds? -  so you could also swap out the Recon squad for a Heavy Bolter Heavy Support Squad

I would try to add at least one chainfist on one unit of termies, as said before your recon squad won't bring you a lot there, a bit expensive to bring just 2 dreadcalws that can already move flat out on the turn they arrive from DS if you scatter. (and the damocles can already help you with the scatter)

And after that they won't bring a lot of firepower, unless you have a lot of them bolter are a bit crappy... To be honest recon squad are a bit meeeh at the moment unless you use some trick to make them a bit better and DAs don't have access to those tricks.

If you want to be a bit thematic try to add a jetbike squad, they mix very well with acid rounds !
