Hello, I've been making a homebrewed spacewolf army for the better part of 2-3 months now where instead of wolves, the theme is Spiders! To keep with it being accepted by Games Workshop in games, the range is from the forest goblins in Warhammer Fantasy. This is less about tournament fights so much as a model hobby and casual play army. Also... I haven't thought of a name for them yet, was thinking either the Skulltulas or the Widowmakers or something along those lines.

HQ

Rune Priest in Runic Terminator Armour with Frost Fury, Runic Staff and Psychic Hood. (Warlord)

Wolf Lord with Power sword and bolt pistol.

191 points

ELITES

Wolf Guard Terminators with five Power Fists and five Combi-Plasma Guns.

Wulfen Dreadnought with Blizzard Shield, Fenrisian Greataxe and two Heavy Flamers. (proxied with Forest Goblin Arachnarok or Chieftain enormous Spider)

393 points

TROOPS

Grey Hunters x10 with two Plasma Guns, Sargent has a Power Sword and Plasma Pistol.

Rhino Transport with two Storm Bolters.

For tactics, the rune priest is with the terminator squad and the lord with the two long fang squads. The wulfin dread is behind the two fenrisian wolves squad as a fast paced harassment force while the marine portion is mid-long range fire support.

I should have pictures for the army available in time.

I've just finished the army earlier today, I'll be posting pictures for it before a battle to get a feel for them.

If it helps tide any anticipation, here's an idea for the paint scheme.

This looks awesome! What are your plans on the spider dread? will you be attaching/converting weapons etc. on it? I'm no longer familiar with how the homebrew process works with 40k, but this seems pretty A-ok and I would love to read a batrep (or some lore!) about these guys!

They're essentially a Space Wolf codex compliant army in terms of rules, army loadout and units. The only difference is the proxy of everything wolf themed with arachnids. The giant spider I tested in debut was simply for shock and awe purposes for my army's first reveal and I will most likely shelf it for larger games to be portrayed as Murderfang or even Logan Grimnar. (In which case I may add a marine model with a power axe and storm bolter riding it) I have a smaller, more base compliant model for the Wulfen dreadnought that will still achieve the same effect.

As for lore, I had originally planned it where they are part of the cursed 21st Founding where the Adeptus Mechanicus created them from Space Wolf gene seed in an attempt to 'snip out' the lupus genetics from the DNA tampering by Leman Russ 10,000 years ago. Calling themselves the 'Wolf Spiders' and given the jungle lush death world of J'ba Fofi as a recruiting planet. The chapter very quickly found a new alpha predator to base themselves off of from the indigenous arachnids, whom the locals call Skull Recluses. With centuries of domestication and use of pheromones to lure and control the massive spiders, the chapter uses them as expendable attack animals; seeing no concern in how many may be slain in the process as they reproduce in large numbers back on J'ba Fofi to replenish their swarms. Several other chapters see the use of the 'attack-dog' tactics of the Wolf Spiders as shameful or downright cowardly, but the chapter often remarks that a fox hunter without a fox hound brings back very few pelts to gloat about.

Pragmatic in their tactics, the wolf spiders shy away from over specialisation and employ different ambush and bait/switch doctrines to defeat their enemies, preferring to time their strikes for when their targets are most vulnerable. Indoctrination into the Wolf Spiders is a very direct process where inductees are subjected to the venom of a male skull recluse (easily spotted by the bleached bone coloured skull on their abdomens), which is very well known to be not just lethal to anyone unprepared but intensely psychotropic, testing the inductee's physical and mental limits. If the subject dies or is driven mad in the process, the bodies are tossed to the swarm hatcheries to be finished off. If they manage to survive, the inductees will be regularly exposed to the venom on a monthly basis to build an immunity to the toxin, eventually having their belcher's glands be filled naturally with the toxin from the over exposure.

Like all the 21st cursed founding, the chapter is held under high scrutiny by the Inquisition; in case of any potential deviation or sign of corruption as their other sibling chapters have proven that imperfect hands mould imperfect warriors. So far in the last 4000 years of service they have proven both loyal and untouched... For now.

Holy cow! Love the theme! Haha I would love to play against that giant spider horde, just for the psychological fear factor. :)

Not to be confused with the Dessert Ravens, a traitor chapter dedicated solely to pursuing all things covered in an excess of sugar.

I have made plans for the long term, expand it all to a 2000 point army and make subtle changes. The massive spider will eventually be a proxy for Logan Grimnar, the smaller giant spider I'll buy two more and have them be proxy's for thunderwolf cavalry. And eventually have a proper dreadnought but still keep the arachnid theme. In time it should be impressive.
