Killers with the Cross - Gederas' Crusade

I suppose I should introduce myself.

You might have seen me around the forum in various threads. I've often thought about building a Black Templars army for YEARS (seriously: I was first introduced to 40k in my Freshman year of high school via the first Ciaphas Cain omnibus, and that was in '08) but never really did so. As I said in the 'Why the Black Templars' thread:

I love the Knightly aesthetic, which is also why I like the Dark Angels. Whereas the Templars have a much more zealous aspect than the Dark Angels secretive Arthurian Knights, the Templars are the Crusades-era Knights. Their colour scheme and symbols of white-on-black, with red and gold as accents, is just aesthetically pleasing to me. Because it's simple, but very effective and visually distinct. I love the fact that the Templars just simply do not give up (seems to be a trait for the sons of Dorn. Stubborn bastards all of them ). I love the schizoid 'close combat over guns' aspect of Marines, and Templars are the ones who epitomize that the most outside of World Eaters. Speaking of the close combat: Despite the fact that they like it, there's nothing stopping them from using other tactics, which is good for me, because I really, really, REALLY like tanks, flyers and dreadnoughts (seriously: I was contemplating Iron Hands for Loyalists for a while.... Then the new codex came out and torpedoed that idea right quick, and for chaos it was Iron Warriors because of them focusing on armoured/mechanized warfare).

Their using of unique heraldry gives everyone an individual feel, despite all being Space Marines, who can sometimes come off as generic. It's why there's going to be a lot of bare heads in my army. Both for there to be a individuality amongst the forces, and also to show off the variance of skin tones and appearances because of their wide recruitment pool.

Also, this:

If I had to make one sales pitch, i'd say that if you're collecting Black Templars, your force is always canon. With so many crusades out there every one of player's forces can be real. My crusade? Totally exists in the game. Your crusade? Same. For what it's worth, there may be actual Marshal Laeroth somewhere among the stars. And they are different things, not like 'oh, I'm collecting 3rd company blood angels and you have 3rd company blood angels, let's pretend it's a training combat between lore-wise' or seeing endless Feiros vs Feiros matches.

Well, no longer.

I currently have 10 Intercessors with Auto-Bolt Rifles, 5 with Stalker Bolt Rifles, a Primaris Chaplain and a Deredeo Dreadnought. My plan is to get Dark Imperium, Know no Fear and two boxes of Intercessors, which will give me just under 2k of Primaris to play around with.Aside from that, I will also be getting the FW The Mark III Legion Starter Collection, as I like Mark III armour's aesthetic and it fits the Knightly theme of the Templars.

Those purchases will be supplemented by a rather large PopGoesTheMonkey in December

60x Maltese Cross : Shoulder Insignia pack x4
10x Maltese Cross - Prime:1 PACs
10x Maltese Cross - G:4a Shoulder Pads
10x Maltese Cross - G:4a Shoulder Pads
10x Maltese Cross - G:4a Shoulder Pads
11x Energy Sword: Templar Crusader
Maltese Cross - Flat Vehicle Insignia pack
Maltese Cross: Atlas Pattern Full Kit
10x Templar Mech - G:3a Shoulder Pads

I will then expand into other units (I'm waiting on PA2 with the Black Templars stuff to get anything major like the named characters), most likely Aggressors and a Redemptor. Obviously the Land Raider Crusader will come, but I need to figure out what'll be riding in it.

I'll leave this post with the first two of my Black Templars I've fully painted, Brother Bors and Chaplain Andreas

Ambitious project Brother Gederas can't wait to see your progress!

Krash

Thanks! And you and me both

Also :cuss I just realized I missed the Service Stud on Bors' head. I hate those things so much, I never notice them until after I take pictures of the models

Looking awesome so far - I'm excited to follow this project going forward.

Thanks!

I'm hoping/planning that next month is when I can order the Legion Mark III starter set so I can get my non-Primaris started. But the Feast of Bones reveal made me think I MAAAAAY be ordering that towards the end of the month

Very cool. I saw your Chaplain in Sons of Dorn and happy to see a Crusade forming around him! A fitting start.

Good luck with the Crusade, you've got a lot of painting ahead by the look of it.

Thanks! Hopefully I'll have something to show in the next month, but I'm trying to get my CoC vow done. All the trim.....

Maybe the Deredeo. I'm unsure as of yet.

Very nice, the black skin tone on your chaplain is alot more convincing than most of the stuff we see around for salamanders that ends up being shades of dark grey.

Thanks! Though with Salamanders.... That's the point  They're SUPPOSED to be coal-black :P

For some reason I always like to see chaplains with their helmets off. I don't know why that is, considering it's their iconic feature. I blame helsreach and Grimaldus' kind eyes haha

Yeah, I hear you. It's always interesting to see a bare-headed Chaplain. Mainly because you need to make it obvious the Marine in question is a Chaplain and not any other character.

  • 2 weeks later...

after the introduction of contrast paint - i love to paint guys without helmets - although I love my Black Templars especially because of the Knightly aspect (where a helmet is very important here)

I've actually learned decent ways to paint skin, so that also helped me with painting faces

My plan is to have an equal amount of helmets and bare heads on my Templars, and I've been looking at Forge World for helmet options. Ironically, the Ultramarines helmet set is one of the most 'knightly' looking out of the head sets

MK III Iron helmets look really good on primaris, I also like the spellcrow templar helmet Set.

Oh I'm well aware how good they look. I've seen people using them on Primaris since Primaris came out

My plan is to use the Imperial Fists, Ultramarines and Dark Angels helmets from Forge World to give the Primaris a more 'knightly' look.

Way ahead of you.

But seriously

Aside from the helmet crest on one, these helmets look way more like Knight helmets than Greco-Roman ones.
