Welcome to the Necron Unit of the Week Series!

Each week a different unit will be highlighted for discussion until we have amalgamated a full list of our available options and their relevant tactics as 8th edition evolves. We already have a few previous entries but things change as FAQs and Chapter Approved books get released and we playtest new ideas so please feel free to reopen a topic when new options become relevant for discussion.

Please keep in mind this isn't to lament the status of featured units or compare them to others but to try and find their potential for all types of gameplay. Comments that do not adhere to this goal will be removed as they are not constructive to the topic.

This week’s unit is:

As a loose guide, here are some questions we could answer to help out any who happen upon our metallic corner of the B&C:

  • What units do you use with Imotekh?

  • Have you made use of the Bloodswarm Nanoscarabs ability?

  • How useful has the Lord of the Storm ability been?

Now over to you!

I like Imotekh. If I run Sautekh I like proxying him. You get a lot for his cost. He's most useful for being able to use MWBD on any Necron, not tied to Dynasty, or twice if it's on Sautekh. Call the Storm is not something to count on - I assume it will fail (it certainly has enough times in the past) so anything it does is a nice bonus. Bonus CP is always nice too.

Because his MWBD isn't tied to Sautekh he is one of the very few things that can buff Praetorians. Now, if only he could keep up with them!

I think the biggest downside to Imotekh is that he's a fine cast model. I'm reluctant to buy him now because I hope he gets a plastic model sometime and I just don't think fine cast is worth the hassle. I'd run him more if he did come out in plastic.

He is pretty much my go to lord.

Farly survivable, decent buffing and ok damage output.

Use the storm to do D6 mortal wounds then drop the +1 to hit strat.

Use him with 2 units of tesla immortals.

His necroscarab thing is pointless, mostly because if you are taking them there are better dynastys to take them with

Can mortal wounds trigger Methodical Destruction? The stratagem stipulates "an unsaved wound" and in that instance saves are bypassed.

If it does as you say that could be a very handy tool offered by Lord of the Storm.

Cant see what it wouldn't

It can still be stopped by a feel no pain roll though

A 'feel no pain' is explicitly stated not to be a save, though. The FAQ ruling on QS (which goes off when a save is failed) said that because MWs can't be saved they don't trigger QS, even with the stratagem that makes it possible to negate 1 damage wounds. That would imply that MWs are not 'unsaved' because no saves can be taken. They might rule in an FAQ you can use it this way, but the precedent is not in favor.

I've seen quite a few people play it that way but since QS can't stop MW because of that exact same wording I'm thinking it's not the correct way.

Except QS cant stop MW cause they dont have a damage value. Theyre resolved 1 at a time, and since you cant roll less than a one, QS doesnt work. So I dont see why it wouldnt work.

You can roll less than a one on QS because there is a stratagem to reduce the roll. And as I said the FAQ states that it's the fact the MWs aren't unsaved that prevents you from using it.
