Blood of the Phoenix Book Questions

what is the deal with the blood of the pheonix book, I haven't bought it yet as I just bought the models from ebay as I don't want the dark eldar models, is it just more strats etc.?  Or are there rules that are specific?

There are various things in it for CWE (and DE).

  • DIY craftworld traits
  • Alternative Exrach powers (Fast Shot looks really good for Dark Reapers).
  • New rules for Jain Zar
  • Points reductions for Ynnari characters

Jain Zar was already a beast, can't wait to see what else she gets.

She gets a new "Storm of Silence" ability.

Turning her into a chaff blender is fairly cool but clearing chaff is not usually a problem for Eldar. The trouble is that this replaces her old "Disarm ability". :( Jain Zar has no Invulnerable save so the ability to negate an enemy weapon used to be vital to her survival. Captain Smash being forced to fight her with his bolt pistol instead of his Thunder Hammer was pretty comical. To me, the new ability is not as good as her old one.

Yeah the disarm rule is too good to replace, I mean if a character only has the one weapon, its next to impossible for them to kill her, I mean Khârn can still kill her but that's just because he's got an insane amount of attacks, though it would still be hard for him to kill her.  She only has to be afraid of characters like Guilliman or Abaddon.  Love her new model as well.  I wish I wasn't already painting up some dire avengers otherwise I'd be painting her up right this minute.

I can only assume that Kharandras is going to get turned into the character killer of the two.

I actually think that there is a niche for a whole new aspect there... the aspect of the assassin.... low no. of attacks, high AP & high Damage low to medium strenght (ie A1, S4 AP-4, D D3+3)

scorpions are the the stealthy hunters but not all assassins.

I think the scorpions could be great at doing assassinations, it would also make their lore even that cooler.

Yes it could, just depends how much of a re-write they want to do of the scorpians as a whole...I mean the new powers dont really lend them selves the character hunting as a specialisation, so easier just to write a new aspect....

I've pondered this myself. I hate having to take the shield arm if I want the invul. But then your stuck with sun canon or sword. A fixed front like knights would be the real answer in my opinion but wouldn't be Eldar fluffy.

It's kinda already what they are, though. They're hunters. They might not be focussed on killing characters, but the Asurya don't always match up 100% with the purpose of their Aspects (see Maugan Ra with his Maugetar compared to the Dark Reapers).

Bear in mind, I never said that the Striking Scorpions would become the "character killing" Aspect, just that Karandras might get his rules changed to focus on that in his inevitable redo, similar to how Jain Zars rules changed.

I'm a little disappointed in the various traits.  The fact we didn't really get a lot of the 'parts' of the published Craftworlds made options is a shame.  I'd have LOVED to have the half of Biel Tan letting you re-roll 1s on Shuriken weapons, for instance.  (Because I hate the other half!  +1 Ld is the most worthless trait there is... especially in an army with small units like Eldar).  I would really love to do a re-roll 1s + Superior Shuriken, and all.  And sadly, a lot of the traits probably won't see use, they're just not worth using even in a casual environment since many of the published worlds are just straight up better at the same thing.

I'm also very disappointed in the Ynnari, other thn the points drop.  Mostly just how you make armies for them, can we say  convoluted?  And worse, it's not allowed to use Jain Zar in an Ynnari Detachment despite the fact she uses the Strength From Death ability in this very book!  COME ON!!!  (I actually sent that feedback to the WH40k feedback email... doubt it will matter, but it's a silly oversight)

Exarch Powers:  Cool.  Though most will never see use.  Still, there's a lot to like.  I'll have less CP now.  I do wish an Autach could take an Exarch Power or two though!

Though speaking of that... It's silly that Phoenix Lords don't get to use some of them!

So ultimately, while there's a decent amount to like in the rules here.  It really feels like it was a bit rushed.  It needed about another 10 pages of rules to flesh things out and feel better.

...then there's the fluff.  Which is annoying.  Talk about a book that finds a way to have the Eldar LOSE left and right.  Come on!  This is a book that makes the Eldar somehow lose even when they're fighting EACH OTHER!  Even when they win they somehow lose.  Just annoying, and failed to capitalize on the Ynnari.

Nobody wins in a war, let alone a civil war...

Its all about the sacrifices and if they are worth achieving your goal. This goes doubly so for eldar who are dying out, compared to humans who breed like... humans.

Eldar are a tragic faction. They live on past glories and while exceptionally powerful, knowledgeable, etc they can never ever win; only delay the inevitable and just maybe fix a mistake they made thousands of years earlier.
