Space Wolf Name Generator

Recommended Posts

So as I said in my Drakeslayers thread, while I had stalled out on paint work, I developed a name generator for my Wolves in the vein of GW's, but I find those a little lacking (36 names vs. the 216 I included in mine, without counting the variations in choice) - and I wanted to share it here, in case anyone else might find it useful.

The way the first part (given name) works is thus - the number code is the result of three d6s in a row (I personally tend to roll three different colored dice at once and review the three results to see which name seems to fit better). This is separated from the name by the first dash.

In the name, you will find a group of letters surrounded by parentheses and separated by forward slashes - these represent choices for the given name, and the resulting name will still have the same meaning, just with different spellings. If the group is in bold, then it is a mandatory choice - leaving it out would alter the name or make the name meaningless; if the group is in italics, then the choice is optional, even as a single letter - leaving it off will not change the meaning.

Finally, after the second dash, is the meaning (or approximate) as best that I could find from many sources I worked from (both physical texts and Internet), but I will admit that there are some (to many) that could be off. I typically kept to Old Norse names, but there are a few of Scottish, Irish, Old German, or even made up origins included.

The Epithet is generated by the result of two rolls on the following table - if you get a duplicate name element, re-roll one of the two (each roll will be two dice). Depending on the results, you may want to join the names with "of" or "of the" to make it sound more interesting. Alternatively, you can use "of" or "of the" and only roll one name element.

1,2 - Air/Storms

If the name combination doesn't sound good, then just re-roll - I tried my best to keep "Wolf Wolfson" and the like from occurring too much - if I did my statistics right, the name generator should generate over 800,000 unique names - although some of those aren't going to sound great.

It's a bit complicated to generate names this way, but I prefer it to the more limited set up GW has with their tables.

And if anyone has a good idea on how to compress this information on the board and make it look better, please let me know!

Enjoy all and I hope it can see some use for folks!

This is actually pretty good. I would like to point out that sometimes from old Norse to modern English spellings will change. My name Caldersson also can be spelt kalterson, as C in modern English can be a hard K sound. Additionally old Norse T has a cross between D and T.

So if you don't see exactly what you want look up a alternate spelling.

Thanks Blaire.

Thanks Blaire.

Very welcome! Definitely tried to provide some of the alternate name spellings where I knew them/could verify them - I couldn't seem to find a way to do a 'thorn' or 'eth/edh' frictives on the keyboard I have access to, although they are probably present in the font.

Although I stupidly just thought of looking it up online and boom: Þ/þ and Ð/ð. Ah well - if anyone wants to throw those into the spellings as well, it does make them interesting.

I did consider for the Given Name table, making it a roll for a first half name component portion and a separate roll for a second half name component, but given the variability of what actually goes together to make a usable name that way, I figured a straight roll was probably better for a whole name. You could easily expand the first table to 1296 names and use four dice to roll on it, and there were some recorded Space Wolf names in the lore that you can't make with this table, but I got about as much of it as I could.

So for me to be clear...

First post:

1 - Roll 3D6 for the name

Second Post:

2 - Roll 2D6 on the first table to roll again 1d6 on the apropiate table

The final name is the result of a 3d6 + 2d6 + 1d6 ? or I'm missing somenthing?

First post:

1 - Roll 3D6 for the name

Second Post:

2 - Roll 2D6 on the first table to roll again 1d6 on the apropiate table

First/Given Name list (1st post) - 3d6 (I record all three digits but not necessarily the order, then roll for the epithet, because sometimes different names work better together)

Epithet (2nd post):

Roll 2d6 twice, get the two name elements (i.e. Enemies, Internals or Torso, To Wound/Harm)

Then roll a d6 on each of the element charts (for the above examples - Dragon/Drake/Wyrm, Blood or Hide/Skin, Smite®)

Then it is up to you which of the choice you want and in which order (so you might have Drakeblood/Bloodwyrm or Hidesmiter/Smiteskin, for the Second you could even change Smite to past tense for Smoteskin - maybe the guy takes a lot of hits and is scarred, but makes it through)

Like how you added Calder ;)

 Nah, that one was already there - sorry bud!

I found a couple of ®'s I had previously missed, and bolded a couple of selections that I had accidentally labeled with italics instead (even though for the name to make sense, it should have been required). Valdr/Valder was one of them.

Hmm how did this get unpinned..

 I’m glad y’all like it!

Jarl, I believe it was added to the Space Wolves Resources and was unpinned then. It’s under the Space Wolves Background and Lore section, IIRC.

Hmm how did this get unpinned..

 I’m glad y’all like it!

Jarl, I believe it was added to the Space Wolves Resources and was unpinned then. It’s under the Space Wolves Background and Lore section, IIRC.

Took me longer than it maybe should have to figure that out as well, and why I edited my original post here.

This and the background/great company generator have kept me pretty enjoyably busy with fluff stuff

Not sure if it's just my system, but I can only see one name on there - I like Otto Terrorhammer though (sounds very Smash Lord-ish)!

Cool beans - it is probably just my system then (unfortunately I’m not getting a new one by refreshing, closing the browser, or clearing my cache, so it’s clearly something my system isn’t doing), and I really hope it’s working for everyone else and glad folks are enjoying the names!
