Adding a dash more Primaris to the Rout

My Primaris units continue to perform well on the battlefield and I am consiering what to add next. I have a unit of Hellblasters who usually accompany Bjorn to add some impressive firepower. I have a couple of units of DI Intercessors with Seargents converted with Chainswords that I plan to use as Objective campers.

But I am looking for something that can operate in a similar capacity to my Grey Hunters in the mid-field. I am considering a couple of 5-man packs of Intercessors with auto-bolt rifles and pack leaders with power fists. 15 shots, even when Advancing looks pretty good and 3 PF attacks that hit on a 3+ in the first round of combat will help give them a little punch in melee.

Alternatively, should I be looking at Incursors/Infiltrators? The price premium for Infiltrators seems high when they only get their half their benefits against Deep Striking armies. But Incursors look like they might be quite good. Decent infiltrating Troops and they only cost 2ppm more than Intercessors. Downside is slightly weaker guns and no ability to give the pack leader a melee weapon.

Any thoughts welcome.

My suggestion would be auto bolt rifle intercessors. They're fairly quick and once they get to the mid field are solid. I would consider waiting for chapter approved before equipping the power fists because thunder hammers are an option in the marine book. IMO they look better, and are much easier to convert (vanguard kit has several good ones). In addition 3 damage is alot better than d3.

Good advice and goes in the direction I am currently leaning. Whilst I like Hammers, they are significantly more expensive and will likely remain the preserve of characters with enough attacks to really get the mileage out of them.

On the other hand, if we get the Veteran Intercessor stratagem, that might tip the balance as it would be 4 attacks....

I am personally going to add an Infiltrator Squad to my army. Their infiltration is valuable, and anti-deepstrike will come in handy often.

They won't perform the same role as Grey Hunters, though.

What did the Grey Hunters do in your army that you want to keep in a new unit?

If they were mostly objective grabbers, Intercessors (with auxilliary grenade launcher) are an upgrade. If they were filled with plasma and hunted elite units, I don't see a primaris troops choice that can take over.

With shock attack your already at 4 though and the +1 to hit is a big. That said a power fist and an auxiliary GL does make a nice rounded point total.

One thing to consider is that BA are in PA3,if they get a combat doctrine style system we will too. That may influence the decision between the unit types.

I don't want to replace my Grey Hunters, they put in solid work and are still better than Tacticals in my experience. However find them a bit brittle, particularly when I am using them to take centre-ground objectives, hence my desire for something a little more resilient to back them up. My hunters still do great work and I normally keep them loaded with plasma and melta, I don't plan to drop them. But some 2-wound "big brothers" would help in terms of body count.

Primaris now have 3 Troop choices available and I am just mulling over which one will work best alongside the Hunters. ABRs and PFs look good on paper and I am leaning in their direction at the moment.

ABR Intercessors sounds like exactly what you need right now.

The IPL having a PF is to taste; consider if you have / need the mobility you can get out of the unit, and consider if the Impulsor might add it. If so, the transport capacity is either six or eight, depending on the thing's gear, and if it can move Primaris in Mark X armor, go for it!

If not, five IC's with IPL having a PF and ABR's works just fine.

I am definitely leaning in favour of 2 x 5-man Intercessors with ABRs and AG. The only thing that has put me off starting is the imminent PA6. I want to wait and see if there is anything particularly tasty before I commit.

Anyone have any opinion on Power Fist vs Thunder Hammers on the IPL? Given that they are rather over-priced on characters now, some hidden THs on my Intercessors looks pretty good on paper. IPLs get 4 attacks on the first round (or 5 if they are veterans). Are hammers worth the extra 8 points? I think they would be slightly easier to model.

Wait a couple more weeks and we can give you better advice. ABR May be the way to go. “On the move” marines will benefit from them. But i can’t remember if you can use true grit strat on those.

I’m hoping we get thunder hammers. They’re worth the points. That 3 damage is so much better and reliable.
