Coming Back

Recommended Posts

Well I am thinking of coming back to 40K, I started back in the Rouge Trader Day and played for years. But overtime it got harder and harder to find players in my "neck of the woods" of Ohio (Clinton County), but I ran into a player at work and he has a small group started.

But I am not sure which Army to try, when I played the most (2nd - 4th Ed) was CHAOS!!! But when I first started it was Space Marines, the only others I have tried was Orks, and Necrons but my heart leans towards our power armor guys and out of those The Death Guard looks nice.

So which army would you all recommend?

Welcome back to the hobby :) It sounds like you're interested in Death Guard to me, they've got a lot of new models so there's plenty for you to see. It depends on what play style and aesthetic you're after, could you give us some clues on what you may be interested in? Then we can throw some army ideas around for you :tu:

Well lets see, I have always been a big Fan of Troops and like having a lot of them, never been much of a vehicle person execpt for my Dreads,I love my Dreads. I played CSM for years, and it was a Chaos Undivided Army - the Metal Kings my version of Black Legion.

As far as aesthetics; I am a simple painter I do not have the skill to paint as good as many of you on here, plus at almost 60yrs old now my eyesight is not what it used to be :sad.: . The way I painted my old army was black primer, then Tin Bitz, highlighted in Bronze then Trim in Gold. Except for my Plague Marines, they were a simple dark green, highlighted in lighter greens with red wash, then gold trim.

My old RT Marines were very, very simple Bronze and Silver. BUT I have always enjoyed the whole Look of Chaos more than SM, spikes, chains and skulls :smile.: but I am not sure IF I want to go down the "dark path" anymore. I have looked into the Blood Angels, and Space Wolves BUT every time then I used to buy "normal" marines in the past, LoL they would end up being turned to Chaos LoL

As far as Tactics - I am a very defensive player, I like taking advantage of the players who are in a rush to beat me and grabbing victory from them when they make a mistake. My dice rolls are (was) very strange, I miss a lot BUT, I make a lot of Armor Saves.

Hope that helps

Agreed, sounds like you're after some Death Guard to me! As an added bonus with the new Contrast paints (or just washes, if you're old school) they should be easier to paint up looking nice too so you should be able to get a decent table top quality force :tu:

If you really don't want to go Chaos, then might be worth waiting to see with regards to Blood Angels and Space Wolves - they should be getting new codices at some point (likely next year, and probably before Death Guard get a new book - but no way of knowing for sure). Let us know what you pick, and of course don't forget a WIP topic to show off your progress ;)

Definitely sounds like death guard. They are great at mid range and taking punishment.

Blood angels , and to an extent space wolves , demand a more aggressive “get into thunder hammer range” play style!

Thank you both for your input, now it all depends on the deal I am trying to make with fellow local player.

See I have a Andy Chambers signed copy of Rouge Trader, that I am hoping to trade for a copy of Dark Imperium with him so keep you fingers crossed for me.

Yeah I think if I can do this deal, I will go with Papa Nurgle's Boys and the SM with the set would be easy to convert.

The box sets are good for splitting, don't forget to check eBay as it's a common deal and not everyone has a local peer interested in a split so there may be some good offers there

Yeah, thanks. I have always been a long time eBay shopper. It is the best way to go especially for bits. :)

I just hope my wife has not throw away my Apple Barrel Paints yet. She has been using them with her crafts, so they should be still good.

Well, Well I just heard from one of the players that I would be playing with and here is what he is offering me.

From the picture that was sent to me - The Appear to be Dark Angels and/or Space Marines.

Two Bikes - Looks like Ravenwing

Five - Terminators

Sixteen - Space Marines, looks like a Tactical Squad and Extras.

BUT here is the cool part, he is offering them for FREE!

And BTW here is my Rouge Trader signed by Andy Chambers (Just to share). It was the oldest part of my former collection, and is the only thing I saved. :)

Welcome back to the hobby! I just got back into it after the early 2000s and I'm having a blast. I'm not an amazing painter haven't touched a paint brush in nearly 20 years but I still post my progress on stuff and everyone here is really nice and just want you to better yourself.  Don't be afraid to post your stuff I was embarrassed at first since I'm not nearly as good as most but I did and it's been helping me get better at it.

Thank you, I hoping to get the Army today. Been reading some of the 1000 Chapters' DIY "DA" Chapters for ideas for mine. I like to keep my paint jobs simple - Primer - Base Color - Wash - Highlight - Do the Trim (Eyes, Etc.).

I use Apple Barrel Paints for cost reasons, and they work well if you thin them out first.

Ya I was SW when I was doing the hobby in the early 2000's but after reading Xenos and the Eisenhorn novels I said if I ever come back it would be with an Inquisitor and the DW. Not sure how they play I've actually never played it back then I got like half my army painted and then life happened and I couldn't afford it anymore but then now I can so I'm actually going back to my aunts house after Thanksgiving and getting them out of the garage. I went to a couple shops up here and talked to people and they were all really nice said they would teach me whenever I was ready with an army, some even said it didn't need to be fully painted they were happy to help. Which was cool for a returning player to hear. But now I'm like super into the Inquisition and creating new characters too bad they don't have a full army yet.

For me I started with Rouge Trader, we did not have any minis for game and 1st and none of wanted to cut the book's counters out. So we made our own, LoL out of cereal boxes and wrote the unit's name on them LoL "Trooper Frank, etc."

My first actual box set was the old RT Marines, I painted them Bronze with a Testors model paint. But I really got into 40K in 2nd Ed and played CSM, bought one of those big Army Boxes Sets, and just kept on buying for year at one time I had over 1000.00 spent on my army.

Those where my Metal Kings, my version of the Black Legion, I would ally up with a buddy of mine and his huge Ork army and we would rule the board, fun times!

What ever your going to enjoy painting and building with to play, I love the Death Guard kits and they're awesome fun to paint.

I love space marines but don't enjoy painting them, Chaos is better for that for me, and Orks are the most fun overall to do all three with.

I'm planning on a Khorne Daemon and World Eaters forces in the new year

"Repentent Heart"

Is that because your dudes are sorrowful and looking for redemption? Or because they rip the hearts from their opponents' chests, hold them aloft, and say <in Ahnold voice> "you have been redeemed!"

Having fun. It's all cool and the best part of 40k is that its all about your dudes. You can pretty much do whatever you want with them. At the end of the day, time+effort+creativity+Rule of Cool win over pretty much everything.

Sounds like your budget is tight...which is ok, since in this hobby there are those who have a tight budget and those who have a really tight budget.

My personal recommendations for re-booting your army:

Army list building:

Hidden Content

This can be the trickiest to start with, but I would recommend "theoryhammering" out what you think you want to play with as much as you can in advance. This also will help inform what kits--if any--you buy, since each faction tends to have some "feeder" kits for the army. Since it looks like your going a Dark Angels-esque way, that would probably be the Company Veterans box and the Ravenwing box (might be the Black Knights box, DA players will have to weigh in) that are absolutely chock full of little bits and bobs you can throw on almost any model in your army to add some flair.

I would also recommend you do a bit list building ahead of time, too, since 8th edition shifts so much, you want to have some idea of what "works" and what doesn't. That is by no means to say you'll be That Guy trying to Win At All Costs, but I think everyone has more fun when they have a fair chance of winning and not getting blown off the table in Turn 1. I've seen it too many times where someone shows up all enthusiastic only to realize they didn't bring a single anti-tank (AT) weapon and are facing an entirely mechanized opponent, etc...

  • I would definitely check out the Dark Angels subforum here if you have not already, http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/forum/6-dark-angels/
  • I also like to peruse 1d4chan's Tactica articles, since they are surprisingly one of the few places that puts everything in one place. I also like that they are basically like "take unit x, don't bother with unit y..." ...something that GW will never ever do. That being said, bring your salt since in the same vein, they tend to have blinders on about what's "good". Also be ware that some of their links, language, and such can be a bit iffy for viewing on a work computer and such
  • Frontline Gaming is something else I will consult now and then to get the tournament world's view on a particular faction and what works/doesn't work. However, definitely enter at your own risk since they tend to have a WAAC approach to things and funnel almost all armies to mono-builds meant to win in very specific types of games.

By no means do you need to take any of the above as gospel, I just personally prefer to know what's out there and how power gamers do things, as much to defend against it even more than to copy. Knowledge is power and I think it can only do good to be aware of that sort of thing, even if you admirably categorically reject it.

Modelling:

As mentioned above, knowing what bits come in what kits can be extremely useful when it comes to mapping out how you want to model your army. There's also eBay, but YMMV. I would speciically mention eBay for any Dark Angel/Successor players since the old Dark Vengeance starter kit still has tons of models and bits floating around that can be quite attractive price-wise.

Painting:

sounds like you kinda sorta know what you're doing here. If it's been a long time since you've painted, maybe grab those $10 packs of Guardsmen or Cultists or easy-build Primaris just to get the kinks out. I painted Imperial Guard before moving to my beloved Blood Angel for that very reason....wanted to get the idiot marks out. Conscripts are expendable, after all

First off thanks for all the advice. Yes I am on a very tight budget, it is a paycheck to paycheck type of thing.

And I got my Army as of this morning 0650AM EST, and after reading the Codex, your links I have decided to play them as Dark Angels. This will be different for me, see as I posted I played CSM from 2nd Ed to about 4th Ed.

So here I go again.

Shouldn't be too different buddy Dark Angels are Chaos Marines anyway???

Well done on choosing its always the hardest bit of a marine army for me too!

If you need more support throw it up on here and i'm sure we all will help you where possible.

Have you decided how your going to paint them? I can recommend a silver base coat and then dark angels contrast over the top gets a good base colour down for sure :)

Well I am not sure yet, I am going to have to do a lot of cleaning. They have a lot of edge lines, and spur tips on them.

I was thinking of a black primer, then Dark Green then Highlight with a lighter green. BTW I use Apple Barrel Paints, GW's paints are out of my budget, AB paints work well IF you tin them down a bit, I used distilled water.

Fair enough, budget's are there for a reason.

I would say it is definitely worth considering the leadbelcher primer and a pot of dark angels contrast it works very well.

Also Army Painter do a green spray that would be perfect as a starter :)

And FYI, I been reading. I will be playing my DA Army as Angels of Vengeance: http://fortressofunf...2MoF_006_A.html

I really like Black/Red/Bone and since they my three favorite colors it was a easy choice. Also I think it will also work better for me, since my figures are a mix of Space Marines and Dark Angels.

I never paid much attention to "the other marines" when I was playing CSM ("just targets"), but I have fought AofV a long time ago while I was in the Norfolk, VA. The other player told me they used DA rules, it was back in 2nd Ed. Ruleset.

LoL I am getting OLD LoL, I been playing/following this game longer than some have bee alive LoL
