Some thoughts on modelling/playing Chaos Titans

So as should be abundantly clear, I'm a filthy heretic at heart, and the lack of truly Chaotic Titans so far is getting me down. Since my brain is trying to convince me to start making some, I figured I'd start a thread to collate ideas. Also I'm at that rudimentary planning stage where nothing is nailed down yet.

1) We're gonna be raiding the Chaos range quite extensively I reckon, primarily the Daemon Engine kits but potentially also Obliterators and Greater Possessed. Things I want to try include the top carapace of a 'Fiend as the shoulder for a Warlord (or indeed a Warlord's carapace), 'Fiend legs as Titan legs and... something involving a Venomcrawler, I just haven't worked out what what yet. Oh also a Daemon Prince/Soulgrinder torso as a Titan torso.

2) In terms of none-Chaos kits, the Nid range seems like a good place to start in general. I saw a wicked Warhound head spliced with a Carnifex head on FB (I think) the other day, and Nid guns will probably suit the aesthetic quite nicely.

3) The Rapier Battery weapons made by our very own Subtle Discord over at The Dark Works scale to Warlord shoulders quite nicely it turns out.

4) There's a 3d printed Proteus Pattern Warhound floating around that I'd probably get at least one of.

5) Slaaneshi Titans are a thing. I have no idea how to make the bodies for them, short of trying to find 40K scale Revenant/Phantom heads and working from there.

6) Rules-wise, I'd probably use the WD rules to bash together some ungodly hybrid of Murder Lords, Death Stalkers and stuff that looks cool from the build your own lists, at least as a starting point. Unlike my main models, which are all fully magnetised, these guys are gonna be modelled for rule of cool anyway.

-----------------------

The other thing to keep in mind is just how much of the visual language of any given Titan class can you mess around with before it stops reading as that Titan? Personally I think so long as the sizes are kept roughly correct, it comes down to heads and/or shoulders in much the same way as you can distort the basic shape of a Marine quite a bit but the shoulders and backpack help snap it back into focus. I'm intrigued to see if moving away from a bipedal frame is too much of a warp as well.

So yeah, that's where *that* particular thought experiment is at. I doubt I'll be doing much with it until next year, I want to get my normal guys finished first. That said, if anyone has any input whatsoever or is inspired by this late night ramble, please fire away!

I think it was the old Citadel Journal with Andy Chambers' Titan army, (or it might have been a White Dwarf article, I just remember the Journal having the conversion article for his Imperiator conversion) that might be of some use.

EDIT

Think the Journal just had the rules in. I cant remember the issue numbers of either magazine but Ill keep looking. Heres a pik of his 'Abominatus' class Titan.

anda 'Caligula' Titan that kept showing up.

Unfortunatly the chaos titans of old were Imperials with fancy doodads, so they just looked like edgy imperial stuff, there really isnt much to work with inspiration wise from the originals. Im sure you will manage though. :tu:

A few changes to the posture of a regular titan can make a big difference. This is my most chaotic Vulpa Reaver - the neck is from a Hellbrute waist, with some Hellbrute shoulder armour to cover up the gaps at the sides.

The spine/tail on the back is also from the Hellbrute kit - it fits nicely around the carapace weapon, giving the model a bit more of a scorpion feel (which seemed appropriate for a proto-Khornate war engine).

Hey so I've started on my Chaos Warhound.

Used Poxwalker spines to add some horned growths, and greenstuffed some skinned muscle flesh areas, also a skull to a shin pad which i've GS'd to look like its grown out of the metal.

Also started on the Black Legion force that this Warhound will be supporting. :)

@FajitaFan: what's that skull from, the Mechanicus scenery?

I feel that the work of individuals like DuskRaider should be taken into account here, because that lad makes some phenomenal Chaos Knights... and Knights are miniature Titans, after all.

Oh absolutely, the works of all our incredibly talented Chaos hobbyists will feed into this project in some way shape or form (assuming they don't get there first that is!)

The historical miniatures company (well, of a sort: they tend to specialize in 15mm paper panzers and the like) Heer46 recently previewed some Chaos Titan upgrade kits, which was an incredibly weird thing to see in my feed, but they might be up your alley.

I checked out their FB, very cool kits.

Now they are cool, and *incredibly* 90's! I love the chainblade flail thing on the Abominatus.

There’s plastic chain and a wrecking ball for a tail on the Ork Trukk if you have any Ork players near you. Also some Defilier parts can be useful if you cut off rivets or anything that denotes scale.

Good shout on the Ork bits, not a range I'd considered. And yeah, I imagine there's some Defiler plates that could add an almost Lucius-pattern vibe to the Titans, not to mention the faceplates are a potential addition.

Man the extra neck really changes the whole feel of the model doesn't it? I'll have to put a Helbrute kit further up my purchase list for this project. Sweet conversion as well!

A guy on the AT18 Facebook group called Jeremy McClung has posted up conversions for a Khorne maniple as well as a Nurgle one. If you go back in his post history you'll also find some slaanesh and tzeentch conversions, they're all pretty nice.

I'll have to look him up, cheers for the heads up!

I would imagine the various Undead kits could be fitting for Chaos Titans as well.

Yeah the new Bonereaper range has some stuff I want to investigate the applications of for sure.

Now that is looking good, and so simple to achieve as well!

--------------------

First off, I'm glad that I'm not the only one thinking along these lines. Secondly, had an idea: paint the chassis of a Titan as if it was bone. For extra gribblyness, sculpt it to look more bonelike. I'm thinking that approach works best on a Reaver, they've got that excellent exposed 'femur' to work with.

@MagicMan! Can I share those Tainted Elites on Vanguard Miniatures Instagram fan page when you're done with them? :smile.:

Yeah, of course. If you give me a few days I can take a picture of the batch I'm finishing up.

Includes Abbadon, a few bases of Marines/Beserkers and some Rhino's.

Still haven't finished the base, waiting to do it with a batch of others, but calling the Titan done for now.
