The key thing is that a cap of three detachments is not a rule of 40k. It's a guideline that GW suggests for tournaments specifically. The fact that most tournaments (including GW's own) enforce it has no effect on the overwhelming majority of games played outside that competitive setting.

Ultimately, nobody playing a pick-up game with you should expect you to adhere to a detachment limit unless you specifically agreed to beforehand, whether by verbal agreement or the rules of your club or whatever. If you didn't do that, then fill your boots and take the six Patrols and just gently remind anybody who questions it that the detachment cap is a tournament guideline and you are not playing in a tournament. If other people want to stick to three, then that's down to them.
