Word Bearers: The Grand Host of the Order of the Apocalypse

Since I mostly build and paint miniatures, moreso than play at this point, I figured it’d be alright if I started a painting blog for my Word Bearers. If I do one for my Nightlords once I get started on them, it’ll be in a separate post. I’m not really sure I want to put this in the WIP area, or in the Chaos area. After some debate, I’ve decided on the Heretical Astartes area, at least for the moment.

Brothers, come and delve into the realm of the Dark Gods, together, for the time of reckoning is upon our enemies!

If you want to skip past the story, just go past the overview section.

The Grand Host of the Order of the Apocalypse: An Overview

The Host was founded by the Dark Apostle Varun Aghash, a veteran of the Long War from the time of Heresy itself. Through the sacrifice of Kokalda II, where his Word Bearers, numbering over 1,200 in their ranks, saw to it that the entire world’s population of 12,000,000,000 were sacrificed to the Dark Gods to enable a vision of what he foresaw as the coming “Savior” of mankind. A series of feverish visions visited the Apostle, as well as the host’s psykers. In fits of visions and agony, each one was visited by Daemons of the Dark Gods, each’s eyes were opened to a different fate. Each one, saw a different path to the salvation of Mankind and its embracement of the Primordial Truth.

However, this fractured the Host itself into five, and soon declarations of heresy towards the others were levelled. Using scripts from the Book of Lorgar, each justified their stances, each one speaking of a figure who would rise from their plans, a champion forged and born of both the materium, and the Warp. Upon the world of Irkan VI, a desert planet, an abandoned and used Agriworld from centuries past, the War of the Five Prophets emerged. It would see the “false” visionaries and their hosts brought to ruin. Through blood, and conflict, on a world which had become their temporary safe haven, the true vision of the future was realized by the Dark Apostle Aghash.

For nine thousand years, the remnants of his Host, now dubbed “The Host of the Chosen Divination” would rampage across the frontiers of the Imperium, often striking at targets which made little tactical or strategic sense, raiding ancient ruins, or stealing individual people. Only when commanded by stronger, more powerful Chaos Hosts, whom they had made dark pacts with, did the Chosen Divination ever appear in force across more expected battlefields of the centuries and millennium between their formation after the Horus Heresy.

It would be only a few short centuries before the Thirteenth Black Crusade, which Varun considered to be the Crusade of the False Prophet of Horus, that the Chosen Divination’s journey would reach its conclusion. For generations, Aghash had killed specific people on his prophetic journey, as well as captured others, using them to create what he believed was the ultimate champion of the Dark Gods. Each layer of prophetic visions creating bloodlines of humans to lead to the final conclusion, a single entity born of desecration of the pure, but to create the Body of the Neverborn. Twins were born of the “Holy Mother”, a victim plucked from the Imperium whom was the last piece of this mangled puzzle. The part of the vision which lacked clarity, was the twin, but he knew upon seeing the child who would be named Iblis Marax, that he had found the Host of the Daemons. Through daemonic ritual and a syphoning of the lives of millions, he called forth the Daemonic Entity known as Seraphar, the Great Old One of Desacration, Violence, Europhoria, and Endless Sight and infused it into the Host’s body, creating the Chosen One which he had sought to make for so. Very. Long.

This entity’s body did not warp, it did not change, instead, growing in human form, it’s essence perfectly contained within a vessel which had been crafted in blood and bone for a hundred generations. It was the union which Lorgar had foreseen, the fusion of living human flesh, and the Neverborn. Its body was implanted with the sacred Geneseed, and it grew in power and stature. None in the Legion could approach it in strength, power, and psychic ability. From the time of its conception, it had become the ruler of the Chosen Divination. Its will was to be ever accepted. It was to them, as sacred as the Primarchs, and of the Dark Gods themselves. In a series of campaigns, the Chosen would burn worlds from the edge of the Maelstorm, to the Eye of Terror. Their numbers would only increase as whole worlds were driven mad, and the humans, having seen the truth, were marshalled to their banner. The Grand Host of the Chosen Divination, even began to catch the attention of other members of the Dark Council within the Word Bearers, as these heretics now took centre stage.

It would be Erebrus, who first declared them false prophets, after “Lord” Iblis Marax made the declaration that it was in fact, the truth successor to Lorgar, upon striking down the Word Bearers Daemon Prince Kolgok the Divine.

However, fate was ever turning. A Chaos Space Marine simply named Ixion Apollek, had lived his life in the shadow of the Greater Lord of all. The blood brother of the body which Serphar inhabited, he was given no notice, only that he was found worthy of taking on the trials of the Word Bearers. His status never rose, despite his fanatical resolution. It would be upon the burning of Noximus III, where Ixion would have his awakening. The quest had been to find the Maul of Malice, an Ancient Daemon Weapon of immense power, said to be forged of the shattered fragments of betrayal in the fires of a forbidden God’s Eye. It would be Ixion, who would find this weapon first, placing his hand upon it as his squad secured the area, prior to the arrival of Varun or any of the other more powerful servants of the Chosen One.

In that moment, only as his power armoured glove touched its hilt, Ixion was told a thousand dark truths, exposing the lies of the world around him as the hammer whispered to him the nature of the Dark Gods themselves, and what it was to be Chosen. The Chosen were not born, they were made. In all of his religious understand, brought on by the Apostles of the Grand Host, Apollek knew it was true. This weapon was not being taken as a means of seizing it for their own purposes. It was being taken because it was anathema to his master.

In the coming years, as he quietly slipped from his beliefs into new ones, he kept his questions to himself. His doubts grew ever wider, and with every doubt, every moment of skepticism, he used his fury to his advantage, training, questioning, and researching at every moment he could. It would be on the station of Baod, an abandoning Imperial Station near the Eye, where he would be sent as a guard for the Sorcerer Zemet the Faithful in his dealings, and planned betrayal of the Chaos Space Marines whom resided there. There, Apollek would forge a brief relationship with a Night Lord named Dracard, a lieutenant in the Winter’s Night Host.

This was his moment, revealing the betrayal that would befall the Night Lords. It would be Apollek who now waited for his opportunity to betray his masters. Zemet was slaughtered by the Night Lords, along with the Chosen sent to guard him. Distress signals blared through the Warp as the Night Lords beckoned aid, their own small fleet moving to guard the station as the Word Bearers Grand Host moved to assault. The station itself was of extreme importance to their next moves against their own legion.

The Battle of the Night’s Bastion would go on for nine days. Starting with fleet engagements, the light cruisers Storm of the Night, and Nostromos’s Honour were shredded beyond repair, and left dead in space never to be recovered. Ixion himself gave the Night Lords all the information he could on Chosen attack plans, as well as any information on commanders, and their known shortcomings. What should have been an immediate victory for a force which vastly overpowered the Night Lords, instead became a desperate battle.

It would only be once the capital ship Everchosen came into range, firing its boarding torpedoes and assault pods, that Ixion himself and a small series of talons from the Night Lords, fired back from the immense station. Upon boarding the ship, Ixion, after initial confrontations with Daemons and crewmen, blended in with the defenders as he moved towards the Vault of the Forbidden. There, he met, and slew the two brothers guarding the relics, before he found the Maul of Malice.

In the fighting onboard the Everchosen, almost the entirety of the Night Lords had been killed, though what little remained, and Apollek, fired back in another assault pod from the vessel, plunging back into the station. What they were met with was an ocean of corpses. Boarding crew, Word Bearers Chaos Space Marines, Daemons, and other nightmares had launched themselves in an onslaught on the defenders.

Standing over it all, walking over the body of the Night Lords Chaos Lord, Nemos the Dark Reaper, he saw his wounded lord surrounded by bodies. The swirling mass of Chaos surrounded him. Of the two companies of Night Lords which had been on the station, perhaps 50 remained, in increasingly diminished states of readiness. Hurling himself forward, Ixion landed before his Lord, mace in hand.

“You are a vile abomination, unfit for service in the grand vision of Lorgar. A daemon not fit to serve the Furies of the Warp.”

When the two met, made of the same flesh and bone, both armed with powers their bodies would have never been born with, the battle was lop sided. Marax would rip through reality itself, smiting his brother before slashing him with ease, and breaking one of his arms. Ribs would shatter next, before the Word Bearer managed to lash out with his weapon, it pierced through the warp, even as the Daemon of immense power tried to manipulate reality to hinder the blow. When the blow landed, ceremonite shattered and the body within was wracked. The very soul within, the Daemon, shrieked. As the broken body lay there, trying to regain its composure, Ixion would walk over it, his body laboring for breath. When his own eyes stared back at him, he cared not, as he smashed the head of the only master he ever knew as an authority for his many decades of life.

The Death of the “Chosen One” sent shockwaves through the warp around them. Reality quaked and the warp sent still. The death of the Everchosen sent panic through the ranks of the Grand Host. Withdrawals of remaining forces were made as the ancient Apostle Aghash desperately tried to understand why his life’s work had ended in an abrupt encounter on a footnote to the reformation he had seen.

Aghash himself, would meet his fate as the remaining Word Bearers came together. Ixion himself, carrying the very Maul which had been locked away, would kill the Dark Apostle in moments, committing the ultimate sacrilege within the Legion, upon the last one. Every other Apostle, for being “false Prophets” were sacrificed to the Dark Gods as the Chaos Space Marines themselves saw through the veil of lies they’d lived up until that point.

Through strength alone, and through being the slayer of the false, Ixion found himself as Lord of the Grand Host, before declaring them not Chosen or able to see Forethought. Instead, he claimed they were to be a Grand Host of the Word Bearers Legion, and they were the Order of the Apocalypse. Their quest to destroy the Imperium, their own brothers, and be ruled by an entity born to greatness, had come to an end.

They were the masters of their destiny, and they were Slaves to the Darkness.

Current Miniatures:

My Word Bearers have quite a lot of miniatures I’m working on. There is a full Company of the Apocalyptic.

So far, the Grand Host has (barring my immense amount of Daemons)

180 Cultists (many aren’t the best in their painting, so a lot may slowly be replaced over time, or worse painted miniatures will go into reserve)

100 Chaos Space Marines, arranged into squads of x10.

One squad with bolters, x2 Heavy Bolters.

One Squad with Bolters, x2 squads with Plasma.

Three Squads with Bolters, x2 Autocannons

One Squad with Melee Weapons, x2 Plasma

One squad with melee weapons, x2 Melta

One squad with melee weapons, x2 Flamers

Two remaining squads with unknown outfits, may be more Autocannon squads. (I bought x10 Shadowspear Autocannons to split between my Night Lords and Word Bearers)

X20 Havocs, x4 with Lascannons, x4 with Missile Launchers, x8 with Autocannons. (chaincannons are going to my Night Lords, at least that’s the plan)

X1 squad of x5 Terminators.

X1 Lord of Executions.

X1 Master of Possession

X1 Dark Apostle

X1 Chaos Lord

X1 Heldrake

X4 Forgefiends (2 plasma, 2 hades)

X1 Maulerfiend

X1 Venomcrawler

X1 Lord of Discord

X3 Rhinos

X3 Helbrutes

Planned Expansion:

X1 more squad of Terminators

X1 Dark Apostle, Master of Possession, and x2 Sorcerers

X2 more Rhinos

I’ll have the list of Daemons, and Greater Daemons, that I’ll be using as well.

====================================================

Plans:

Each unit I complete, I’m going to post here, with the name of the Aspiring Champion, a blurb about them, and pictures of the squad itself. I’m also going to update this with my “Works in Progress” and maybe ask a few questions about what people think I should be adding to the miniature or ect.

First Work in Progress:

Ixion Apollek:

Named for Ixion, the wicked king of Lapiths, hence why he’s treacherous (beyond just being a word bearer) and his last name comes from the word Apollyon, an alternative spelling of Abaddon. Ixion is a Lord I’ve been working on for years. Originally, he had grey knight legs (with a tabard) and a giant spear, as well as a head from WFB, I never finished painting the miniature however. Right now, my main concern is which hammer, mace or daemonic hammer I’m going to use to replace the Thunderhammer on the miniature. If anyone has suggestions, I’m be happy to hear them.

Right now, I'm thinking of using the Hammer from the Vangard set from AoS, it's just impossible to find that Bit anywhere, lol.

Off to a cracking start brother, look forward to seeing where you go. Gloria Aeterna. I might have a spare Varanguard hammer lying around (I mass bought a few off eBay a while back) for you, gods willing. Will have a look.

I've got a massive pile of Daemons for my pawns. x2 boxes of Realm of Chaos, x1 Khorne Starter box, x2 Bloodletter boxes, x3 Starting Nurgle boxes (traded away my Nurglings, for MOAR Plaguebearers. Not because Plaguebearers are good, but because I personally dislike Nurglings and the 'comedic' element of Nurgle), a few heralds of all stripes, and a Lord of Change, Great Unclean One, Keeper of Secrets, and x3 Bloodthirsters.

Interested to see how you go, I've just used that model as the base for my own Word Bearers warlord as you've seen, however I have seen a version of him using a mace head from the chaos Knights (fantasy) kit (old version) that looked quite cool, alternatively if you want a hammer you could look at the khornate age of sigmar stuff?

Good luck!

I may wait a few days and see what PA options are for Daemon Weapons for Word Bearers, before I finish him. In the meantime I'm building a new squad, painting another squad, and basing another squad, which I'll have pictures up tonight / tomorrow for.

Battle Doctrine:

I thought of doing this as a separate post, but I figured I'd point out some notes for utilization of Chaos Space Marine Squads. First, we know they are pretty awful, but even then, how do you get the most out of them?

Now, I still design for narrative purposes, so my champions of the squad don't always have the most sensible layouts. For Bolter squads that are there to lay down firesupport, they should contain either:

Firesupport:

x2 Heavy Bolters

or

x2 Autocannons.

If you've got the men to swap out with spare weapons, it'd make sense to make units for both. I tend to commit however, at least at first. x2 Heavy Bolters is better for hordes (in theory) or x2 Autocannons for dealing with Primaris and Light/Medium Vehicles. Autocannons, also, unlike Heavy Bolters, have almost a mutliplier to them. The more you have (especially in a world where you can shoot different targets per squad) the more of a force multiplier they are. They slice, they dice, and they are a threat to every model on the battlefield. In numbers, especially high numbers, the more you have, the more your enemy has to think about where he's going. And with 48 inch range, they can outrange their Primaris adversaries. Opening up on a squad of intercessors in the open with x4 Autocannons, even without someone nearby to help with rerolls, will wound x5 marines, and on average kill 2-3 of them, before they get into range with you.

The advantage a 10 man squad has, versus 5 havocs outfitted with Autocannons, is survivability. Havocs require a Rhino just to live a turn, and even if they can fire on the move, they've very much exposed to incoming fire.

Mobile Fire Teams:

x2 Plasma Guns.

They've got reasonable range, can be overcharged, and do good armour pen. Damage is okay. Risky weapon, but war brings risk with it. The alternative to these are really Melta Guns or Flamers, and realistically they are a bit too niche. They have their own uses of course. Mobile fire teams comprised of Bolters with Plasma Guns should also, typically have a transport if possible. They're expensive and often wasteful, but without them, you're probably not going to make it to the minimum range for effective fire of 24 anymore. Eldar are fast enough to choose when they want to engage and annihilate you, and Space Marines will gun you down at 30 inches or 36 inches without a care in the world. Rhino or bust, unfortunately.

Assault Teams:

Armed with close combat weapons, bolt pistols, courage, and a healthy level of stupidity, these squads are expensive, and lack real value, but screw it, nothing's better than getting in the face of the loyalists, Xenos, and terrors of the galaxy and carving their face with a Chainsword. Teams will be reliant on an aspiring champion to put real damage out, but they do have options for weapons that can soften their targets, or, make life easier for other teams.

x2 Melta Guns

x2 Flame Throwers.

Melta Guns will kill monsters and tanks, which the squad may not want to contend with. This is never bad. Flame Throwers on the other hand, provide reliability, and protection from enemy charges, reducing the effectiveness of you being charged. Also, helpful for dealing with things you might not be able to reliably charge that turn, in both cases! Also, Rhinos. Must have.

Nothing is in a vacuum:

These teams rely on other things. Characters to help with rerolls, and characters to be meat-shields for, for instance. Transports to make them effectively able to move up the field. Right now, personally, I think the only squads that might have any kind of ROI are the twin autocannon squads, in numbers, myself. But I'm building all the teams listed above.

I´m not sold on plasma guns these days, They seem to be everyone´s darling, but I´m tired of using them. You have to baby sit them to avoid their death by Ones or you have to avoid overheating, but then they are just a damage1 weapon ehich is dissapointing.

My personel new hotness is the melta gun. I give it to Rhino squads as well as bike squads and they offer some strong anti vehicle shooting. I like to play jacks of all trades and a 6 men biker squad with 2 meltas and combimelta is THE jack of all trades. I highly recommend these squads.

I hate the way Bikers look, and even if they had new models, it's very meh to me.

*PLASMA only gets hot if you overcharge it, and when you overcharge it, it's damage 2, instead of damage 1. :|

I'm not much for Melta weapons in general, that 1 ft range really relegates it to specialist squads for me.

I'd say Autocannons for fire support. Long range, decent str and D2.

Plasma guns & combi-plas are nice to have on a frontline unit.

For the assault squad, well...some meltas are never wrong... :P

The close quarter's squads aren't going to live anyway. lol

The meltas will be the last ones to die... ;)

Chaos Space Marine Squad:

Mobile Fire Team: “The Faithful” Completed

Bn7mN5o.jpg?1

(The Faithful)

First squad completed. I finalized their basing today. I just have to paint the right around the bases themselves.

Lead by Rashn the Adherent, Aspiring Champion of Chaos, the team of Chaos Space Marines are relative newcomers. Several had been recruited from their captured enemies, two most notably, being of the imperial Fists. However, these warriors have still seen The Long War first hand. Participating in raids since the opening of the great rift, they have born witness to the burning of Hive Cities, and warfare against enemies’ superior to them in material and strength.

xeHFBvf.jpg?1

(Rashn the Adherent)

Rashn, the only survivor of the prior iteration of the unit, was declared to have survived on his Faith alone. Thus, he claimed the title, the Adherent. The team he leads, too, have claimed the name “The Faithful”. From his experiences with the Primaris and other enemies of man, Rashn has sought out plasma weaponry as an equalizer, where ever he can trade for it, often willing to part with other valuable weaponry scavenged after battles, in order to keep his team fully prepared for the battles which he knows are to come.

WIP: Support Team: The Chant

mEJpLd2.jpg?1

(WIP: The Chant)

Second Squad to be worked on, possessed twin Heavy Bolters.

NrZk8Fe.jpg?1

Lead by Neburkar, the Elevated. Neburkar was promoted to the role of Aspiring Champion when his predecessor, Kazak the Redeemed, was killed in combat during an engagement with the Imperial Fists. With his passing, Neburkar was ‘elevated’, believing himself to be superior to all other Aspirants within the Order of the Apocalypse. He has been visibly noticed for his treachery and nativity, though it has yet to come to a head.

WIP: Support Team: The Choir of Damnation

Third squad, assembly phase, just finished basing them to the ground, though the Champion is mostly done. I’m going to be gluing on most of their backpacks, but painting the bolter arms separate from the body. Heads will be glued in as well, with the exception of full helmetless models, which will be painted on a stick.

ItuVlSA.jpg?1

(WIP: The Choir of the Damned)

The Choir of Damnation is amongst the oldest and most venerated squads operating within the Apocalypse, formed shortly after the Horus Heresy itself, these veterans of the Heresy rarely accept fresh blood within their ranks, only when they have problem that they ‘understand the chant of the warp’. Said to sing hymms while firing their bolt guns and autocannons, these Veterans of the Long War prefer to entrench themselves to oversee a battle, offering advice, direction, and most importantly of all, the Holy Fury of Chaos itself, as they unleash as much ordinance as they can.

l9juyY9.jpg?1

(Harek, Master of the Eversong)

Lead by Harek, Master of Eversong, they have seen themselves through, mostly intact, in battle after battle, each one of them claiming many foes in the name of the Dark Gods. Harek himself, was even said to have stood upon the surface of Calth itself. Younger recruits, are said to have overheard him saying the story more than once. It is said in his prayers, when uttered aloud, he speaks of the Ruinstorm, and yearns to return to the World which he considers the place of his birth, for Harek may have lived prior to Calth, but it was on Calth where he was born anew.

Just a small update. I finished assembly another squad (no pics yet), and I'm actually thinking of giving my Chaos Lord wings, I just haven't decided on whether it should be leathery wings or feathered wings yet. I'm going to modify the regular power back to have the wings epicly emerging from his backpack, as if he's fusing with the daemon that now lays within., with some glue and greenstuff and other bits.

What do you guys think? Fallen Daemon Angel, or full blown Daemon winged monster? Thanks!

A bit of an update:

XRV6XNU.jpg?1

I decided to go with the angelic wing look. Like a Fallen Angel, it just seems to fit Word Bearers a lot, where their cultists view them as these divine beings. I'm gonna reposition the wing again. The backpack itself isn't going to be glued on until after the wings are painted. I'm genuinely not sure what colour I'm going to paint the wings yet. I'm thinking either white, or black. The skin on the model is going to be a dark grey, rather than a flesh colour, to reflect just how inhuman he's become. Still working out what weapon I'm going to replace the Thunderhammer with, but it's still very likely to be a Hammer itself.

First Master of Executions:

Zurvan Siamak

45MjMHv.jpg?1

The first of his brothers to support the fall of the Chosen One. A Veteran of the Horus Heresy, it would be Zurvan who would become the right hand of their new Lord, Ixion Apollek. He would be the one to nail the still breathing body of Varun Aghash to their alter to the Dark Gods, as his former master spouted off his vile heresies before he was sacrificed. Zurvan, a veteran of the Horus Heresy itself, saw battles across Ultimar, though never stepped foot on Calth. He was originally meant to be assigned to the Furious Abyss before he and his company were reassigned for an assault on Kopor II, a world that would be destroyed by virus bombs before the end of the heresy itself. He would lose half of his head during the scouring, though his brain would remain intact. Rebuilt with steel and spite, Zurvan said that he had one eye that looks to the world that is, and another, his real eye, to look into the world for what could be.

Upon vindicating himself and his master with helping rally their host he would be given the title of First Master of Executioners of the Grand Order of the Apocalypse. It would be he who brought about judgement on behalf of their new master, on behalf of the Dark Gods. It would be he, whom passed judgement in the absence of their master, or who was deferred to for discipline. It would be he, the right hand made of hardy steel and cold and cold ruthlessness, who was now the master of fate for those who fell below the edge of his blade.

-

He's not actually glued, outside of the putty that I used to adjust his cropped head to fit the body. I'm trying to avoid assembly of the model before painting just so I can get inside his coat legs easily. I know it sounds a bit anal, but I really don't want him to have missing bits and ect.

Still, should be fun to paint.

Last preview before I start working on his right arm. Not glued, won't be as each piece is painted separetely, but I'm hoping to have most of him finalized for next week. I've got painting I want to do over the weekend, so hopefully that means I'll have my second squad completed. I'm also priming up another 30-40 marines over the weekend as well to get started on them.

What do you guys think? Do the wings work? I think they look pretty good, especially with the head change. It has the Angel of the Damned vibe for me. I think we're gonna go with the black wings, lol.

The wings are ace. Really fits the pose. Your painting seems good; I'd like to see some better lighting on single models.

Regarding your army composition it would be great to see a unit of 10 chosen with 5 special weapons (2 plasma, 3 melta?) all armed with chainswords.

I just feel with that many power armour marines you might as well.

He looks great - like he's on the verge of becoming a daemon prince.

Depending on the colour of the armour, black may be a bit too dark or monotone - maybe dark grey for the wings, or with some white or light grey edge highlighting on the feathers.  Whatever you end up doing them, I would do the "fur cape" on his left shoulder to match.

As well, instead of grey skin, have you considered doing something even more unnatural, like dark purple?

Additionally, what are the wings from?  I was thinking of converting a Master of Possession model into a hammer lord with wings, using old gargoyle wings, but going your route would look even better.
