Starting a custodes army

Recommended Posts

Also, I love FW models are there any tanks/dreads (Telemon looks awesome) that could be added?

I just ordered a Telemon with the extra gun today.

My FW list consists of the Telemon with two of the guns, a Caladius Grav Tank and the Contemptor Achillus.  They may not be super competitive or brilliant for tourneys...but I don't play competitive/tourneys so I don't care - they look cool and that's all that matters to me :-)

I think that’s kinda the whole point of the Custodes as an army, kinda like Deathwing before they lost the ability to be taken as troops. I love fluffy elite armies so this one appeals to me too.

How to take Wardens wasn’t something I had considered before the comments here. :)

Wardens v Allarus Debate:

Wardens have to sacrifice CP in an already starved list to get across the board.  Allarus have free DS.

Wardens have just Axes for shooting, which is crud.

Allarus have Slayer of Tyrants - which is their BIGGEST trick worth their cost.  They are your designated character hunters.  It might not sound like much, until you've locked down their HQ and they are about to get the business.

Allarus have the Concussive Grenades, which delete overwatch and make Tau cry.

Wardens have a 6+++ which never goes off when you need it.

The main appeal to Wardens over Allarus is cost per C/C attack. It's 183 points for 3, which gets you 4 axes strikes and 1 misercordia strike per model. Compared to 234 points (maybe CA will sweeten the deal) for 4 axe strikes. The extra wound doesn't help much imo. The concussion grenades don't work on battle suits, and the 2 cp to target characters imo isn't worth it most of the time. A Warden bomb, maybe with an Allarus Captain babysitter if you think you'll need rerolls. The Allarus are definitely useable, the Wardens are able to fill a similar role more effeciently, if that roll is slapping fools off the table anyways. Edited by MustertheCustards

The Slayer of Tyrants is an ability, that give's them a free 3" move towards the nearest character in both the consolidate and the pile in.  I'll take tying up an HQ or a sorcerer over killing chaff anyday.  Just my two cents.

In the current meta, there is too much chaff for Custodes to effectively kill anyway.  It's far better to get in, charge the HQ, and start targeting other extremely valuable character units.  Think TFCs with Captains or Chapter Masters.  I charge the cannons, destroy them, and tie up the HQ, wrap him, and destroy next turn.  8th has changed.  You need to be able to shut down buffers, not kill elite level mobs.

So, I really like both now with leaked points drops, Alarus with axe is now 71ppm, warden with axe is 57ppm, I've built mine with spears though so 55ppm, as you say they both do similar jobs, and I think my aquilon may well be making way for Allarus now at that cost, time will tell on that front. My experience has shown wardens can sometimes fly under the radar a little when terminators are present, I guarantee my aquilon will be targeted before my wardens and when they get in holy moly are they killy.

Something else I'm now considering is the vexilla imperius given the 30pt drop and the fact that magnifica is almost negated by the full re roll access a good number of armies now have.

It still helps a lot with that. 3s rerolling is over 90% 4s rerolling is 75%. You're best bet against most of those builds is to stay out of range or LOS. Find away to make them move, because their positions are usually fixed. Edited by MustertheCustards

I currently have about 1650 of points for my Custodes as follows;

Trajann

S-C with Axe

6 Custodian with Spears/ 3 with Sword & Shield

3 Wardens with Axes

3 Allarus with Axes

2 Vexilla, one with Shield and one with Axe

3 Jetikes.

I intend to buy another box of Jetbikes, to make a S-C on Jetbike and add two more guys to make a 5 man squad of Jetbikes, but what else would you recommend as next purchases?

I want to avoid Forge World if possible, I'm not completely adverse but I just think the prices are ridiculous. I can get most GW things at 25% off online so I try to keep my purchases there, unless there is something that is almost mandatory to run the army.

Don’t be discouraged about FW units, I’m actually converting some of the FW models. The FW termies with the Fists and flamers can be kitbashed out of plastic models if you have a decent bits box. I’m kitbashing the flying guys with the wings from the AoS Stormcast flying guys, I actually magnetized those wings for easy transport and now I can just glue magnets to the back of a few Custodes. The Bolter guys, the Saggitarisomthing can be made with just regular marine bolters if you want. No one is going to refuse to play you if you’ve made everything WYSIWYG without FW resin pieces.

I’m totally with you on FW prices in the US especially since the Telemon dread I ordered has a crappy surface and their customer service wants me to try fixing it with spray varnish in the winter time before priming to put lipstick on a pig.

I don’t mind the Venatari, I may get them, and the Sagittarum upgrades are ok too. Like the idea of kit bashing the Aquillons. I’m still prioritising GW plastics before I branch out to FW. Keep an eye on eBay for tanks too

There seems to be enough dakka in the army so I prefer meltas when the option presents itself. Btw if you’ve got extra melta big guns those can be hacked onto a Guardian spear.

I’ve converted one spear to have a melta so far that I think looks decent. Am I right in thinking the melta spears have to be taken in their own squad? I’d prefer if they were an option to drop a single one in each squad.

@NKirkham24 Yeah, you are correct. You can only take them as squads. No dropping a single melta into a Guard unit. Despite this, I am hopeful this will change in the future.

@Fajita Fan They aren't Elites. They were moved to the Troops section when the rules were finalised along with the Sag Guard. I think this was mainly due to feedback from the community. That's why I am hopeful we will see single specialist spears in squads in the future. Although our codex is relatively new so probably not for a while.

Where did they finalise the rules? I printed off the original beta rules pdf from FW, but I know from Battlescribe they've changed stuff, Sagittarum are troops now. I can't find any updated rules online, were they put into a Chapter Approved or somewhere else?

It;d make more sense for us to be able to upgrade a single Custodian in a squad, taking a specialise squad seems a bad idea to me. They'd just got shot off the board first as one of the few anti-tank threats we have. At least in squads you can split them and keep them safe for longer. Hopefully this does change in future.
