What to do when you're attracted to a kit but not its army?

So, here's the deal. For a long while, I've had my eye on an Atalan Jackals kit sitting up at my FLGS. I want it, I think it'd be a really cool modeling and painting project, but they're expensive, they aren't a Kill Team option so I don't have that excuse and they're not an army I actually want to play. No Start Collecting box, no easy box sets, and I would really just want to field a mining colony as an army if I did (file off the head ridges, call them miners defending themselves from whatever). If Jackals were a Kill Team option, I'd have them already and be fielding them, just because they're such a cool kit. I don't really have the funds to afford random kits, especially expensive ones... but I waaaaaaant them. What do I do?

Make a Necromunda gang, eventually we will get Ash Wastes rules so we can finally do Mad Max style gangs.

Or just buy the kit to paint, push your painting skills by trying new techniques without having to paint an entire army, or just paint it because its a nice ass set of minis.

After you said the Necromunda thing it got me thinking about wanting to get them and creating something lol.

Making a Biker Gang is high on my to do list, just finding the funds to get them though. :/

I really want to  make an Inquisitor on a bike, wouldn't be something I could actually play with. Unless I just counted him not on a bike but that's what I would really like to do eventually.

wallet: breaths a sigh of relief

Me: breaths a sigh of regret, then come to terms with I have 2 40K factions with a fair bit un-painted.... & no I wont mention the 2K Roman Legion army, still in its boxes as I dont know anyone who plays ancients so havent assembled half of them, that I brought because I like to learn about the period...:'(

Wait and see whether you're just hyped or you really desire that kit is the best option imho.

As for uses besides honing modelling/painting skills:

  • Conversion may be an option, e.g. I've seen atalan jackals converted to rough riders (and ridgerunners as sentinels or HWTs) for imperial guard astra militarum.
  • Other game systems: unfortunably the jackals are not available for kill team as far as I know.
  • Small detachment: Jackal Alphus, 3x Atalan Jackals would make a fast outrider detachment.

I always fancied the FW SM Recon squads, even though they are NOT templary at all : what I did was build them as "count as"...

Now I have a proper crusader recon squad.

It's not a random kit if you want it. Wanting it is how pretty much all purchases are made. Buy it because you love the models and want to paint them. If you feel that itch is scratched later, then either keep or sell them.

I tend to buy first, question later. That pile of shame isn’t going to grow by itself you know!

Aside from finances, it really depends on where you are at with your army and what you want from the hobby. I have enough stuff to play so don’t feel the need to prioritize filling out options for an army. (That soon to change with Sisters plastics...). As a result I tend to make most purchases based on models I want to paint or convert. When I didn’t have enough to field 2-3k I focused more filling out usable units.
