Old marines within blood angels armies

Hello cousins!

I have a bunch of old marines in my collection and i was wondering how would they work within a blood angels army.
Do you think they might work? How would you use them?

They are a bunch of sternguards, devastators and bolter tacticals and scouts.
What would you think of said army?

Sorry, i meant to publish this in the blood angels forum.

As part of a Blood Angels army, it'll do okay, but it needs to be built on a little. I would recommend transports for your Sternguard and Tacticals, and maybe build up on the troops with Intercessors and Hellblasters. Also consider some Assault choices such as Death Company (if facing Hordes) Sanguinary Guard (if facing Power Armour) or Vanguard Vets with Thunder Hammers (if facing anything with a toughness of 8 or better)

Personally I don't have many positive things to say about the Devestators and Bolter Scouts. Though I am sure there's some good advice on how to utilise them properly kicking around on the forum somewhere.

Check our Unit of the week series - some of those units have already been discussed a lot: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/tags/forums/Blood%2BAngels%2BUnit%2Bof%2Bthe%2BWeek%2Bseries/

Scouts are definitely useful as our cheapest Troop choice ensuring we get those CPs for a Battalion cheaply. They can Infiltrate. They can can reliably charge T1 if needed. Just don't leave them all on their own.

Devastators are still a good choice for a firebase. Keep a Captain or a Dreadnought and/or Lieutenant nearby for re-rolls. They also benefit greatly from the Standard of Sacrifice on a Comapny Ancient.

Tacticals are not that good now, but still with a MSU squad they can hold an objective and be a Lascanon or Missile Launcher platform. And they still benefit form our +1 to wound in case of a dire need.

Sternguard can also perform, but usually need a transport. Their bolters are good. Combi weapons are nice, but they can quickly raise their cost.

Thank you cousin. It seems they might be better to use with primaris units too then.

would you say that a blood angels shooty infantry army might work, cousin?

It does seem weird to be honest, that is why i ask.

It's really hard not to shoot in this edition ;)

All-melee armies will struggle - you either get first turn and wreck face (provided your charges go-off) or your will be shot of the board. I'd say that BA are a solid middle-to-close range army - get close (while shooting) and then charge T1/T2. All the while some long range support is nice to have. Both for variety and to increase the number of targets for the opponent.

We are pretty good at CC and everybody knows that. Our CC infantry is also one of our main strengths as even Scouts wound Knights, Demon Princes and Primarchs on 5+ with their bare fists. So it is good to present also some longer range threats so that our CC monsters don't get focused down too soon.

By all means - drop any combination of Sternguard, VanVets, DC, SG, scouts, Infiltrators, Incursors, Invictors right into enemy's face to support Captains with THs, Libby Dreads, Mephiston. Support this lot with Astorath, Sanguinor, Chaplains, Ancients, Sanguinary Priests.

And all the while whack away from longer range with Devastators, Dreadnoughts, Eliminators, Suppressors and tanks while Intercessors, Aggressors or even Tacticals hold the middle ground.

It does not need to be pure Primaris or pure Regular, cousin; our brother Primaris are tools to be utilised to the best of their abilities, just as the regular marines, and a good list has a healthy balance of both.

I have personally found that Primaris marines are very tanky owing the the extra wound and attack, and superior in the shooting phase. A regular marine is typically quicker because of cheap transports, and has a larger array of tools at his disposal, and better in assault.

My advice: With Blood Angels, an encirclement or blitzkrieg tactic can work wonders. Use regular marines to smash through the enemy's weak point, and the Primaris to follow through behind them.
