Are custodes fun?

Hello fellow B&C members. I´m starting a campagin with my friends and the goal is to reach 2000p painted armies in 40k. I really love 40k and have several other armies (mostly marines) but I have problem to get them painted. I just relased that a custodes army dont have so many models in it and I think the miniatures are great. So why not play custodes?! I both get a 40k army, I can play and it will be painted. It´s a win win for everyone :smile.:

But my questions are: is custodes a fun army to play, can it win and is it fun to meet?

I´m not looking for a army that chrush everything but a win here and there would be fun.

Please help a soon to be custodes (hopefully)

They are definitely fun to play with and against in a fairly relaxed game. The competitive lists are quite boring both to play with and against but a more casual list can be a lot of fun, especially if you take a variety of units.

Basically:

Spammy lists = not fun for anyone

Mixed lists = fun and cool moments but will lose a fair bit.

I have fun with mine, and I don't think any of my stuff is particularly meta.
It always feels uphill and heroic for your dudes to go in fighting against 4 to 1 odds, and coming out on top.

In the utmost competitive tables, they have 1-2 usable builds. In a more relaxed setting the codex shines.

In a nutshell, Custodes are simply a great starter army.  They aren't winning on major tabletop tournies.  They are very simple.  No micromanagement required.

Pros:

No Psychic Phase!

Hardly a shooting phase!

Hit things REALLY hard

No really complicated stratagems and rules (See: Deathwatch)

Hard to kill

Great Objective holders

Charge and Fight are the only phases you have to worry about

Cons:

Zero complexity - your opponent knows your plan before you show your list

Extremely weak against long range shooty armies (See: TAU)

No love or attention since release

Less than 5 different models.  (Guard, Warden, Terminator, Bike) Everything else is just different bits on the same model.  (SCs are just Guardians with a different head)

The only way to be even B class competitive is to pay out the butthole for FW models.

Same to same, no good effective transports other than Landraiders

Points per Model

As mentioned I think it's highly dependant on your gaming meta and how you intend to play them. I play in a very casual group and my custodes do extremely well as they are a good army that's direct and simple to play - you have your strengths and it's easy to play to them. I don't play them often though, as they have garnered a bit of a reputation and I like to play for fun... which includes my opponent having fun!

I can't comment on the tournament/more serious gaming. At the end of the day you need to like your army and their models so that is the most important place to start :tu:

In all seriousness, I just love the models.  Very detailed and beautiful models, even as Adeptus Plasticus.  They are fun to paint, and fun to assemble.

One thing I like about Custodes that I haven't found in the other races/factions, I am still alive by turn 3.  Custodes are, in the words of the very first Custodian...

In a casual meta I'd argue they're as degenerate as Death Guard. Notoriously hard to kill in little skirmishes, and downright ridiculous in Kill Team.

In any competitive meta they'll get shot off the board before they even get within 9" to charge, and even then fail the charge half the time. I'll admit I have won a couple of games against ITC level armies by a hair's breadth, but overall in this Iron Hands or general SM meta they're quite bad. And as mentioned above, only seriously competitive after spending lots on FW stuff which is not at all worth the money given the appalling quality of the resin.

I still play them every other week against my friends' competitive armies because occasionally smashing things to bits with a Warden deathball is entertaining, but for any competitive game I just play IG or Orks.

You have desided the whole thing for me. I will start them! Seems like a lot of fun and as several have said, a painted army of there miniatures will looks great on the table. My meta is above average I guess so I will propably have some challenge to win some games but that don´t make me fear the challenge.
