Chapter Champion

As you all probably know,Faith and Fury has given all chapter’s the ability to create a Chapter Champion.

This is something, as Ultramarines, we’ve had access to since our Supplement dropped.

I remember at the time there was a great discussion around the use of the Champion and I just wonder, for those who do use him, how you’d found him?

I’ve used him a few times and my opponent absolutely hates him.

For me, I used the classic combo suggest in these hallowed pages, Imperiums Sword and Burning Blade.

In one outing he took at a squad of possessed, an exalted Champion and a full squad of 10 Raptors.

In his most recent outing he accounted for an enemy Farseer, squad of Rangers and finished off a Wave Serpent before going down in the ensuing explosion.

For 55 points, I feel the unit is an absolute bargain and I rarely leave him out.

I’d like to have a discussion about how you’ve used him, what WLT and Relics you’ve used, and the tally of honours your respective champions have claimed for you.

For those that don’t run him, I’d like to know your thoughts and why you prefer the alternatives you take instead.

I use him like you do plus I give him the Warlord trait so other UM units can 6" heroically intervene.

That trait only allows for a normal Heroic Intervention (units within 6" of the character can HI as if they were characters). If one were to use the Born Heroes Successor Tactic then they could HI 6".

I don't use him (yet), because he's not painted. Instead of him I use models that are painted .

He does sounds fun to use.

He really is.

I'm exactly the same, I only use painted models. Helps me keep on top of any backlog.

Are you using the model from the old version of Calgar's honour guard? I use him as mine, or are you converting one?

If I remember rightly the Burning Blade is +3S AP-5 2D whereas the Soldier’s Blade, the Ultramarines specific sword, is +1S AP-4 2D. I guess that’s the relic one you’re referring to.

Unless you’ve already got the Burning Blade in your army I wouldn’t bother with the Soldier’s Blade as it is inferior in 2 out of 3 areas.

There's:

  • Burning Blade (C:SM): +3/-5-2
  • Soldier's Blade (UM): +1/-4/2
  • Blade of Triumph (F&F: Chapter Champion): +2/-4/3

Blade of Triumph is pretty tasty, to be honest. S6 and 3D is pretty great for blowing through characters (eg, a Marine Captain needs two failed saves to kill, compared to even the Burning Blade needing three failed saves to kill)

Considering he'll have 6A off the bat (5 base plus Shock Assault), and against characters he's rerolling hits and wounds, that's likely five saves vs anything T3-5, and still probably four against T6. Against even a Daemon Prince he's damn scary: slap on Might of Heroes and/or Imperium's Sword and he'll cut down pretty much anything short of a Knight or Primarch.

I wasn’t aware of the newest addition with Faith and Fury. That’s a much more difficult choice. I feel the extra AP is pretty redundant, -4 or -5 should bypass any armour anyway, so the trade-off is less strength but more damage.

Suppose the choice rests entirely on what you’re coming up against.

I love the Chapter Champion. The Burning Blade and Imperium's Sword is a great combination. Do it. Don't look back.

Need more I guess... he needs a transport ideally, so whack him in a Rhino with some Company Veterans and away you go. Cheap attack force.

Can someone explain the F&F weapon? It looks like a superior Burning Blade at D3 and I've not heard of it. How does it work.

The last game I ran him in, he was the lone occupant of a Land Raider, which was primarily there as a gunboat with Chronus driving.

I had that and a Repulsor drive up to midfield, some Bolt Aggressors and the Champion disembarked from the two of them and he then just ran amok as my opponent had to prioritise the other units.

+2s - 4ap 3d weapon. Replaces master crafted power swords only. In order to unlock it you must have warlord space marine. Edited by jonjacob

I fancy trying this guy out, any tips on who he should ride with and how to make him survivable?

I've used a Chapter Champion inside a Rhino and accompanied by 5 Company Veterans with Storm Shields and Storm bolters. He brings the close combat muscle whilst the squad jumps out and pumps 20 shots into something whilst tanking hits.

Good catch. I’m going to stick with Burnjng Blade.

Sorry I'm confused here... why won't we have a Warlord Space Marine?

I like this collection in a drop pod. Way more secure and your almost guaranteed the entire package arrives where you want when you need it.

I think it had to do with the type of weapon it replaced. I'm not positive on that though.

A Chapter Champion has a Master-crafted power Sword though. *shrugs*

Color me a silly fool. I’ll stick to choosing which is best dependent upon the faction I’m against. Sometimes with Tigurius reliably casting Null Zone the flat AP5 2 damage is better - especially versus certain enemy characters.

The blade of triumph could hit - ap5 with assault doc and strategem quite easily, but the cost would be subjective matter.

Buring blade = master crafted power sword

Triumphant blade = master crafted power sword & must have chapter champion keyword.

I am sold on this relic and the warlord trait for reroll charge distance for unit within 6 of champion. Planning on using one for my victrix specialist detachment.

Arguably he is 'better' with the difference being EC in hq. If he is a warlord you get 6 inch heroic intervention. +4 invulnerable. +1attack and strength. Has skillful parry and reroll all hit and wounds against. Character. Edited by jonjacob
