Legio Oberon and Legio Xsaetis

Hi and welcome to my Legio Oberon plog.

As I've not found any colour plates of them until now, Ive gone with what I hope will work as a scheme: a tiger-like orange with black stripes in a Razzle Dazzle camo scheme (don't want it *toooo* much like a tiger after all).

Here's a test:

Thanks.

I know the lighting isn't great, sorry about that - hopefully I'll be able to get a few better shots with daylight over the weekend, and I hope I'll be able to get his brother "done" too.

I'm not super happy about my masking tape though, it seems to be peeling back a bit while I'm airbrushing, which means the lines aren't quite as crisp as I was hoping.

Thanks for the compliments guys :smile.:
Yeah, I'll be having to tidy up with the brush at least with these, though I'd like to find the right technique for masking it correctly straight away XD It might be simply to do with not using the right kind of masking tape (basically been using some stuff I bought from DIY shops or general crafts stores)
Anyway, I've done the second one with another kind of masking tape. It seems to have worked better in some spots, but less well in others - where it stuck it gave crisper lines... but it really didn't stick as well.
Still, I'm happy with the result, and I now have certainty that they'll work well together when having no attempt at similar markings.

Now though, I need your help with the rest of the colour scheme.

I had originally thinking of doing the trim in the same black as the stripes, but I'm not sure that's going to work that well. Would you recommend:

  1. Sticking with the black
  2. Going for a metallic trim (whether silvery, gold, copper, or even iron - considering I'll be using a kind of coppery brass for the pistons)
  3. Blending the trims in with the orange/cream and black stripes to further disguise the outlines of the panels?

After that, I had been thinking of doing counter-shaded weapons for more camo, with a light grey underside and a dark grey top, but I'm now worried that's going to clash with the rest of the scheme. Should I probably go with a more classic 40k silvery weapon aspect?

Grab a couple of spare carapace panels to practice with and do them at the same time.  I would try bright silver (maybe the new GK Silver base paint that has a blue value in it?) as the trim color because gold or copper or brass will have a yellow/orange value to it that won't pop against the orange of the plate.  My only complaint with the cool Fureans schemes I see people painting is using gold for the trim, a dark iron would look better as the gold gets lost against yellow panels.  That depends on your taste but I kinda like the contrasting trim.

This the stuff you want for masking:

Tamiya is the real brand people use but this brand works too and it comes in a nice pack of sizes:

Cool colour scheme!

I think there is a very old picture from the time of first edition with a titan from Legio Oberon, I'll have a look.

For the trim, personal taste speaking, I'm hesitating between black and a dark metallic colour.

For the weapons, I'd go for a old/dark metal aspect, and continue with the idea of tiger stripes on the armour panels.

Thanks Fajita, I'll give them a try (unfortunately those links don't ship to where I live, but I'll hunt round for other Tamiya sellers)

@Mendi - thanks for the proposal, but I think so many of the legio schemes have changed, I'm not sure the first edition one would still be considered "canon"

Thanks Idaho, looking forward to fielding them alongside your Praesagius ;)

And since I don't currently have a wraithbone spray, I actually sprayed grey seer, then airbrushed ushabti bone (which was a pain since I had to do so many layers). I still don't have wraithbone spray, but at least I now have a pot, so my reaver will be airbrushed wraithbone, yes

So, I'm hearing two people saying a cool-toned metallic trim, and one person saying black. And for the weapons an "old" metal aspect. Ok, that's already helping reduce the field of possibilities, thanks people :) I actually already have a pot of GK steel, but I think that would be a bit cheesy. I'll have a play around with some spare panels as you suggested :)

Thanks, and welcome to the B&C :D

Tbh, when I see how great some people's flame and marble effects on their titans are, I don't feel like this is such a mad idea (yet! I've not got to the highlighting yet XD)

What are you playing/painting?

Hi there, long time no post in this thread! I'm going to be turning this into a mixed Oberon and my custom Legio thread if that's ok :)

Here's the beginning of my fluff for Forge World Ardasht and Legio Xsaetis:

Led by Techpriests largely following the ancient Hermatek sect of the Cult Mechanicum, this Forge World long ago converted its research and production capacities to the development of alchemical compounds, a quest they believed would bring them closer to the omnissiah. Rediscovered during the Great Crusade by the Mechanicum, they gladly accepted the offer to return to the Martian fold in return for the service of a powerful Titan Legio, and they would thereafter maintain close ties with the Fabricator General of Mars.

Astartes legions like the Death Guard and Iron Warriors would soon petition Ardasht for ever more destructive chemicals, and rumours still circulate of the Apothecaries of the Emperor's Children learning secrets from the more radical Genetors: but the greater number of the Forge World's priesthood would form a much tighter bond with the Thousand Sons and the White Scars, whose Legionaries were deeply versed in philosophy. While the two legions' forms of mysticism were not directly comparable to the Hermatek sect's, their study of esoteric arts often led members of the Ardashtene Mechanicum into long and fruitful debates with them.

When a chapter of the Word Bearers came to Ardasht professing to serve the true gods, they were immediately shunned - were it not for a newly elevated techmarine of that legion, the Techpriests of Ardasht may even have remained loyal to the Emperor of all mankind. Alas, this techmarine, learned in the ways of the Mechanicum, was able to exploit the core beliefs of the Hermatek sect, and turn them on the path towards self growth and enlightenment: a path at the end of which waited the Dark God Tzeentch.

Here's a few pictures of my stuff in AT.

First up the shot of my Legio Oberon Venator as it currently stands:

And my Legio Xsaetis test:

However, I'm not a super fan of the burgundy, it think I'll try more for a crimson or carmine as in this mockup:

In fairness that was part of my inspiration for doing Legio Oberon - I'd originally wanted to do a sabre tooth tiger themed DIY Legio, and while researching names I looked up the Latin word for "to prowl"... And it gave me "Obero". From there, starting the canon Legio Oberon was a very small step (though they didn't have their official artwork at the time). So that they are reminiscent of tigers is a compliment ^^

However, Oberon _are_ canonically orange, might you be confusing them with Legio Fureans?

I'm definitely going to keep the purple-ish burgundy, it goes well with the green and yellow and will look even better with gold trim
