Hi all! I'm a looong time lurker. To keep things short, I'm back into the hobby after a 10-year hiatus. I was collecting Warhammer Orcs, but I was always looking at WH 40k with interest. So much so, that when I started my Translation career, after much talk and praying to the True Pantheon (and sending three chapters to the editor in charge) I got hired to translate both Blood Reaver and Void Stalker in Spanish. I also sent Aaron D-B the Talos drawing you see in my avatar (and which got featured on his blog). So yeah, I am a fan, heh. The bad thing was that I hated how badly the standard minis looked in comparison to the artwork in Codexes and stuff. Until this year. So, after waiting weeks and weeks trying to see if I could resist the temptation of returning to the hobby, I ended up getting the Chaos half of Shadowspear.

Anyway, onto the minis. Actually, most of the pictures that I will share the next few days are a bit outdated (been working on this for months already, so there are lots of WIPS).

EDIT: Yesterday was quite late when I posted these (and had to re-attach links thrice due to my n00bieness...) and I didn't mention why is it that minis are primed partially. Well, that is because of me slacking for months and waiting until the very last day of Berlin summer to prime these. But then I wasn't entirely happy with some conversions and decided to keep working on them. I know this is sloppy blush.png .

Here is my Master of Executions conversion:

gallery_186987_15996_61483.jpeg

It is based on one of Shadowspear's Oblits. It was too cool a faceplate to not use! Cutting it and making it fit with the back of an old kit helmet was a pain in the butt-armor. I had to use quite a lot of greenstuff, but took the occasion to add some cool cabling as well.

gallery_186987_15996_44095.jpg

I added some cool features, like a rare take on the Legion symbol (made with a piece of a back pack and an Undead shield) and some customized faulds (those are part of an undead horse armor!). I also went for an expert swordman take for this model. A bit of a tribute to Xarl.

gallery_186987_15996_109614.jpg

However, I wanted to go a one step ahead (no pun intended) and added a pair of clawed feet from the new Havocs kit. I love them! You will see that they will feature heavily in my conversions.

gallery_186987_15996_27521.jpg

So, let's move into another mini. Some sort of Honor Guard for my Chaos Lord:

gallery_186987_15996_6416.jpeg

Just some detail of the GS work on the leg. Mark V isn't enough represented in the new kit!

gallery_186987_15996_111376.jpg

Here you can see a WIP of the halberd and the converted axe arm from the Master of Executions. I added a custom Legion symbol. I quite like how the Venomcrawler's tongue looks in this skull. The vambrace is also converted. Loooots of Chaos iconography filling was done in my minis.

gallery_186987_15996_17286.jpg

Halberd finished! I am happy with the bone part of the haft. Let's pretend that it's what remains of the previous owner of his helmet (which I customized extensively - I have actually added some Mark V spikes on the forehead, but no pics yet).

gallery_186987_15996_253882.jpg

Here you can see the breastplate with more detail. I went for a modified Mark IV look. The umprimed plastic comes from the Blood Warriors box. Instead of using the whole piece, I cut the relevant details separately. The helmet fangs come from one of the weapons of the Shadowspear Oblits.

gallery_186987_15996_47589.jpg[/URL]

And finally (for tonight) an early, outdated version of his backpack. I felt that Oxidious Malex' was a bit lackluster and tiny (specially for such a big model - he's Primaris-sized!), so I added some more bulk.

Ave Dominus Nox!

Hey!

Digging the conversions. Looking forward to see them painted!

Oh, I am fearing when that day comes:

- Having worked so much on these conversions, I really want to make them look good an unique!
- It's been 10+ years since the last time I painted. I plan on running some tests, tho.
- I am very nitpicky with the tone I want to achieve.

I want my NL dark, but at the same time, I also want to go for another take, as for me going with gold trimming and a very bright red is not very sneaky at all. Mezgike was a great inspiration, so I will use a greenish tint (it reminds me of the Void Stalker cover), and silver trimming because I find that that it fits the night theme more. As for lightning, I am torn between a greenish tint to enhance the above feel or go full ballsy and go with red, like in Doom (not shown on the pic, but I actually tried it and looks interesting). Example below:

gallery_186987_15996_91157.jpeg

I actually added a second lighting bolt using red, and it looks quite good! I need to decide if I will use it on the lord, on his honor guards or if I will use it at all. That would allow me to skip using red for the wings and other details and go for a more suitable color, like some grey.

Here is the finished backpack for the Chain Halberd guy:

gallery_186987_15996_46837.jpg

Sorry for my dirty fingers (that sounds bad): the priming of some minis didn't go well and some patches covered some details of a couple minis. I've been trying removing the primer the whole week using some hand sanitizer (it has ethanol, but only on a 60%). If someone based in Germany or Berlin can give me some hints on what they use on plastic minis, I would greatly appreciate it.

gallery_186987_15996_7144.jpg

Here is another NL, based on the Shadowspear Chaos Champion. I added a skull for his rebreather, wings made from the left over pieces of a Blood Warrior chestplate and some rib bones on his leg.

gallery_186987_15996_65826.jpg

I actually worked on his rebreather a bit more and linked the piece to the mini with GS. I also added eyebrows because I acctidentally filled them out while I cut the upper part of the mask away wallbash.gif.

These look awesome! Please keep posting updates!

Thank you for your kind words! Oh, there are maaany more comming. I spent the whole morning downsizing the pictures. Will add them soon to the galery smile.png. Here is an appetizer of things to come:

Oooooh, this I am liking! Those are some awesome conversions, I'm particularly liking that Chaos Lord with the twin swords.

I'd agree that red lightning would look really cool, too! Green lightning would be neat (I know the covers to which you refer) but you'd have to limit the amount of red on the rest of the models to avoid it potentially looking overly festive ("We have come for you...r mince pies!").

Those are some rather lovely conversions alright! I love the customised armour on the first two guys!

If I have one piece of criticism, it's that you are maybe cramming too many ideas into each character. For instance, fighting with one sword that's actually longer than yourself would already be a tall order, even for an Astartes, but two swords like that?

It feels like you could make the characters even more evocative by maybe trying to do slightly less with each of them, if that makes any sense?

Anyway, fantastic work so far! :)

Thank you! Yes, taking into account how "risky" I find painting lightning bolts, I will just put one or two there and there.

Excellent conversions so far, they look great!

Thanks man! You guys are encouraging ^^.

Oh, KrautScientist! You've been always been an inspiration. I am humbled.

I see what you mean with the excessive detail, thank you for your constructive criticism. To be honest, my plan is just to stick to around 15 models and call it quits. I feel kind of bad spending money on plastic crack and, besides, I don't have much space. That is the reason of dedicating so much time and effort in each model. I've always pictured them as a bit vampiresque/undead, and was trying to make them look more like that. I am also following the "Yeah, nah, we'd rather not be Chaos Worshippers" theme, so I had to file LOTS of details from the minis (in the end I slacked a bit, tho - let's pretend they stole that equipment from other warbands).

Regarding the Master of Executions, it might be the perspective, but for me the swords don't look that oversized (obviously, I am biased teehee.gif). The image I had of him was chopping heads with a scissor technique. But I am always open for suggestions! I also toyed with the idea of replacing one of the swords with an axe (similar to the headless rider from Sleepy Hollow).

Speaking of not going overboard with conversions in every character...

gallery_186987_15996_200982.jpeg

gallery_186987_15996_178719.jpeg

Recap of bits used (from the top of my head):

- Head: fanged Chaos Marine helmet from the old kit: I filed the fangs in the middle and left the last two at the end of each side. Then pasted a Grave Guard nose in front, his helmet wings on top and added some more details with GS. I cannot remember where I took the two small horns mirroring the Legion symbol from. Added more detail with GS, because the old heads are quite lacking in comparison with the new ones.

- Chain Halberd: Ork axe with one of the old CSM chainsword. I cut the tip, added a small blade, and used GS to merge both pieces. Random spikes from the Venomcrawler.

- Left shoulder pad: filed the eye detail, added three Venomcrawler spikes and created a bony pattern using an Undead horse rib cage.

- Right shoulder pad: wing from the Knight of Shrouds, loooots of skulls from various Tomb Kings shields, lower jaw from the Venomcrawler and lots of GS.

- Backpack: I wanted to feature a Nostraman Lion in some form (I always imagined his alias would be "The Nostraman Lion"), so I took one WFB imperial shield and took the lion head away. Since it was very goofy looking, I "fixed" it with GS. I added some cabling from the Shadowspear box. Added two more ejectors from a loyalist backpack, IIRC and a backbone from and Undead Skeleton rib cage.

Those are the most important bits, I already talked about the legs, chesplate and cape in the previous post. You can see that I extended the collar in some pics using another Blood Warrior chest plate detail (I tested this in another mini and liked it so much, that I had to use it here). It gives that vampiresque look that I wanted.

So! A bit more work:

First, I wanted to experiment a bit with this guy, specially with his powerclaw/fist.

- The high collar idea for my lord was first introduced with this guy.
- The blades of the power claw come from an Ork nob's. I wanted to go for an almost feline feel for them.
- Face is from the new Chaos Lord.
- Belly plate comes from a Grave Guard chest plate (I had to file the Chaos star first)

gallery_186987_15996_157661.jpg

gallery_186987_15996_76818.jpg

gallery_186987_15996_185486.jpg

Then here we have some more regular marines:

gallery_186987_15996_52838.jpeg

The twisted rib cage are actually the "hair branches" from a WHF driad (I had to file the Chaos arrows pointing to each side)

Here is another regular dude:

gallery_186987_15996_96787.jpeg

- Blood Warrior torso + cablings from the Venom Crawler kit. Also added some un-purity seals ^^.

Here is a previous version of another regular marine:

gallery_186987_15996_25012.jpeg

Since I didn't like how the humerus bones looked there, I removed those and added some rib bones from another kit. I liked the idea of two different rib cages tangled in a perverse sense of aesthetic. Still, I need to link these new additions to the main frame of the figure. Will also have to work around the arms (since this was a test, the arms aren't glued yet).

gallery_186987_15996_3961.jpg

And lastly, we have an attempt to incorporate one of the Knight of Shrouds robed arms into my marines:

gallery_186987_15996_88634.jpg

I am hesitant to build him a hood, since I have never donde that with GS, but it would definitely help to round up the conversion work.

Ave Dominus Nox!

Oh, don't get me wrong: The armour detail is brilliant, and I would definitely advise you to keep it (and judging by your latest conversions, you are doing just that). If anything, it's the somewhat overwrought weapons setups that can threaten to overburden a model. Case in point, the latest couple of models are just as sinister, but their equipment is also slightly more restrained. But anyway, I'm just spitballing here -- your Night Lords are definitely turning into something very awesome! :)

The conversion work is fantastic, and very characterful. What concerns me, is the black undercoat you're using. It looks very thick in a lot of places, and you may lose some of the finer details. I'm glad you appear to be addressing that. When I strip plastic minis, I use isopropyl alcohol.

Hey!

KrautScientist: Now I see what you mean! The only other case where this might happen is in one of the Chosen (not pictured yet): he has a melta AND a chainsword, because I thought that would be "f***ing diabolical" (The Boys, anyone?). Since I don't play and am not familiar at all with the legal loadouts, I am just going "rule of cool" here. I can always change it, but was getting tired of just having some boltguns and the anecdotical plasma pistol. Anyway, you will be able to judge when I post pictures of him. Glad that you like the conversions so far!

OakRiver: And you are absolutely right! I've tried ethanol (actually, a 60%-ethanol hand sanitizer) on some of them, but the results were not great, so I have just ordered one bottle of isopropyl alcohol. Thanks for the tip and your kind words!

In other news, I've been testing different recipes for the blue. Hopefully I will be able to come up with an easy recipe (if such a thing exists while painting Night Lords biggrin.png). On top of pondering wether to go with red lightning bolts instead of blue, now I am toying with the idea of going with a black marble effect for the trimming. I fear this could get messy, but there is only one way to find out...

I've had a lot of success with isopropyl alcohol, from RTB01 minis up to newer figures.

Chosen with Melta and Chainsword is legal. Their rules allow them to swap out their bolter for any special weapon, and they MAY TAKE in addition to their Bolter/Whatever it's swapped for, any Melee Weapon.

And as OakRiver said, isopropyl alcohol for the win for stripping models. Just..... don't leave resin models in it for too long.

Regarding the blue, I've had success with Night Lords Blue (seems obvious), an all-over wash of Nuln Oil, then a layer of Night Lords Blue back over it, and a highlight of Lothern Blue (the lightning on mine is Lothern Blue as the main forks, with Baharroth Blue as the inner areas and White Scar as the 'hottest' points):

[Awesome pic]

Oh, good! You see? I am a total noob with loadouts and whatnot. Thanks a lot for your help! No resin models here, I prefer the versatility of plastics. And that is a very nice blue! I got this one, along with some other potential schemes:

gallery_186987_15996_33356.jpg

Basecoat of Retributor Armor + 4 thin coats of Tallasar Blue (Contrast). Plus two options for lightning bolts:

1. Red (done with Khorne Red)
2. Yellow/green (done with Dorn Yellow)

I still need to decide what to do: so far, I have not been able to replicate this blue in a cohesive way (and that speaks ill for my pencil skills). The good thing is that it gives a decent result and is quite simple to do. I was also thinking in replicating Mezgike's scheme but, I mean... I am not that skilled, and don't think that I can pull that off. Regarding armor trimmings, I still need to run some tests and combine them with the rest of the scheme (when I decide which one).

Anyway, let's have a look at some more conversions, a place where I feel far more comfortable at:

I am quite happy with this guy and the details on both pauldrons:

gallery_186987_15996_49376.jpg

That's the left one. I just love the segmented armor look, it's very vampiresque. This was achieved by separating the armor plate sections of both side weapons of the Venomcrawler. Some GS work is needed in the link area. The upper part consists on many bones cut in half and glued over two Undead vambraces from Bloodbowl. I still need to work on this area a bit more.

gallery_186987_15996_22588.jpg

Here is the right pauldron. I wanted to represent the Nostraman Legion symbol devouring a human skull, as a not-so-subtle metaphor of fear swallowing you.

And here we have the melta Chosen I was talking about earlier (I will call him Gederas Silenceborn from now on, if you, Gederas, allow me)

gallery_186987_15996_195045.jpg

Some explaining is required: basically, being not familiar at all with the new Mortarch catalog, I saw this bit and fell in love with this piece... without doing a proper research until I had already ordered two units of them. I tried contacting the site twice, but they simply didn't answer. So I came up with the following solutions:

1. Contact some 3D scanning services here in Berlin in order to ask for a budget for downsizing this to the right size (waiting for their replies -wish me luck)
2. Use them as scenery (think of the Stormbringer cover art)
3. Use them as ballistic shields
4. Keep them as a reminder of my sloppyness

It's a damn shame, as the face is totally badass and would rock in an Astartes body. Anyway, here is some more pictures:

gallery_186987_15996_27275.jpeg

Left arm. I wanted to use the Knight of Shrouds hourglass no matter what ^^.

gallery_186987_15996_96855.jpg

That's the right shoulder pad. Many bits are used here:

1. Winged skull from the Undead Bloodbowl kit
2. Front chestplate chain from the UB champion kit
3. Hand from the UB champion kit drilled so that hook (from one of the former CSM kit guns) could be used
4. Clenched fist from the UB champion kit representing an armor embellishment that holds the chain in place.

And that's all for today!

Ave Dominus Nox!

That lightning recipe is hella nice! Also, whilst I feel your pain on the oversized faceplate, I did get a giggle out of the picture- gave me Nendoroid vibes. biggrin.png Maybe save the faceplate for a Defiler or Helbrute?

Also, the conversions so far are brilliant. I love the use of the hourglass!

Hi there!

In anticipation for Santa's gifts (let's say is gonna be a blue Christmas rolleyesclean.gif), here is a small update, because 1) I am a bit impatient and 2) I am also very happy with how some elements came out:

gallery_186987_15996_44380.jpg

Please note that so far I've only really worked on the face and the blue sections of the armor (in the pipes as well, but more contrast is needed in those). I am very happy with how the veins turned out! I have always pictured them like this guy:

327801a66dd70cf0978ea91ab6a8ea65.jpg

(Bar the disjointable maw, that is) Even in the NL trilogy there are references of "black veins" cobwebbing their features. Well, these are not black, but you get the idea. Of course, I just went for the "bigger" veins, because I feel that the model would look too busy otherwise. Also, painting that white dot in the eye as a reflection effect was hard. I'm so glad I don't have to paint pupils at all. Here are a couple more shots:

gallery_186987_15996_48742.jpg

gallery_186987_15996_17003.jpg

I need to work on my paint technique. So far, I have not been able to replicate that blue, but with some more colors incoming, that might be easier. Besides, it is not quite the shade I am aiming for, but it is getting there indeed.

@OakRiver and @Gederas: the isopropyl alcohol worked like a charm! I am so happy! Thank you so much for the suggestion!

@EvilEye: First, thank you for your kind words! Secondly, two companies replied:

1. The first one basically asked for 100 EUR only for the scan. The printing was maybe 5 EUR.
2. The second one asked for 500 EUR.

At this point, I will just keep them and scan/print them myself in like... five years, maybe ^^? That is, if I don't find any good alternatives by then. It's funny that you mentioned the Helbrute, because a colleague at work that is also into 40k had the same suggestion. I replied that I'd rather keep this as a small project, becase the reasons already stated above, but he looked at me as if he already knew that I am becoming quite the plastic crack addict. I hate when people is so right about me ^^. In fact... I ordered a few more bits, because I cannot get "Do a Raptor conversion" out of my head. But first, I will work on the paint recipe and take care of these existing models.

And that's it for tonight!

Ave Dominus Nox!

Fantastic idea for the NL skin -- that seems like such an obvious inspiration, which makes it all the more brilliant! When I look at the vampire from Blade now, I see a Night Lord. Great call!

Hey!

First of all, thank you guys for all your kind words! They do mean a lot to me and help me pushing this project forward! After seeing your feedback I felt stoked! So much so, that even though I just wiped out the entire original reply to this thread when I was almost done with it, I am all like "well, no worries, let's repeat the whole thing". That was after facepalming two or three times, tho.

Secondly, update time:

I had a wonderful and blue Christmas indeed. My wife Santa brought me many blue paints, a daylight lamp and a wet palette, so I started running some tests right away and finally got the blue that I wanted (I was able to even achieve some blends!). Sadly, no pictures, since I screwed it up with the trim and painted over the blue accidentally. Now I know that I will start with the trim when I paint these bad boys...

On another note, my bits order arrived yesterday and I started working on them:

Man, the Corpsegrinder Cult heads are awesome. Since I saw them, I knew that I would get some for my NL. I wonder how come I haven't seen any conversions using them yet. BTW, the necks are too small. I had to release my inner Night Lord and start chopping some necks from the old CSM kit. This worked like a charm.

gallery_186987_15996_8895.jpg

This one got a bit blurry, but no worries, here is how this looks on one of the Chosen/Honor Guard:

gallery_186987_15996_52498.jpg

gallery_186987_15996_73616.jpg

I love how this guy turned out. I still haven't decided how to pose the head, tho. Any preference?

gallery_186987_15996_872.jpg

gallery_186987_15996_6021.jpg

For this one, I cut the silly horns (same with the previous head) and this resulted in a nice pair of elegant crests that could be interpreted as wings. I may work a bit more on those in order to make this more obvious. Apart from that, I covered the weird grill on one of his eyes with the bionic eye of a spare servo skull. I still have to do some minor GS work on them.

And that's all!

Ave Dominus Nox!

Oh man, those Corpsegrinder heads just work ridiculously well for Night Lords! Even moreso with the tweaks you have made to them! Brilliant stuff!

Regarding your posing question, definitely the second option. I do have to admit I am not really feeling the spiked ork shoulder pad on his right shoulder, though.

The last guy is completely brilliant, though!
