Hey guy!

I have a mission tomorrow, against a tyranid friend I haven't fought in a while. A fan of Genestealers and Psykers, who has to rush through an urban landscape with me playing defense.

We are playing 1501 points of new and improved PA Tyranids, on Urban Conquest rules. The scenario is straight from the book. He needs to nominate 3 units, that cannot enter ruins (must move through open ground), and if he manages to get his units past my line, he wins.

So, here is my list. I'm intrigued on how this will play out.

1501 points
Barallion Detachment
Supreme Command Detachment
9 CPs

HQs
Interrogator-Chaplain with Power Fist and Bolt Pistol, as well as the Eye of the Unseen (Brilliant Strategist)
Lieutenant with Chainsword and Bolt Pistol

Librarian with Force Sword
Librarian with Force Sword
Librarian with Force Stave
Librarian in Terminator Armor with Force Stave

TROOPS
10-man Tactical Squad with Combi Plasma, Plasma Gun and Plasma Cannon

10-man Tactical Squad with Combi Plasma, Plasma Gun and Plasma Cannon

10-man Tactical Squad with Combi Plasma, Plasma Gun and Plasma Cannon

ELITES
Company Ancient with Chainsword

5-man Deathwing Terminator Squad with Assault Cannon and one Chain Fist

HEAVY SUPPORT
10-Man Devastator Squad, with 1 Heavy Bolter and 3 Missile Launchers

My idea is to plug up the two roads that there will be running down the board for the scenario with two tactical squads on one, and the last on the other.

My plan will be to place the Librarius Conclave i habe brought next to my Warlord, and reinforce with the devastators the already stronger side. So as to bait the tyranids to face my characters, covered by a "smaller" screen of models. Once his genestealers (and they will be genestealers) are locked in, I'll use Empyric Channeling and the -2 to ld boost, to crush them with powers.

Meanwhile my stronger side will weather the enemy with strong numbers, while my DW and final librarian make a break for his backline.

I'll see how that goes.

Better check on how Shadow in the Warp works before relying too heavily on psychic powers.

Maybe I'll make him burn through his CPs by sheer overwhelming amount of smites.

Ok, first off, yes, I was absolutely demolished.

Second, I am definetly blaming the narrative rules of the scenario (we played the one where one side holds a ruin in the middle of the board with 2 squads, and the other rushes in before reserves roll in). We had to add the "Acceptable Casualties" rule midway on round 1, to make the battle last longer, after I got hit by 8 smites and a bunch of shots.

Third, and final point, it was heroic as all hell!! It was an amazing fight, once the reserves got in. I never did manage to move beyond my reserve's deployment area, but I did manage to break a huge genestealer and hive tyrant charge, before the swarm became impossible to move off of the objective.

Looks like we might have a rematch tomorrow. On a normal scenario, this time. To see how the armies behave.

Yesterday, when I played them, they didn't do much. But that was because they spent the first round in reserve, then another round rolling snake eyes for each power, then a third round dead by cause of genestealer claws to the neck.

But, all in all, I am hopeful they will work well next time.

The named characters have a real advantage over stock characters with buffs bonuses and individual special rules.

Ezekiel for example has a built in 2+ & 4++ with 2 denies
Asmodai gives a bonus attack

If your facing a smite heavy army you need to look for the cheapest way points wise to absorb them, Primaris Rievers are currently 8 points per wound and razorbacks with twin HB might be an option then use the 5+ save strategem to bounce some off.

You need to roadblock genestealer to give you at least a couple of turns to shoot them

Ok so, I have my rematch today.

1450 points, to try a Maelstorm of War scenario under the new rules for Scheme of War from CA2019.

We agreed to share lists before the match, but obviously had to make them up without knowing what each of us is bringing, and cannot change them now. They are locked in.

In any case, my opponent is bringing in:

HQs

Flying Hive Tyrant with voracious ammunition

Neurothrope with psychic scream

Swarmlord with accelerated digestion

30 Hormogaunts

30 Hormogaunts

30 Hormogaunts

25 Hormogaunts

3 Venomthropes

3 Biovores

Exocrine

So, a BIG swarm of small creatures, that through special traits of the fleet will be hitting me at AP-2 with their close combat weapons... so, yeah. Ouch.

I, on the other hand, am bringing my WYSIWYG Wings of Dawn Demi Company in progress, composed of:

Not-Azrael, as warlord

Not-Ezekiel, with Aversion, Mind Wipe and Trephination

Lieutenant with Heavenfall Blade and bolt pistol

Terminator Librarian with Mind Worm and Righteous Repugnance

10 Tacticals with combi plasma, plasma gun, plasma cannon

10 Tacticals with combi plasma, plasma gun, plasma cannon

10 Tacticals with combi plasma, plasma gun, plasma cannon

5 Terminators with chainfist and assault cannon

Company Ancient

Company Champion

Company Apothecary

10 Devastators with a Heavy Bolter and 3 Missile Launchers

.... my bikes and darkshroud are "in the shop", so I cannot use them. Rather, i am going full on infantry to try and break down his swarm before it can overrun me.

So, we fought.

It was interesting. I managed to hold off the tyranids to punch through for 4 turns. In the process I killed off the biovores, the exocrin, the venomthropes, the hive tyrant, and half the termagants.

In return I lost half the devastators, almost an entire tactical squad, a couple from another, the terminators, and the company champion.

All in all, by killcount, I feel I did great! But in tactical objectives I got diddly squat. 3 points to my opponent's 16.

I got HORRIBLE draws, and my opponent got all the cards for babysitting objectives, which he could do easily eithout even braking his advance, since he had 4 long columns of troops marching down the board.

Still, a good fight.

The best answer to a smite heavy list might be allies. A really good one as an example is Ezekiel as your librarian and then run red scorpions alongside magister sevrin Loth is their named librarian and between the two you don't break 300p and have 5 casts and 5 denies which is a lot of spell output for just 2 infantry sized models. Sevrins rules are in index imperial armor and he can be proxied by any librarian with a force axe in power armor.

The idea is interesting but I feel your trying to out infantry a hordes list and its just not going to happen. A smarter idea would be to barrel into him and smash the line or pound him from above with air cover. Flyrants went out of fashion and Tyranids are notorious for a lack of answers to air power so the dark talon will reap an ugly toll.

I'm thinking 10 death knights, Zeke and loth, a dark talon, min squads of troops as needed, and then fill with heavy weapons and ways to bolster the knights in melee. Focus down his big creatures to harm synpase and prey on the weakness within that. His big monsters beyond tyrants and broodlords aren't characters so feel free to lay in if you've got a good shot. 10 knights will hold against hell or high water. Walk them up and simply existing will be a problem.

From there it's simply a matter of then cracking the big creatures and murdering the weaklings in mop up operations.

Some Razorbacks with assault cannons and heavy bolters are fairly cheap to deploy and he will have a rough time finding firing lines through them to other units if you set them up right

One thing to note is if your getting smited, if you run a banner on a 4+ you get to shoot in the opponents psychic phase.

Yes I run Hellblaster blobs with the banner Azreal and an apothecary very affective they are too anyways back on topic the terminators don't really have enough bang for thier points I've been running the character speeders the really noticeable thing is how effective the heavy bolters are these days and at 10 points pretty decently priced also Dreads are a super cheap these days I've auto cannon arms for them., also Whirlwinds are pretty cheap with 2d6 at s6 or 2d3 at s7 d2

The new inceptors with assault Bolters are pretty tasty and I did some mods to my attack bikes to magnet on the heavy bolters

Thank you for both your suggestions.

I am a bit limited by the selection of models I have, but I could take this ideas and direct my army towards them.

Hey Berzul,

With 3x tactical squads (3 X 10), why not opt for a brigade over battalion? You already paid the cost?

Do you forget that Aggressors can fire twice if they stand still or that overwatch fire doesn't count if they can't see your charging unit?

Don't worry Berzul!!! :)

I love the Urban Conquest missions, especially sniper alley!
