So I've been reading this article on Adeptus Custodes for about 3 hours now on and off. I just realized that the "Emperor's Companions" number 300. And it mirrors the story of Leonidas and his 300 guard. At least I finally realized it. :/

Alexander the Great also had an elite force called the companions (Hetairoi) from which he drew his bodyguards. There's a little bit of everything in 40k!
