Beastmen - Daemons of the Ruinstorm

Hi everyone,

I have a lore question related to modelling Daemons of the Ruinstorm. I really like the possibility offered by the army list and so I would prefer to avoid to be too close to one particular god (well, bloodletters miniatures are cool but ...). So I'm looking for alternative ideas that would be suitably daemonic.
Obviously, there are the forgeworld daemon brutes which are really cool and perfectly fit the "not-god aligned" theme I'm looking for. But it's only brutes ... I read rumors of other miniatures following the brutes but I did not find any sources.

So the other idea I am considering is to use AoS beastman. They are chaosy, but not god-aligned and their is enough diversity in the range for instance using start collecting boxes plus bullgors as brutes. Given the scale of war and violence unleashed by Horus rebellion, it would make sense that daemons would represent violence.

On one hand, in Necromunda there is a beastman bounty hunter and

some recent beastman soldiers fighting on Terra during the siege, described as mutants from some hive
. So that would mean that beastman are mutants rather than daemons. Maybe more suited to actually fighting within the militia list. Chaos also have tzangors which I thought were daemons but actually, after checking in they don't have the daemon keyword in AoS.

On the other hand, the beastman miniatures are more brutal and mutated than the previous examples.

So, is there any scholar capable of explaining the nature of beastmen to me? Would you consider them to fit the daemons of the ruinstorm style (from the lore or from a modelling perspective) ?

Yes, Beastmen are definetly mutants that wpuld normally be more appropriate for a militia list under normal circumstances. However, with an appropriate paintscheme and even converting if you're inclined, you could say that they're daemons that have taken the form of Beastmen, representing humaities fear of mutation and 'degeneration'. Furthermore, the Ruinstorm list includes units of possessed Astartes and militia, which could also work.

Well we have the new Furies now for Warcry too, which are Undivided daemons that would fit the aesthetic well. Hopefully the range will be expanding soon, as Chaos is getting a fair bit of love right now both in 40k and AoS.

Yeah beastmen are a thing in 40k so they might not be the best minor daemon choice, that said its not exactly going to be confusing for your opponent as long as you arent mixing lists in some way and the beastman range has a whole load of other useful things in it so id say go for it :)

Give them larger horns and paint them flayed and bloody... Boom Daemons. Leave them as is and paint in flesh tones... Beastmen. Minor tweaks can really change the aesthetics of a mini, all my Daemonettes are flayed and they look fine in my Slaanesh army and make passable female Bloodletters when stood next to my fiancee's Khorne army. Sometimes a non standard colour scheme is all you need to change the whole feel of a mini. Maybe try Beastmen bodys with Ghoul heads??

Yeah, making them look like daemons in the form of beastmen (or, like, warp-fuelled beastmen) would be a good option. Horns and hooves is always a classic and justifiable look for daemons but you could easily distinguish them mutants by painting them as creatures made of warp-stuff rather than flesh and bone.

So 'unnatural' colours, glowing eyes/mouths/weapons, the ground cracking where they walk, instead of the more conventional colours of fur and skin you get with GW's studio beastmen.

Actually, I just remembered I started converting a Bloodletter into a Daemonette, all you have to do is just work your imagination a bit and see where you end up. Spend a few hours going down the google rabbithole of weird, morbid and macabre pictures and something will spark off a few ideas.

Horns, hooves and general goat-like aesthetic are well connected to the devil and daemons, so it could definitely work. I echo the suggestions of pushing the daemonic nature through the colour scheme. Coal black with glowing fiery eyes, perhaps the hair too, would certainly reoncile them with the unholy.

Thanks for all the answers. Using paint to represent chaos-fuelled creature from the warp seems a good idea. I'm not sure I could pull it off, but anyway starting with a single test model sounds like mandatory best pratice. :D

The problem with tainted flesh militia is that it would involve heavy conversions to make them use modern weapons rather than AoS equipement. Furthermore, while standard gors could be human mutants, it would not be possible to use the bigger beast such as bullgors or ghorgon.
