Back in about 4th ed before 30k was a twinking in FWs eye there was a bit of a craze around here where loads of people were doing preHeresy armies full of great conversions and interesting minis. The period around 2006–2010 or so was insanely creative and collaborative between all sorts of wonderful hobbyists. As Noserenda says, a lot of the images are now sadly lost. If you do want to have a dig through the rubble of a more civilised and elegant period there are still lots online here and there. My Praetors of Calth project log is still up on Warseer, and the more recent stuff is here on the B&C. Yeah, Photobucket kinda ruined a lot. I had Siege of Terra / Scouring Era Death Guard made from the Armour Marks when FW first released them mated to their Plague Marine kits and using period correct weaponry. This was what? Maybe 4 years or so before they released Heresy, but you knew it was coming with the release of the old armour. All of those pictures lost... He was such a wellspring of painting inspiration. Pacific81 Posted April 30, 2020 Share Posted April 30, 2020 Hey Sarabando Yes that was a really interesting period for modelling and the background - a lot of it wasn't well defined other than the TCG (and associated art books) and very little in the way of miniatures. So instead you had to make do with trying to get hold of individual minis that were readily available (trading when you could) and subbing in your own conversion work. A favourite I remember being some of the Khorne Berserker helms, which became great crusade era helms with bunny-ears removed, and using a small drill combined with modelling railway rivets to make mk5 'Heresy' armour - you can imagine how long it took to make even a single marine! Some, like Apologist, had the modelling skills to take it a lot further with true-scale and the like! But it was a really great, inventive community. Iacton as well with some seriously impressive Imperial Fists - and again you wouldn't meet a nicer bloke. I still have my blog up from that era although a lot of it is 10 years old or so http://eatersofworlds.blogspot.com/ If you have a look down in the bottom right there are some links to a few of the other guys that were modelling at that time and their blogs - having a look a few of those are still up! Like I say it was a really interesting period from a modelling perspective and gave the feeling of doing things that were fresh. Laurie Goulding at the time ran the Great Crusade forum (which later became the First Expedition before it shut down), which was probably the centre for all things pre-heresy. and the forum group ran some really cool Pre-Heresy events. Laurie already had some BL contact at the time and even managed to get Graham McNeil to write some of the background for an event (which, as far as I know, was the only semi-serious mention of one of the lost primarchs!) and it was all OK because so little of the background had been described at that point. Another chap on the forum and I (Dave - Wolf Lord Mjolnir) were even told that our battle of marine-on-marine, World Eaters vs. Space Wolves, may have got written into the background as canon by BL - although I don't think that ever happened, or if it was it was a foot note! You also had the guys running the Tempus Fugitives - they had some great campaigns at Warhammer World with their own full rule sets and the like, there was a lot of passion and effort put into it. Looking back it's definitely something I feel fondly about - I'm sure a lot of the other guys that were involved felt likewise. I think the official FW minis coming along, and Horus Heresy books, knocked the steam out of it a little (at least for me) in that you know longer had that big grey area for creativity - although it did make the whole Heresy-era a lot more accessible to hobbyists with less time on their hands, which I guess was probably a good thing in the long run! When it came along i made a new army (EC who fled istavaan and arrived in 41st Millenium running into the tau first) and actually played some games which is rare for me as im mostly just a painter and modeller. He sent me that with a load of bare heads once, I still have it wrapped up, never used it. Had it since 2007 Actually I just had an idea, how about a lockdown non serious conversion comp? Convert a Heresy marine out of a Mk 7 just to show the newer heresy crowd how we used to do things back in the day...
