Alpha Legion and Cult Units

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I’m new to Chaos. Am slowly building up an Alpha Legion warband. My question is, does the Daemonkin stuff from shadowspear fit into Alpha from a fluff perspective? Part of me says yes, Alpha infiltrate everything, prt of me says no but I don’t know why. Any help would be greatly appreciated

It absolutely fits - the Alpha Legion isn't uniform in its approach. Within my Warband, I have companies of various degrees of corruptions.

This might have been discussed before (if so, can you point me in the right direction?) But what is an alpha legion army looking like these days? The trait seems good for a durable ranged firebase, but also for protecting troops as they move up for assault.

I'm maybe looking at cult heavy alphas, noise marines and Rubrics with -1 to hit seem tasty.

I really liked the legion trait with havocs and noise marines (and it would still be beneficial to troops marching up a field if they have no transport). Both of which I used quite a bit but it has been some time since I played a game of 8th. Usually their long range and being in cover just made them hard to dislodge and kill. Raining down Havoc lascannon fire or thrumming Noise Marine symphonies across the board was great unless something closed the distance fast like jump pack units or flyers.

I also always wanted to try AL Rubrics, armed with warpflamers, and placed over 9" away from an enemy unit using that infiltration stratagem (if we still have it). Then plop down a jump pack sorcerer to warptime them up into firing range of a target and roast them like marshmellows.

You thinking competitively?

That's not how the Infiltration works anymore - you just get a 9" pre-game move.

@Chaz: Shucks but that’s good to know. I’ll probably spend the points for a rhino if I get back into 40k

Speaking of which, since I haven’t played since September(?), do I just need the recent chapter approved and the updated CSM codex to get back into the game?

You would need CA and the new Vigilus Ablaze, actually! I don't use CA though, I just use Battlescribe (Not a fan of paid patches). I'd also check the FAQs - our original codex was full of errors, and the new one is a V1.1.

I thought rubrics and plague marines couldn't be used by C:CSM armies cause the DG and TS have their own books?

The line you're thinking of just prevents you from using the DEATH GUARD or THOUSAND SONS legion keyword with units from the CSM codex.

You're free to give swap the <LEGION> keyword for whatever you like:

If a Heretic Astartes datasheet does not specify which Legion it is from, it will have the <LEGION> keyword. When you include such a unit in your army, you must nominate which Legion that unit is from. You then simply replace the <LEGION> keyword in every instance on that unit’s datasheet with the name of your chosen Legion.

Good to know and thanks for that! I’ve got battlescribe but now I know what I’ll need when the time comes. And I completely forgot about FAQs. Good amount of book keeping to stay up to date on.

Yes, use what you want. The Alpha Legion will use every available tool to win. Everything is a weapon in the long war, and only victory counts.

It would be pretty cool if the coil rule came over from 30k. There'd have to be some parameters but it would be pretty neat.

Again tough, don't let that stop you from using the minis or rules. You can always use the minis if you like them and if you want to use the unit itself there are ways to add them to an army.

Presumably no Sekhmet terminators or Deathshroud then though?

No, they're in a different codex and have the THOUSAND SONS/DEATH GUARD and not the <LEGION> keywords.

As noted, you can always bring them in a separate detachment, or the same detachment if you sacrifice your legion trait.
