What's going on with GW and their dice?

For AoS you might, but I don't play 8th Ed enough to know what a comparison to the different spells and destiny dice might be.

The AoS range seem to be even more skewed between awesome and awful with no middle ground than 40k ones.

The general Astartes ones they did at the start of 8th were really hard to read.

That article above has a good point about confusion between which symbol is 1 and which is 6. Those Space Wolf dice did let me down something rotten.

To be positive if they did the Kill Team dice in 20s they would sell truck loads. The Guard or even AdMech ones youd buy even as a general imperium player

+1 to the Custodes dice. I love those. They look beautiful, roll great, if maybe not successful, and add more flair to the games with my golden boys. I also got those marble chessex dice to go along with them - a beauty, I tell you. :)

strangley enough ... I think I've found a reason for the sisters dice that does involve rolling them as dice..

MIRACLE DICE - you only ever roll 1 or 2 at a time (you can use more but thats another story).. so how hard it is to read each face doesnt matter that much as you will be picking them up and moving them anyway :p

sorry they missed off the worst Eldar dice ever done.... the only dice where I see the owner go ':cuss this' and go and get other dice because no one could read them...

The Howling Banshee dice are just as bad.

The Swooping Hawk and Fire Dragon dice are nice though.

I'll be getting them and using them for exactly this purpose; so they very clearly stand out from the other dice. Normal rolls will be made with normal dice.

Youve got to stop considering them as dice and start seeing them as collectibles. Cause thats what they are. You *can* use them as dice, but does anyone seriously think squishy dice are supposed to be anything other than a fun gimmick?

I agree here. I treat them as collectibles. I ended up buying three sets of the Blood Angels dice and after rolling them once I prefer to use the really small d6 dice, the dice cube sized dice that gw sells. Pips are clear and smaller dice are easier to grab a batch and roll without damaging the table or minis.

I'll most likely sell off two of the Blood Angel dice sets after I move and get settled in. They just sit in their case right now lol! The one set I'm super happy I bought for collecting reasons was the Deathwatch dice set. They are quite nice. :biggrin.:

Speaking of B&C dice. I saw that the dice type poll finished. Is there another thread that is taking orders?

My biggest problem with GW dice is that they don’t roll. The corners of them have become too pointy, and as such they bounce once or twice before standing. Back when the corners were rounded, you could actually roll them. These days there’s so little movement in the dice it feels half way to cheating.

Some of my best dice are the FW Legion dice they did a while ago, even if they weren’t the cheapest around. Nice legion colour-schemes that match your army, legion symbol on the six and pips on everything else (even the one), rounded corners that allow them to roll - it’s everything I want in a dice, besides no availability and higher price point. At least the Necromunda and Titanicus dice follow suit with these rather than the GW standard.

But that's one of the best parts about their dice: they have actual corners. This leads these dice to be closer to the theoretical values. There's a reason casino dice are shaped like actual cubes. Small, rounded dice with holes for the pips tend to roll disproportionate amounts of ones.

Why do they do that (ones)?

The reason "Casino" or craps dice roll proportionally is because they are machined to 1/10 000 of an inch, known as being precision dice, and not because of their shape. You actually need to throw them at a wall to get those results too because they don't roll well at all.

If you want to have some dice that rolls the theoretical values while actually being usable on a table/dice tray you want to buy the same dice professional backgammon players use. Those are also precision dice but with rounded corners so they actually roll and get the proper randomisation much easier.

Craps dice also tend to chip easily, and are pretty huge and unwieldy too for that matter.

Quite some time ago I read an article by (or about?) some who built a device to automatically roll dice and have some of his students evaluate the results. I think they had more than 100000 dice rolls. His theory was that it came from the uneven mass distribution (holes from the pips), and that the rounded corners could not prevent the resulting momentum to affect the result. IIRC the average was 29% ones, but went down to < 19% after "adding" corners to the dice. Also, bigger dice had better results, due to less of an effect the holes and probably also the manufacturing tolerances have. And translucent dice show you, if there is any air inside the dice.

It was not published as a scientific paper or anything like this, but it sounded plausible.

The Size is good , they aren't difficult to read , and I think they look pretty nice

Which is one and which is six? The skull or the imperial sigil?

Imperial Symbol is the 6 , Skull is the one , never had any complaints from my opponents on them being difficult the read , the imperial knight dice tho .. yea those are pretty bad.
