01: Rebooting for 9th: Long Live Crusade!

I started posting during the final year of the 8th edition, and I've moved so slowly that 9th is now well underway. I'm glad that I waited long enough to see the advent of Crusade; this system is exactly what I wanted for the Chronicles of Saint Katherine's Aegis since the days of the Witch Hunter dex, and it feels great to have the tools, even if I have to wait some time for the Crusade content from or 9th dex.

The campaign architecture is undergoing an overhaul; the Adepta Sororitas will now be represented as a set of Crusade Rosters. I've made a lot of decisions about how I want to grow my Sisters during the transition from 8th to 9th. The first is that I will be using Crusade Rosters for OoOML, Bloody Rose and Sacred Rose. Each Crusade is separated from the others, both in time and space. Eventually, the events of the campaign will draw these three Crusades together and forge them into a single, unstoppable fist of the Emperor's will.

02: History

The core of the Sisters force is an Order of Our Martyred Lady Battalion that begins the campaign on Orison's Wake- an agriworld in the Desdaemona system.  This small collection of inhabited worlds sits on the far Western Fringe of the Imperium. During the Reign of Terror. the system fell to the forces of Cardinal Bucharius and all three inhabited worlds were enslaved. Even after the death of Goge Vandire, Bucharius maintained his control over the Desdaemona system until the Thorian reformation, when Saint Katherine herself liberated the system. The Chapel of Saint Katherine's Aegis was built on Orison's Wake to honour her Victory, and a Commandery of the Martyred Lady was established to protect it. Imperial records indicate that Katherine was present for the consecration of the Chapel, but what is not known is that Katherine visited the Chapel again before her final battle with the Witch Cult of Mnestteus, and deposited the Praesidium Protectiva beneath the altar to prevent it from being defiled in the event of her defeat. Her premonition was correct- she fell in a battle with so few survivors that no one lived to report the absence of the Paesidium during the fighting; it was presumed lost to the cult and never recovered.

Shortly after Katherine's demise the destruction of a experimental relay station isolates the system from the larger Imperium. After thousands of years of isolation, the Praesidium is recovered by Palatine Jahallla Athebraxis. Many among the Commandery's most faithful  believe this discovery to be an omen, and indeed the augury once again proves true. The Cicatrix Maledictum  rips the galaxy apart, and in its wake, the path between the Desdaemona system and Holy Terra becomes clear once more.

The Commandery of Saint Katherines Aegis is about to be reunited with their Preceptory. Upon verification of the Praesidium's authenticity, Crusades from the other Orders will be dispatched with their chapter's most sacred relics to form the Triumph of Saint Katherine.

04: Order of Battle, Order of our Martyred Lady

The following list represents the assets of the Commandery of Saint Katherine's Aegis prior to its reunion with the greater Imperium.  While the Commandery can fight as a unified Battalion, its forces are stationed to defend multiple territories; by default, they are organized into 3 distinct patrols, one to defend each of the churches deemed Holy enough to act as Battle Sanctums.

Fortification Network: The Sacred Sites of Orison's Wake- 9 PL

01. The Chapel of Saint Katherine's Aegis: Location- Aegis City, 3 PL

02. The Mission of the Grain Maiden's Veil: Location- TBA, 3 PL

03. The Mission of the Weeping Widow: Location- TBA, 3 PL

Because these three churches are at separate locations, they can only be used in battles fought at those locations, meaning only a single sanctum can be used in any given battle. At each of these sites, the presence of a Battle Sanctum means that only battles of 51 + PL may be fought here, because a Battle Sanctum can only be fielded as part of a fortification network, and games of < 51 PL are restricted to a single detachment. Because each territory is represented by a persistent Onslaught sized board, it is possible to "slice" the board in such a way that the segment of battlefield you're using does not include the Sanctum.

If an attack on a church is severe enough that the Patrol is mismatched in PL with the attacker, units from other locations may be borrowed for the battle to even the match, but all such reinforcements must be set aside as strategic reserves. These reserves may arrive as early as turn 2 provided there is an airfield territory under Imperial control in both the settlement where the church is being attacked and the settlement from which reinforcements are being requested. If both settlements have a rail yard territory under Imperial control, reinforcements can arrive as early as turn 3. Note that it is possible to pull reserves from  two settlements. Note also that in some circumstances, reinforcements from one settlement may be capable of arriving on turn 2, while reinforcements from the other may be required to wait until turn 3. And finally, when reinforcements are pulled, it is not necessary to bring the entire detachment stationed at any given settlement, only the specific combination of units required by the defending player.

When attacking, the Crusade can use campaign turns to travel between territories prior to the commencement of the battle, which means that the entire force would be available on the first turn, In order to do this, however, there still must be either an airfield or a railyard connection under Imperial control between each of the forces involved in the attack. Here are the forces, listed with the locations where they begin the campaign:

Patrol: The Mission of St Katherine's Aegis, Patrol Detachment, 22 PL:

Cannoness Shayla Rayne, 3 PL

Celestians x 5, 4 PL

Battle Sisters x 10, 7 PL

Dominions x 5, 5 PL

Patrol: The Mission of the Grain Maiden's Veil, 10 PL:

Cannoness Veera Strife, 3 PL

Preacher Gideon Krayle, 2 PL

Crusaders x 2, 1 PL

Battle Sisters x 5, 4 PL

Patrol: The Mission of the Weeping Widow, 10 PL:

Misionary Lethos Mayhem, 3 PL

Death Cult Assassins X 5, 3 PL

Battle Sisters X 5, 4 PL

And there you have it, 51 PL in total. Next post will include background and load outs for the Mission of Saint Katherine's Aegis!
