What the Showcase is Not

While the Liber Showcase preserves some of the intent of the Librarium, it is built upon the discussion forum structure such as the other forums found throughout the Bolter & Chainsword. The Librarium was an add-on that we were able to use at that time, whereas the Liber Showcase, built on the inherent structure of the board software, can remain permanently. Though the Liber Showcase is built on the same discussion forum structure that other Bolter & Chainsword forums are built upon, it is not a discussion forum where discussion takes place. Articles are presented for your viewing pleasure, but discussion on the articles will take place in other forums.

The Liber Showcase is not a trophy case for only the “best” articles.

The Liber Showcase is not restricted to only those articles that conform to canon. There are some caveats to this, but we want to encourage hobbyists to exercise creativity in making the game their own and in sharing their creations with others in order to give them choices in how they enjoy the hobby.

How the Showcase Works

The Liber Showcase serves as a repository of finished articles. Unlike other forums where discussion takes place via replies, the articles in the Liber Showcase are here to be read. Members are unable to reply to the articles herein.

A basic expectation is that articles won't be submitted until they have been discussed elsewhere, allowing members to provide feedback so that article authors can consider that feedback and make any adjustments they feel are necessary to improve the article. Once the author has completed revisions and the article has reached a point where the author feels that it is finalized, the article may be submitted to the Liber Showcase. This isn't a process of moving the original to this forum, however. Instead, the author simply posts the final version of the article as a new discussion in this forum. The article won't appear (even to the author) until a moderator reviews and approves the article.

Members can comment on the article by following the link to the original discussion. Similarly, though submitted articles are "final," article authors are free to edit and update the article if it continues to grow.

Articles from Other Websites

In addition to providing a showcase of finished articles derived from content found throughout the Bolter & Chainsword, a secondary goal of the Liber Showcase is to provide a repository of similarly useful content from around the internet. If you see an article that you think should be recorded here for posterity, there are two very important first steps:
  • Get the original author's permission =][= IMPERATIVE =][=
  • Discuss the article in the appropriate B&C (sub-)forum
We won't poach or plagiarize other peoples' articles/content. Some people are protective of their work, and rightfully so. In order to be respectful of other hobbyists, we need to be honest with them about how their article will be used and respect whatever response they provide, whether approval or disapproval. A request to an author can look something like:
I found your (article name) article to be entertaining and informative. Would you be interested in a copy being posted at the Bolter & Chainsword website (www.bolterandchainsword.com)? If you are, there are two ways that the article can be posted. The preferred method is for you to post the article yourself. If you are not already a member at the B&C, you can create an account for free and without any dues or costs. Alternately, I can post a copy of the article on your behalf, giving you full credit as the original author and linking back to your original article website. Posting the article at the Bolter & Chainsword will, hopefully, expose it to more hobbyists; and it will also serve as a backup copy in case your website ever suffers a catastrophic failure or is discontinued.
If a hobbyist gives permission for their article to be copied here, we'll identify them and the original article website prominently at the top of the article:
This article created by (author name) at (name of the website).
(website URL in the code tags)
Posted at the Bolter & Chainsword by permission of the author.
Note that posting a copy of an article here at the B&C will most likely require extensive use of the BBCodes.

Rating Articles

Though discussion of articles takes place elsewhere, members have the ability to rate articles. You'll note five stars for ratings at the top right of the page. If you choose to rate articles, you are free to use whatever metrics you desire, assigning from 1 to 5 stars to an article.

As with other topics/posts, members are also able to LIKE articles.

Downloads

A complement to the Liber Showcase is the ability to convert an article to a format that can be downloaded and, optionally, printed. The mechanism for this is our Downloads section. You can see guidance on using the Downloads in this discussion, and you can find some templates for article formats here.

If you make a downloadable file available, you can include a link to the file in your Liber Showcase article.

What Types of Articles Can Be Submitted to the Liber Showcase?

As previously described, articles found herein will usually be related to background, homegrown factions/characters, and homegrown rules. This isn’t strictly limited, though, and we don’t want to define anything. Some examples of the types of articles you can expect to find are:
  • DIY Adeptus Astartes Chapters
  • DIY Adepta Sororitas Orders
  • DIY Heretic Astartes warbands
  • DIY Aeldari craftworlds
  • DIY Drukhari kabals
  • DIY Tyranid hive fleets
  • DIY inquisitors and their warbands
  • DIY Astra Militarum regiments
  • DIY Legiones Astartes forces
  • DIY Adeptus Mechanicus forge worlds
  • DIY Imperial Knight households
  • DIY renegades and heretics
  • DIY Necromunda gangs
  • DIY Titan Legions for Adeptus Titanicus
  • DIY [special] characters
  • fan fiction
  • etc.
The list above might change as the span and scope of what is appropriate evolves over time.

Articles about tactics may be submitted to the Tactica forum; and articles about modeling, converting, and painting may be submitted to the Tutorials and How To's forum.

Submitting an article to the showcase

In most cases, before an article is submitted to the Liber Showcase it should be discussed and refined elsewhere throughout the Bolter & Chainsword. So a DIY Adeptus Astartes Chapter will most likely be discussed in the Liber Astartes forum, a DIY Genestealer Cult will most likely be discussed in the Liber Xenos forum, etc. Once the author is satisfied that the article is finished based on the feedback provided, they are free to submit the article simply by starting a new topic here in the Liber Showcase.

Two things that must be included in any article submitted to the Liber Showcase:
  • Link to the original article. This will serve as the discussion topic for the article, leaving the actual article

Editing and Updating an Article in the Showcase

Once your article is approved, you should be able to edit it and update it freely (both via the editing process). If you update the article by adding replies, those replies will have to go through the approval process.

While articles should be “finished” when they are first submitted, hobbyists are encouraged to continue working on them and to update the articles whenever those expansions are finished. Ideally, those expansions, too, will undergo a review and refinement process in the article’s discussion topic.

The moderators will do their best to preserve backup copies of articles that can be reverted to if there is an error in updating. If you make an error when editing your article and need to revert to the previous copy, REPORT the article and request a backup. Note that if you edit your article, you should notify the moderators so that they can update their backup.

If members identify spelling/grammar/format errors in articles, they should REPORT the article and include a description of the error(s) so that the moderators can take appropriate action.
