Blackshields - Endryd Haar

Hi everyone,

I’m contemplating starting a new legion and I find myself drawn to loyalists from the XIIth legion led by Endryd Haar. I quite like his background, plus he’s a great character in game. However, I love the idea of running marines with chain axes and shotguns and the blackshield list allows me to run some shot gun wielding maniacs!

Here’s the list:

Blackshields 2000pts

Wrought by War: Chymeriae (fleet/fear/rage, -1BS)

Endryd Haar - 185pt

Marauder squad x20 - 395pts

Shotguns, x5 power axes, artificer, nuncio vox.

Assault squad x15 - 355pts

Melta bombs, x4 power axes

Assault squad x15 - 355pts

Melta bombs, x4 power axes

Primaris Lightning - 220

X4 kraken

Phosphex bomb cluster

Sicaran Arcus 260pt

Sky spear missiles, lascannons.

Whirlwind Scorpius 115pts

Whirlwind Scorpius 115pts

The idea is Haar scouts the three infantry units and sits in the large marauder squad, with the nuncio guiding support fire from the Scorpius tanks. Hopefully the cheap and efficient heavy support choices will balance the points investment in the infantry, which are pretty scary with the additional wrought by war rules (each marauder is going to generate 5 attacks on the charge at strength 5 with rerolls to wound).

Anyway, let me know your thoughts, is it too brutal?

I like it mate, it feels fairly original which is refreshing.

It's brutal but depending on the game type, big-squad brutality won't always win you games. The big squads will hit hard but with only three squads you'll feel fairly small and limited on a big board.

I envisage this list being a bit like a shock assault SoH list. I often run SoH with 'swarm' style tactics by having lots of small cheapish troop squads everywhere. Seeing as your generating mass attacks high strength attacks on the charge, I'd go with multiple smaller infantry squads over big 15-20 man. It might be worth considering dropping an assault squad in place of two smaller 12 man marauder squads. 12 man squads are still a major threat with mass Str 5 attacks but won't be as expensive and you can afford to lose a squad or two towards late game.

You could scout the three marauders and even consider deepstriking the assault squad. If you playing objective games with your local meta, I'd definitely recommend a minimum of four scoring units at 2000pts.

As for your anti tank - you're bringing plenty of Str 8 which is great. The krakens are your only hard counter to AV14 but at 2000 hopefully you won't be seeing too many Spartans and Land raiders.

Nice list though man, I've really come around to Black Shield and shattered legions lists lately. Good to see more of them being used to break the mold.

Thanks for the feedback, I tend to run Coils of the Hydra at 2k with three troops and it feels ok. The problem with marauders is their base unit cost, a squad of ten with basic equipment is more than an assault squad. They are essentially veterans, but the bigger squad helps to alleviate that issue. The inclusion of assault squads will hopefully mitigate the potential board control issues, as will the ordinance from the Scorpius tanks, they can reach out to tackle long range artillery and infantry squads as my infantry advances, with the marauders and Haar holding the centre.

Black shields give you a +1 to the turn selection roll, so there is some innate ability to alter the probability of first turn artillery strikes. The hard counter for landraiders are actually my assault squads, melta bombs make a mess of armour used en mass and their mobility (coupled with scout) probably means a turn two charge. The lightning is there to nuke that annoying piece of armour that sticks around despite your best efforts to remove it, or Typhon.....

I think I might pull the trigger on this project!

I was considering an Endryd Haar loyalist Blackshields list myself for the longest time, but finally decided to go for a Nemean Reaver list as my next project. So, more power to you !

List looks good, by all means go for it !

So, as some of you may be aware, I’m slowly building a loyalist world eater force using black shield rules and Endryd Haar. The above list has evolved over time, quite considerably, and I thought I would include an updated 3k list for some advice:

Blackshields: 3000 points

Wrought by War: Chymeriae (fleet/fear/rage, -1BS)

Endryd Haar

Assault squad x15 marines, x3 power axes, Melta bombs, artificer.

Assault squad x15 marines, x3 power axes, Melta bombs, artificer.

Assault squad x15 marines, x3 power axes, Melta bombs, artificer, combat shield on sergeant.

Blackshield marauders x15 marines, shotguns, chain axes, x3 power axes, power glove on the sergeant.

Destroyer squad x10 marines, x2 rad missile launchers, meltabombs, jump packs, power axe, artificer and phosphex on sergeant.

Deredeo dreadnought, anvillus, boreas missiles

Deredeo dreadnought, anvillus, boreas missiles

Spartan assault tank, armoured ceramite

Macharius Omega, marine crew.

So the idea remains fairly similar, Haar scouts three of the four jump infantry units turn one. The fourth remains near the Spartan and moves up with it. Haar rides in the Spartan with the marauder squad. Deredeos provide some anti-artillery with their boreas and light AT with the anvillus, as well as anti air cover. Omega provides the psychological threat.

The list includes 55 jump pack equipped marines with Meltabombs, should be enough to deal with most armour!

Let me know your thoughts!

Do it! Haar is a beast in combat, given his T5 and Str8. He’s got a great background as well.

I think the list has a few weaknesses:

1. first turn counter assault - scout prevents you from assaulting in the first turn, so whilst you could be in the enemies deployment zone turn one it may leave you open to assault or short range shooting. This might work well vs gun line forces, but against a more assault oriented list it may be more of a liability. Choose when and where to scout wisely!

2. Macharius omega - it’s open topped, lacks armoured ceramite and only 6HP, so a decent opponent should be able to put this down in one turn. It’s there for fun, and because it’s an interesting option to model and use. In a more competitive game, I would swap it out for a typhon.

3. AP2/3 templates - clearly the list is infantry heavy, so artillery is going to be an issue. That’s why the deredeos are in the list, to remove high priority targets turn one. 8 boreas missles into the side armour of a Medusa battery or Scorpius tank should mitigate the threat.

Hope that helps! If you’re interested, check out the project using the link in my signature. Haar is built and painted, albeit in the glorious white and blue of his parent legion!
