Is the dark shroud still worth it?

Almost always I take a dark shroud with me but more and more I am wondering if it is still worht it.
It is fairly expensive and most armies have access to full rerolls now or ways to get +1 to hit.

For the same amount of points you could get 4 black knights.

What are your thoughts?

I do feel that the darkshroud has become too easy to counter, in pretty much any and every list out there now. The game has an overabundance of rerroll auras, +1 to hits, and other such rules, to the point that in most games I play for your opponent to roll just once and a regular ballistic skill, is weird and uncommon.

At 138 points, it does not do much in that sense... But...!

The speeder can unlock datalink telemetry, and the new one that gives everyone rerrolls to hit one target.

It can also get you line breaker late in the game, if your opponent has not made it an objective to bring it down.

And, it still matches up well with Flyers, for a -2 to be hit. Which counters some of the effect of the constant +1 to hit + rerrolls

The full rerolls instead of failed rerolls is interesting to me, as I’m only an infrequent casual player these days.

I would be interested in seeing a breakdown of the difference in probabilities to kill a biker model with and without.

I personally never thought the shroud was worth acquiring because while it is a cool model and a neat rule, it’s comparatively slow and expensive points-wise.

I've not used a shroud now for about a year as like others have pointed out its to easy to counter and your better off spending the points on something else.now I'm going to a tournament in March and I can't help but think in some games it might be useful or it might not a second land speeder vengance is more appealing if I'm honest

Astra Militarum gained new stratagem: for 2 CP they maximize volume of shots for 1 weapon, if they target a vehicle. So, there will be 12 s8 ap 2 or 3 (tank ace) damage 3 shots from Hammer of Sunderance Leman Russ tank commander. It will practically one-shot our Darkshroud.

Or Alpha Legion destroy it and make it explode with +3 roll (rerolls denied), damaging units near it.

With all this in mind, Darkshroud becomes a handicap of 138 pts. I prefer to take more troops/bikes/heroes for this price.

The thing I find is that armies still have to 'deal' with its -1 to hit bubble, at 138pts I think it's a little pricey (around 100pts + HB/AC?) but it can reduce effectiveness of your opponents shooting i.e. tau, hordes or even MEQs.

If a DS takes the brunt of the first turn 'alpha' shooting even at 138 pts it's pretty cheap, even if you have to now use 1cp to keep her alive with the RW 'counts as Jink/4++ strat'.

I have pondered taking two (another model though!?) At 100pts base that might work, givening you some redundancy.

That said some opponents i.e. Imperial Fists or Harliequins, I wouldn't take speeders (Vehicle keyword) because they can focus them out, I think that means you need a bike list and a speeder list for RW...

The Mobility RW stat is soooo good with speeders, not so much with the BKs and regular bike squads...

I guess I accept the premise that the DS us a bit expensive when there are so many counter but not taking it means your opponent doesn't have to counter it... Quite situational I think?

I wonder if it's mainly worth it now if you plan on running many flyers to get that -2 to hit (as Berzul pointed out). The Landspeeder vengeance might have a similar effect as to attracting enemy fire, but can actually deal some damage as well, what do you guys think?

I think the vengance might be better for the reasons you pointed out plus the fact it's almost 40pts cheaper. The biggest issue with the vengance is still the random number of shots it gets

That's a fair point there, it's only a couple of plasma cannons but she looks deadly right??? And again cheaper...

I didn't think the -1 to hit stacked?

2 shrouds won't stack but the -1 from the flyer rule and the -1 from the shroud do stack

The other thing people seem to forget is the vengance is base damage 2 with its plasma storm so 4 damage with weapons of the dark age and over charge. Just something to remember with the vengance at the end of the day it all comes down to what you want to run
