Returning SoB player

Hi,

I’m an old Adeptus Sororitas player from 4th edition but haven’t played since 6th edition and I’m struggling to figure out some new things. Also am a tread head and have something like several dozen various tanks. I’ve read the (very short) Battle Primer and Adeptus Codex yet many things remain confusing!

  • Rules that say “Re-roll to hit rolls” such as Celestian Squad’s “Sworn Protectors” does this mean shooting attack, CC attack? Both?
  • If Characters can’t join squads, can they embark in a vehicle with one? If not how do people adequately make use of Characters?
  • Can I use any building as a “Battle Sanctum” such as my old Firestorm Redoubt? Can Battle Sanctums have gun emplacements etc?
  • Should I convert/rebase all my old Sisters to the new size?
  • Does Order of the Valorous Heart’s 6+ feel no pain apply to SoB vehicles? Does it work on Mortal Wounds? Is this roll taken before or after Damage is rolled for?
  • Are Dominion squads actually gimped in that their scout ability doesn’t transfer to their vehicle? This was my mainstay back in 5th edition!
  • What are some good SoB tactics you guys have found for 8th edition which I should keep in mind while updated my army with new models?
  • Do the new plastic sisters mismatch with the old metal ones?

1) A hit roll is any attack roll where you are trying to hit, be it ranged or melee.  So they would re-roll both

2) Characters are indeed solo now, they can, however, embark on transports so long as they meet all requirements listed on the transport (it usually restricts to <ORDER> and non-jump units/terminators for Rhinos, all transports list their limitations and requirements).  A step further on this reveals that now multiple units can embark on the same transport, and the "dedicated" part of dedicated transport isn't so "dedicated" anymore... a bit change from older editions.

3) Fortifications like the Battle Sanctum are specific units... and while your local group or TOs may allow proxy terrain for them... I'm sure they're going to want it to be of similar dimensions.  The Battle Sanctum cannot have guns strapped to it, since it has no option to bring said weapons.

4) Yes.  Further on this: some tournament/event organizers may enforce base size restrictions where they only allow the most recent kit's base size... so no 25mm terminators... or 25mm sisters.  If you're looking to play in events, it would not be a waste of time to ensure you are on 32mm for your stock sisters.

5) Yes.  A model loses wounds AFTER it fails all of its saves.  Hit > Damage > Save > Damage roll (for multi damage weaponry) > "Feel no pain" rolls for each wound inflicted > deduct wounds and remove as necessary.  It applies to all Valorous Heart units, including vehicles.

6) Dominions were the hardest hit on the conversion from old rules to new Codex.  They cannot confer their scout rule to vehicles.  What Dominions did gain, however, is a niche use for 4x Storm Bolters per squad to maximize "Blessed Bolts".  They are definitely diminished, but still have a role in the army.  Additionally, they can "Advance" before the game begins for some extra movement.

7) Valorous Heart + Imagifiers is pretty much the simplest synergy you can see.  It has a lot of impact on the table.  Bloody Rose Zephyrim are also really nice with their volume of attacks, Miracle Dice to land the charge from deep strike, and Tear It Down stratagem.  There's a few other synergies, but those seem to be what's holding the army up and making the model range punch a bit above its weight.

8) They're noticeably different.  A bit bigger and the style of the individual poses is wildly different from plastic to metal.  Is it so much that you cannot mix the models?  No.  But I know I want to replace a large portion of my metal minis with plastic ones... they did a pretty good job with them.

1) it applies to any hit roll. So yes, both shooting and combat a d even overwatch.

2) Yes they can embark in a vehicle with a squad- as long as they're a room in the vehicle of course.

3) Until the official model comes out I suppose you could use any ruin as a proxy. But the real model is coming soon. No gun emplacements.

4) Only convert your old base sizes if you plan on going to tournaments. Otherwise, there is nothing illegal about your old models using the bases they were sold with.

5) Yes to vehicles. Yes to mortal wounds. It's rolled after damage roll; one die per point of damage.

6) Dominion losing their scout in a transport has Definately made them lose a bit of appeal in competitive scenes. Though they're still a unit that can take 4 special weapons and a combi weapon which is still tasty.

7) I favour mech sisters myself. Exorcist rear fire support, core of obsec battle sisters in immos for objectives and sprinkling of Seraphim for deep strike. Add in close combat to flavour. Nothing has really drastically changed.

8) Only in size. Otherwise the overall aesthetic is on the money...except for the new "repentia"...they're...different to the originals.

Don't convert your bases!  It's possible to get base adapters for cheap which extend the 25mm to 32mm.  Rebasing slottabase minis is a huge pain.  It is also possible to paint the rings different colours to separate battalions if you run two different factions, i.e. Argent Shroud and Valourous Heart.

As others have stated, Valourous Heart three exorcists, canoness for re-roll 1 bubble and imagifier is a fairly standard combo.  Other than that you can sprinkle with whatever else you like to play with.  Immos with flamers are very solid this addition.

Ahh yes I have seen those conversion kits. Good point. Typically I like to paint the bevel of my bases.

Sounds pretty good, I knew Valorous Heart was gold when I read it. Imagifiers look good too.

Thank you, that is unfortunate about Dominion, kinda bummed about that.

Thanks, do we have any idea though what, when or if the Battle Sanctum will actually be an official model?

Nope, GW dropped into radio silence with the second half of our release after a hot-and-heavy couple of weeks last month.  Lots of people wondering when that second pass is happening.  It has the Seraphim/Zephyrim, Immolator/Rhino, Imagifier, Dialogus, Repentia + Superior, Canoness, and Battle Sanctum, at the least.
