So, it's been a while since I've worked on getting a DIY chapter done and completed but I feel inspired after reading through some the of more recent lore to do with the Indomitus Crusade, Great Rift and the whole Dark Imperium. Hopefully this time I'll be able to avoid the butterfly syndrome and get a solid idea. In any case, here's some rough notes of what I've got so far:

Ultramarines Successor

Main themes

  • Headhunters/barbarians/revenants/spectre

  • Embrace death/vengeance/sacrifice

  • Chapter assaulted

  • Reforms in Indominus Crusade, form ties during time

Homeworld

  • Baratrum (?)Purgatory

  • Locals think world is test by Emperor

  • World lost during the Great Rift and chapter ended up regrouping

  • Reclaimed during Indominus Crusade

  • Mountains? Highlands

Recruitment

  • Chaplains inspired by Moirai

  • agent/shamans bring promising recruits to trials’

  • Families believe their sons die and become spectres

Organisation

  • Companies are more autonomous/independant than in codex eg space wolves(?)

  • Marines progress in company as a team, squads gain favour while 1st squad are veterans (?)

  • Return to Codex with Primaris reform?

  • Librarians form two orders:closer to witcher(Improve own abilities, speed etc), farseers predicting threats

Beliefs

  • By becoming astartes, chapter believes they’ve sacrificed their humanity so others may hold onto it. Cold/Detached

  • Emperor made ultimate sacrifice to defeat Horus and is perfect example of what to aspire to.

  • Tech Priests are rather separate within chapter due to Emperor/Omnissiah conflict. Bionics are used only when needed

  • Beliefs diluted due to Primaris newblood?

Tactics

  • Shock and Awe/Ambush prefered.

  • Take out head and create panic. Terror tactics see Raven Guard

  • Less focus on armour

Shameless double post but wanted to write down more on how and why the chapter was formed since I didn't really cover that. Project Spectre is also a stand in for now but yeah, here we are.

Genesis

  • Formed during the 3rd founding after the War of Beasts in order to help restore order to the Imperium
  • Taken from Doom Eagles 4th Company survivors who were thought dead during the War of Beasts
  • Due to Doom Eagle beliefs, there was turbulence due to beliefs of final deaths. Was easier to ship marines away
  • Young chapter threw themselves into orks, working with guilt for surviving.

I'm still sorting through ideas and what not but any thoughts or C&C would be greatly appreciated.

Just some nippicking:

How did they feel guilt as whole? That the Skelleton Crew of the DE i understand. But why did it affect all?

And the 3rd Founding is before the War of the Beast. The 4th after.

And could you Change the Colour? Its near imposibble to read on mobile, its to whitey.

Beside that, nice Work, iam eager to read more.

Cheers for the responses guys. There must of been some error when I copied my notes from my doc to the forum so it should be back to the normal font colour. Now, as for your feedback:

I will admit, there has definitely been some inspiration from the Emperors' Spears as for how the homeworld see's the chapter however, there is differences in how the chapter would treat the local populace compared to them. The first one is that they hold a very distant relation in terms of ruling it. They let the people war amongst each other etc but they are not seen making commands themselves. Instead they send mortal envoys who in turn take potential recruits away from their families and put them through the trials. Think along the lines of Batman and how he's seen to the wilder public in Gotham. He's considered a myth to the lowly commoners and that's how the chapter is viewed by their homeworld. This chapter fully plays on the myth they're created while with the EPs they are known to be seen in their ranks as shown in the book. I will however try and make it clear it's not just a copy and paste from his work and if the idea is not really working out then I'm sure there's other ideas that can be explored.

For the guilt situation, there has been a few cases where it has been shown to impact those who were not perhaps involved in a bad event. The first is the Osiris Rbellion for the Ultramarines during the Great Crusade. They suffered a great loss at the hands of the Osirian Psybrids and the shadow of that loss was carried onto the new recruits that came into the fold. It took Guiliman finding the race again and launching a direct assault that was able to wipe the threat out and restore the honour of the Legion. The second is the Doom Eagles themselves who followed their first chapter master Aquila into grief and guilt for the Calth Atrocity happening in the first place. He hammered his beliefs straight into the new recruits he brought into the chapter that his impact is still felt to this day. It's also why I thought it linked in well to the chapter and decided on them being the parent chapter. In any case, it seems to suggest that this trait has popped up in Guilimans' geneline multiple times so it seems like a common enough thing that ties in well to 40k in general.

As for the founding situation, I may of misread it somewhere that the 3rd founding happened after the War but in any case, it's not a big problem and can be easily fixed.

Thanks for the responses guys, I should have some new stuff coming up soon when I get the chance to get some more notes down happy.png

That looks like a good spin on the idea and should work nicely.
