In Praise of Penitent Engines

When I first saw the new sculpts, I didn't like them as much as the classic versions, and I almost doubled down and stocked up on metals before they went OOP.

And then we found out about Mortifiers and Anchorites, and that new models would be $70 CDN for two instead of $45 CDN for one. And then I bought a box, and d@mn! I am converted. Their are so many builds in that box, it's insane. I only expected to be able to build 1 anchorite per box. Imagine my joy!

I've got a real thing about symmetry. So I've got 3 painted classic PE that I used to field as 3 separate units. Now my plan was to field them as a single unit and gradually build 2 units of 3 morifiers, including one Anchorite for each unit. To know that I can make my first model in Each unit the Anchorite; by a box, ad a mortifier to each unit. Then a final box finishes the flank squads. Bi-lateral symmetry every step of the way.

The PE part is more complicated because I got one in the big box. The only way it ends in symmetry is with 4 more boxes- 2x3 PE to flank the classic unit; but that still leaves me with an extra model. Build it as an Anchorite, then one more box for a pair of Morties to finish the squad.

Now I know, all these things aren't practical in games. But I just want to see Karamazov lead 3x3 PE's and 3X3 Morties incl. Anchorites into battle. It costs 1143 points. The rest goes to Repentia, R-Superiors, a BR cannoness, a Missionary, and Arcos. The idea is that every single penitent model in the army is someone who was sentenced to excrutiation by Karamazov himself. He is essentially mobilizing those he apprehend, convicted and sentenced, driving them to redemption or death in the name of the Emperor they have forsaken. The canoness, the missionary and the R-Superiors are trusted enforcers that help maintain control and assist the administration of the Emperor's judgement.

I'll get hammered on CP and objectives with no troops choices, but it's going to look SOOOO good!

This is something that's delighted me about the new Sisters releases - they really get back to the grimdark aesthetic that I think is the core of 40k, but has been forgotten somewhat the last few years - I'm going to be using some Sisters, and probably some Arco-flagellants, to inject that back into my Templars.
