New beginnings are always a good time to set up retcons. All new developments of the Void Eagles will take place in this thread.

++ Legio IV: The Void Eagles ++

Numeration: The IVth Legiones Astartes

Primogenitor: Yucahu

Cognomen (prior): The Wings of Woe

Observed Strategic Tendencies: Large-Scale Astral Warfare, Aerial Superiority, Saturation Warfare, Area Denial and Scorched Earth Operation

Noteworthy Domains: None. The legion maintains various recruitment worlds and void-stations throughout the Imperium, among which Thelum, Vanadis, the Black Citadel, and Finistelle Station

Allegiance: Most of the Legion loyal to the Lord Regent

Void Eagles Armorial

Prowling through the deep reaches of space, the Void Eagles wage war from the heavens above. Trained in pragmatic brutality, the Fourth Legion cared not for high-minded ideals of their fellow legions or the well-being of their homeworld, for they claim no planet as their own. At the core of the Legion's tenets is the prosecution of the Great Crusade no matter the cost, imbued by their Primarch Yucahu, a fervent user of the most destructive weapons in the arsenal of the Legiones Astartes. His fanaticism for the Imperial cause would see him raised to the rank of Warmaster, a contested event that culminated with his assassination. Now without a Primarch, the Void Eagles' command structure has crumbled into individual warfleets supporting the various claimants to the Throne.

Sohrak Vekk, Admiral of the Tenth Division, commander of the Unmakers

Born of a an unremembered world, Sohrak Vekk was inducted into the Fourth Legion in its darkest times, in the early days of the Rangdan Wars. His first deployments were not the beginnings of a grand story, but gruelling, unhonoured battles, his very life one of expandable thousands. He was never destined to ascend beyond his despoiler squad. Yet he did thrive, surviving against the tremendous losses faced by the Legion, rising to command as officer cadres fell. As the Void Eagles were restructured from lessons learned against the Rangdan and Slaught, and the Inexorii were implemented to bolster their ranks, Vekk was chosen as one of the first Exactori, the disciplinary officers tasked with herding the half-breed Astartes into battle. His knowledge of hopeless battle and disregard for human life was distilled into one simple command: his troops had no worth as men, and their existence was one of self-sacrifice. By the conclusion of the Xenocides, Sohrak Vekk was one of only a few whose actions would warrant promotion into the upper echelons, most of the legion keeping the specifics of the Rangdan Wars under a shroud of secrecy. The denial of the Inexorii's existence — and thus their Exactori commanders' — meant that he would be written off as a captain of a 509th Destroyer Company (closer scrutiny show records of this company having fell at Velharva some thirty years prior, and never reformed).

During the latter years of the Crusade, Vekk's 509th was an outsider element, attached to the Sons of Nothingness and acting under the cover of their dark reputation. The unorthodox command structure of the Fifth Division was such that the less fanatic elements gravitated towards him, favouring his nihilistic vision to Admiral Alvator's delusions. When the corrupted mind of his nominal commander led him to more and more erratic expeditions beyond the light of the Astronomican, Vekk became de facto leader of a parallel structure within the Sons of Nothingness. While Alvator and his followers ventured to the Great Beyond, Vekk ensured the Fifth's presence in the Pharazine Campaign, and witnessed the ascension of the Primarch to Warmaster. It was at the Triumph that Vekk's position of power was legitimised, his commitment to duty commended by the Admirals, and the newly crowned Warmaster granted him lordship of the newborn Tenth Division. The Tenth would make Thelum its main port of call, the stockpiles of atrocities contained within its vaults well-known to its officers. Amassing a record of compliances in the galactic South, the Tenth, having earned a name for themselves as the Bringers of Despair, would see their conquests halted by the death of their primarch. Psycho-genetic echoes from Yucahu's demise affected many in the legion, but for the Bringers of Despair, whose ranks counted many improper inductees, the toll was massive. Falling to a simmering rage, hundreds had to be put down by their own brethren.

Sailing back with all haste to Terra, Vekk was among those Admirals who convened at the Council of Eagles, where he would advocate for the disbandment of the legion. His motion denied, and the authority of First Captain Dakkar unheeded, Vekk took under his command the most unstable elements of the Legion. They would deface their armour in the black of mourning and the grey of the fatherless, and name themselves the Unmakers. In those times of uncertainty, Vekk would lead his brothers in costly cathartic battles, seeking to purge the blight afflicting their souls.
