Hello everyone,

I am considering running a Deathwatch RPG campaign based on the Badab War - inspired mainly by the idea of this amazing thread.

I know there have been some rumblings before about the Heresy and I recall from that discussion that there was some appetite for the Badab War itself.  The scenarios would cleave to the Forgeworld books in spirit and may even provide some inspiration to get involved in cross-pollination with the Kill Team thread.

I know that using Badab as a setting may curtail the use of someone's DIY Chapter, as we will have a prescribed list of belligerents, but as I said, we will use the spirit of the setting, so as long as the idea is not too outlandish, we may be able to make it work.

I have done a small stint as GM in the Blackthorn/Sword Deathwatch game (Link in the signature) so you can check my style there to see if it suits you.  I will be using the style of RP and Combat that you can also find in that thread.  You can use either a dice roller like Orokos or if you prefer, may simply roll them on your table and tell me what happens!

This post is merely to gauge interest at this time and if it goes forward, it will have to be a team effort as I am a complete Luddite and I'll need help with the computery googledocs etc.

If you aren't up on to speed on the Badab War, I'd recommend having a look at this article from Lexi, which also list the Chapters who participated.

In order to make this easier all round, and to give the broadest scope for chapter choice (for the loyalists!) we would probably be looking at a timestamp of somewhere in 910.M41.

I will also be looking at recruiting two small groups of three to four, unless everyone wants to play Loyalists/Secessionists.  I'm not against everyone playing the same Chapter either, if you want to do that.  Each group will be formed into an Emergency Strike Team, with the Loyalists having Inquisition overwatch and the Secessionists having their own agenda.  The idea would be to avoid PvP, going more for a traditional Deathwatch Experience.

Since Xenos and Chaos did participate on the periphery of the war, seeing them in the campaign would not be out of order.

So, please let me hear your thoughts, ideas and queries.

MR.

Wow! Yes. I'll play what ever is needed to fill out the group. Loyalists/Secessionists does not matter to me both are equally amazing.

You have my power sword!

Dos recent "Back to Badab" move made me think of the possibilities of an Badab Era RPG as well. There is so much great fluff here already and still a lot of opportunity for filling up the blank spaces.
And I liked the way you were handling the Astral Claws in the flashback scenes in "Blackthorn" to bits. This is in great hands!

I'd be happy to participate at the best of my abilities.

Maybe...

Depending on the side we are going to be on I'd be willing to go outside my comfort zone withe an apothecary or Libarian... though I'd be most at home with Devistator or Tactical.

Though if Devistator I want to get an Autocannon, even as signature gear.

Well, I hear there's cookies... can't argue with that. ;)

And going wromg for all the right reasons is always a good story.
Just want to avoid a cheap Sabaan knock off especially if we are ending up with the loyalists. Accept no cheap aftermarket / post schism copies! :P

There is just a lot of interesting chapters involved in this !

Ah!  I see your concern smile.png

Well to be fair, it's quite up to you how the character comes across.  No two Iron Hands are the same and there is always the potential to fall if you're a Secessionist - after all, the Astral Claws do have warpsmiths after a fashion and conversion beamers.

Which Steel will try to...steal.  Probably.

On the Loyalist side are the Fire Angels, whose Techmarines are venerated and ride around in Golden Rhinos and worship the Big E as a god and don't use anything energy related - only boltguns, flamers and hard rounds.

That's not to say you are stuck on one side or the other - some Secessionists turned back to the light after all...and if the story calls for it, why not you too - or the other way around?

Really I'm interested in story first, so that's what I want to weave and like you say there's so many things you can do here! happy.png

The War for the Maelstrom Zone will be a few years old by the time the players enter it, so we will work on past missions etc to adapt histories (and rivalries) for the characters, following closely the model Commissar Molotov used for Blackthorn, although probably more slapdash as I'm rubbish with tech.

Everyone feel free to start Chapter and Character discussion here by all means and we can begin figuring where you all fit together.

Thoughts?

MR.

Oh, so this isn't so much about a sort of " historical. " campaign following the events of the War but more of a game about what happened next! That is very good information to have for character creation. Now, where is my drawing board...

No, I'd not try to steal the beamer... now if he does, that's a whole different thing.

But seriously, I just love the Autocannon both game play stats and fluff behind it, I've never been a huge fan of the Heavy Bolter that replaced it... ive always seen it as inferior.

@ Xin, the campaign will have the historical nature as setting, and you'll start in the depths of the war and carry out missions in the war.  If you survive, then sure, the aftermath can be explored ;)

Really it's about seeing how the characters react, how their loyalties are divided, beliefs challenged etc - but it's very flexible as far as I am concerned, there's a lot of room to move around in.

@ Steel, I'm sure an Autocannon can be found.  Somewhere.

I'll rip it off the mounts of a predator if I have too, but I'd rather start with it as signature gear as a precision Marksmen tool for a devistator.

Oh the fun you can have with that... :D

I like it. It also saves me a lot of time considering what and where the character was during the war. And keep my doodles tomAtmour Marks and not have to worry about how and how much mutation is going on already. :)

And so it all bolts together - you could even be a raw recruit to the Astartes and warzone, as several Chapters were rotated in and out of front-line duty, so if you wanted a blank slate, that would be absolutely fine too.

Steel, I have images of you Xin and Krash liberating a Predator now.

"Fellows, what have you got there?"

"Er, nothing..."

Welcome fellow traveller. msn-wink.gif

So, with four willing  victims  er, volunteers, so far, it falls to us to begin discussion of what side you want to be on.  From here we can really start to dig into the Chapters and options available to us.  A couple of you have said you're flexible, which is fair enough, but please be aware if you go for Secessionist, this will not be a Black Crusade game.  Technically you're all loyal to the Throne.

Well...one of them.

So what's it to be, any leanings?

I am unsurprisingly leaning towards they Secessionist. If only because it offers a potential backstory to being a heretical space pirate down the line ;)

But there are a lot of cool chapters on the Loyalist side, too. And people might go Renegade after witnessing the treatment of the Maelstrom Wardens.

Admittedly, I don't know ow much about the chapters in this conflict so I'm good either way.

Edit:

If we go for the Secessionists, I'm leaning towards an Astral Claw Devastator, an antagonist / rival from Akkad's past.

Secessionist would be fun.

Lamenters

Executioners

Mantis Warriors

Astral Claws/Tiger Claws(If you want to be really cool)

The eternal struggle/drama between these allied chapters would be incredible to RP. Fighting for there individual rights to exist.

#Hurondidnothingwrong (Guilliman would be praising Hurons resourcefulness if he saw what he was trying to do.)

And you are 100% correct this should not be a Black Crusade game.
