An end of something

Recommended Posts

I ordered two boxes of Cataprachti Terminators from my local GW shop less than a mile from my home and picked them up today. I noticed they no longer have any box art.

I always save a box for the art as a reference but am thinking this squad could be going the way of the Dodo bird in regards to 40k.

To my knowledge, no Forgeworld stuff has box art. Also, some of the direct only stuff doesnt, either. Like the Thunderfire Cannon.

This is just the generic box for stuff they don't have boxes prepared for, which I imagine is stuff they don't have planned to sit on retail shelves.

These white boxes are for everything "mail order only", everything thats not in a regular store on shelf comes in these nowadays.

Luckily that means nothing for the lifecycle of kits. Some eldar stuff comes in these boxes for ages already

As has been said above, the plain boxes are for direct only items, and when box production falls behind plastic production.

Stuff that goes in GW stores will be normal box art. I think for a while in 2013 after an FAQ GW couldnt make enough whirlwinds so they were in white boxes for a while.

Available to order/online only kits many times have those white boxes. The mk IV space marines have them, as well as other kits like RW bikers, etc.

I think it is just cost saving to reduce the amount of box types to print.

Those sized citadel boxes can only be used for plastic sprues, so I don't see why them being plastic is relevant.

They are plastic models and used to have box art.

As the others have mentioned, this is totally normal, GW have been doing this for years and it has no indication on a kit's lifespan. When a kit moves to "Direct Only" they put them in white boxes instead of the boxes with full art. It's cheaper for them to do it this way as they don't need to pay for expensive printing that customers won't see on the shelves in stores.

Basilisks, Whirlwinds and Hellhounds all come in white boxes now as a couple of examples.

Anything from the "Direct Only" range will be supplied in a white box.  The reason for this is that GW don't make or print the boxes themselves - they're done by a third party, so it works out cheaper as they're not paying for full-colour art to be printed (and it will not affect sales because the box isn't sat on a shelf in a store looking ugly), and it's also easier for inventory management as they only need a stack of each size of white box, rather than lots of individual full-colour boxes.  A while back when they were having inventory issues, a load of retail stuff (new Tau releases) were supplied in white boxes.

I have received stuff in one of those white boxes for something that had box art (an IG battle force), when they were at a time with many orders (around November), because the original got lost in the mail.
When they have no specific boxes available they just use those, faster than waiting for boxes to be produced to match the product.
I would suppose that for things sent to a store they would ensure it looks nice on the shelves, but for online orders they prefer speed rather than looks.
As long as they only speed up on the boxes... :)
