Centurions vs Agressors part two (post faq)

Hello all,

I am getting back into 40K after a LONG time. (I joined this site back in 2006). I have teenage kids now, and they looked at all my old books, and models, and then i saw the primaris marines... and... lets just say the Mrs is not pleased.

But ANYWAY..

I want an assault unit. I know bikes are on their way. I like the Centurions being able to switch from assaut to dev with some magenetized switches. I also found a tutorial (here) that shows how to build Centurions in a way that makes them look less like a mariachi band clown car, and more baddass Ironman Mk 2 armor.

I prefer the figures over the Bland but mostly ok Gravis (replaces Terminators) armor.

So before you say "why not get both", Here is my plan.

1) I have limited budget

2) I want to get 4 sets so I can make a 10 man squad, with two alternates

3) I play a lot of retro-hammer, so I will be using magnetized weapons to proxy this squad as terminators against my 2nd edition opponents. (So I can use the new models and the old rules).

I frankly like the look of the Iron Man mk 2 Centurions better.. so I am well leaning that way.

But now post FAQ, if I just happen to play an 8th edition game, will the Centurions still perform well as... centurions. Are centurions ok with deepstrike?Or after the Master of Ambush FAQ, should I really focus on Aggressors instead?

They don't have to be optimal, just good enough.

I know this thread comes across as "I know what I want, help me justify it".  I just don't want to drop this much money on a unit that has become worthless.

Thanks for the responses and please be kind to an old-timer!

The key difference now is that you'll need to wait until Turn 2 to Strike from the Shadows with Centurions. If you're intent on a first turn charge, your best bet is Master of Ambush Aggressors. The other thing to consider is that coming from reserves with SFTS counts as having moved, so your charges will be less of a slam dunk than with the MoA shenanigans. Still very achievable with a source for charge re-rolls or Hungry for Battle trait or the +2 Chaplain Litany.

Note that to put the Chappy where you want him, you'll have to plan ahead to get him close to the Centurions - he can't recite litanies if he's in reserve, as the chant happens at the start of the turn before the movement phase. A jump pack can help to blitz him into position, just make sure to stay in cover until he links up with the Cents.

Hope that helps a bit!

Just wanted to add to this:

If you look at a handful of RG Lists from major events in the last 3+ months, you will see most running 3 units of Cents. Well those lists could only have ever used MoA on one unit, which means the other two were likely dropped in using SFTS - which you can still do.

I think the unit is still strong, it just has a slightly weaker alpha-strike capability. The nerf removed the ability to reach out and smack someone with limited counter play on their part - which is a good thing.

My Inceptors are performing so well with MoA and the Phobos Captain that I’m thinking of trading my 2 boxes of NIB Cents away for either a couple Impulsors for the Thunder Hammer Sgts or more likely something in the next Primaris release line . . . or not going Assault Cent and building them as Grav. Just not sure I want to sink that many points and CP into a single unit.

The Aggressors are killing it coming out of the Shadows. “It” being anything they come “18” within hitting the table.

Which flavor of Inceptor are you running? How big is the unit?

There are quite a few examples of true-scale Centurions out there trying to fix the height/scaling issues the sculpt has.

One of the more popular/loved versions is our own Frater ST.Lazarus

5 Inceptors with Assault Bolters. Old school believer in units of 5 or 10 whenever possible. Same way with my Aggressors and maybe someday Centurions. They all need the extra bodies to still be effective after being exposed to a round of attention from your opponent. (imo)
