The future of Kill Team: a speculative discussion

Product management for Kill Team has been incompetent. Rogue Trader and Commanders show all the signs of being rushed products. The absence of the Inquisition as a Kill Team faction is a glaring fault. Marketing for the line has gone in the same direction as the availability of Kill Team branded product - crashed to zero.

Like it or not, what is needed now is a Necromunda-style 2.0 relaunch. Explicitly tie it in to the Crusade system in 9e, and there's your gateway. Fix the problems with Commanders, and give us Your Guys rules for Inquisition and Rogue Traders. It's not rocket science.

We were playing it right up till the lockdown, but very much as a group thing - two or three boards out, several games at once - getting together once a month. And that just doesn't fly at the moment.

Is kill team still a thing? it seems it is largely forgotten since last summer.

Im still waiting for Inquisition KT xD

GW still makes rules for KT in WD and they said that also some models from Indomitus will receive KT rules

For Inquisition in KT who knows? Maybe never

I hope they give proper support to it.

Disapointing it has been largely forgotten.

The best way to help is playing the game with others and bringing in new players. :)

I do hope they will bring in new faction that is better fleshed out. Sisters needs a bit more love in KT.

I’d like to see them consolidate elites and commanders into a new core book with all of the white dwarf factions included and more thoroughly fleshed out. Do that with a new starter set featuring new models for an inquisition kill team and either another new faction or an existing faction with new models and it’ll be a great way to draw in new and veteran players. That said, that probably wouldn’t come until Christmas at the earliest, otherwise it’ll distract from the release of 9th. Whatever the case I expect to hear more on kill team come the fall once 9th has taken full effect.

I had a look at the store today (uk site), no Kill Teams on sale there, just the starter and terrain.

To be fair, as you can make Kill Teams using most squad boxes from 40k, and the rules for them are covered in the books, you could argue that the starter and terrain sets are all GW need to keep available to support the game. At least, until the 2nd Ed of the game.

Well not gonna buy the annual on the cusp of a new edition.

Will wait and see.

I just hope it flourishes units own, and we have a few more made for purpose KT.

Are we on the cusp of a new Kill Team edition? Will Kill Team get a new edition along with 40K 9th?

I want a new edition of Kill Team to clean up the mess that we have today, because even with that mess Kill Team is still a fun game. Cleaning up the mess will make it better.

But a new edition of Kill Team is nothing more than wishlisting at this point.

There's could be a chance due the need to include SoS, SoB, CoB and their units that have not been put yet.

There's a chance. No confirming information, though.

I will keep saying that I think Kill Team needs a new edition, and I want to see it done and done well.

I doubt we will see a new edition of kill team anytime soon, as the beginning of an edition is not when GW does such things.  At the beginning of an edition, GW focuses its marketing (both in store and in White Dwarf) and its shelf space on models and codexes related to the launch of the new edition and then on the release of updated codexes as they come out.

It isn't until mid-late in an edition's life cycle that they release games that are spin offs of their core games.  This makes sense, as doing so after the hype and excitement of the edition change has passed makes sense - both in not diluting the focus of marketing the new edition, and as a way to give player's another way to play the game and to keep them interested (and buying) in GW miniatures.

So I would be very doubtful that we would see any new version of Kill Team until 2023 at the earliest, or see any further support (other than the odd article) until then.

I hope otherwise. Your reasoning is sound, however.

Warhammer 40,000 8th edition was released in 2017 and this version of Kill Team was released in 2018. And with WH40K 8e being the total revamp that it was, they had to focus early on getting all of the factions' codices released so that players weren't stuck using the Index books. With 9e, however, the 8e codices and other 8e rules (Psychic Awakening, etc.) generally work, so there isn't as much of a need for GW to focus on pushing codices out rapidly.

Yes but KT is like a Specialist Game so the cycle for a New edition will Be longer than 40k

2023 is a bit far but i don't see a New edition of KT before 2022

In 2021 we could get a New expansion like elites but focused on HS/FA unitsor maybe GW will release some rules and models for Inquisition

Basically the main in support will come from WD like the recent SoS list and the Annual IMHO

On the other hand, Necromunda's 2.0, the closest comparison we have, came very quickly - so quickly that at leat one of the books originally planned was never published and the gang slated for that book was released separately.

Going back to my critique of product management of Kill Team, unless that shapes up, Kill Team will remain a hot mess of a product line. If that does improve, all bets are off as to how and when the product line gets straightened out.

Necromunda was a total mess with rules spreaded across many supplements so they had to make a New core book to regroup All the rules in a single manual

Kill Team has all the rules in one book and only the rules for close confined combat in RT/Arena

Commanders is totally optional so is correct to be a separate book

Élite adds just new Units and opzione for the vario is factions and the 2019 annual have all the datasheets/missions that were released in separate boxes just under one single book

To me the KT situation is way simplier than Necromunda

Excellent point. That is a key difference between Necromunda and Kill Team.

I use Necromunda to illustrate how Kill Team can be improved from its current state as a product line. The Necromunda revamp was a restructuring of the product line, for all of the reasons you gave. Kill Team needs its own restructuring, even though the reasons are different.

They could use KT to make a few Xeno species, a few not mainstream guard regiments, etc.

Look at Warcry and Underworlds. 2 different systems with different rules and miniatures that can still be used on your AoS games, and give your army a bit of personality.

The same could be easily done for KT.

I agree, it seems like that was sort of the direction they were taking with Rogue Trader, though not for xenos specifically.
