The future of Kill Team: a speculative discussion

Nobody knows how much we must wait.... they didnt gave any date

They just released a trailer and from that you cannot say if it is expansion or new edition, when it comes, in mich form (book or boxed set or both) and so on

I dont think we will know anything about this new content for KillTeam before january

Considering how much GW ignores KillTeam in this last months my bet is that they will just announce it one or two weeks before the preorder and they will give us a couple of articles on WHC and that's it

A new Kill Team Mission Report article on WarCom pretty much confirms the forthcoming expansion will have rules for new models that were in the 40k Indomitus set: https://www.warhammer-community.com/2021/01/08/indomitus-space-marines-and-necrons-clash-with-new-rules-in-kill-team/

I for one will be looking forward to building Kill Teams with Assault Intercessors, and some of the new Necron stuff! :)

Mmm, very interesting, had they previously confirmed ALL units from the box would get KT rules? Seems a bit odd for some of the bigger necron models, and the outriders too...

The more units they add to KT the more interested I am in it; as it stands some factions have a nice variety in their line-up you can build a decent feeling team from, but others are really disappointing.

AdMech are probably my favourite, and when they add Indomitus stuff I'll definitely have a renewed interest in making a team out of my Blood Angels. Meanwhile whenever I try get my other half into a bit of coffee table skirmishing, with her modest collection of Sisters and Deldar, her options are really very bland. Out of the models she has, the game only really allows her to bring ten normal rank and file guys, with two specialists doing all the heavy lifting. They don't feel much like hand picked special forces, so I think opening up more customisation would go a long way.

I guess it's partially the nature of the game, being tied to the "main game" datasheets, and they obviously still want you buying more boxes to expand your roster, but still. I think it would benefit from a v2.0 that gives it more individual identity, or at very least collects all the existing stuff in one place.

I think KT was at its best when the GSC and Admech Gangs dropped- the Kellermorph and Manipulus is exactly what I would like from KT; use the range to release stuff that can be used in 40k when there is a perceived risk in the investment. They did the same with Rogue Traders- if those had been released JUST for 40k, there might not have been high enough return to justify the investment. Damn I love that box though... So nice to get a Rogue Trader with a retinue. Sure Janus and Neyam made friends with other explorers of Blackstone, but it's not like those other explorers are actually members of the Rogue Traders' Crews in the same way as the Starstriders.

Now that Blackstone is gone, you could rerelease Janus and Neyam in boxes with their respective crews.

Inquisition and other Imperial Agents are also perfect for a KT release.

Tau alien auxiliary are another perfect fit.

I'd like to see KT bring back some of the missing DE characters, but that's a tougher fit. I think DE are a really cool fit because of all the intrigue and infighting; I'd kill for Commorragh terrain. Only problem there is it would mostly be DE on DE, so who knows whether or not it would sell.

And the GSC KT roster needs to have Purestrains and Brood Brothers added to it so that you can play a campaign that grows a Cult. I love hybrids, don't get me wrong, but they literally cannot exist until a stealer infects a human and the human breeds. Both the stealer and the human, of course, are totally ready to fight for their cults. So get'em on the table!

Nice to have confirmation that something about it will be revealed, I hope it will be a full reveal rather than a piddly rumour engine pic of a Flayed One (or something else we've already seen).

Based purely on the fact that the trailer featured Flayed Ones and the minis have been shown but not released anywhere else, I think it has to be a new box rather than just a book.

If that is correct, I would assume crons v either Assault Intercessors (as the trailer) or ...maybe... the Inquisition(?) units we've had teased recently.

I wouldn't bet on scenery being included, if the game is set in cron catacombs then it could be more like a KT: Arena type of thing?

Ordo Xenos vs Necrons would be a nice starter set or battle box

But what i hope it a new edition or an expansion like élite giving access to Fast Attack an Heavy Support too

Kill Team is a good game but needs to be put in order with 40K in particular to the Crusade campaign system and profiles of Units an weapons

A New edition is more needed than another expansion IMHO

But i will take another expansion too ofc

Purestrains are already a thing for a Cult killteam - there's a note on p185, just above the Cult-specific tactics, allowing you to add genestealers to your roster.

And if you're playing a campaign, you could probably chat to the group and ask if you can include basic Guardsmen too. if not, use the neopyhte datasheet and mentally switch them to being brood brothers in your head - you could use Guard models for a visual distinction, even if the rules are the same.

Warcom preview is up. I started a new thread for boxed set specific talk, but closer to this thread's discussion... I really hope this is just GW going nuts before they announce a new edition of KT. Because a new version of Arena with even more units for the most bloated faction in the game is not what anyone asked for.

I will be somewhat mollified if the book has rules for other factions (Seraphim and Zepharim, please!), but still. Very disappointing overall.

l agree the new KT news was not what I was expecting.

The Pariah Nexus box set appears to me more of an expansion than any starter set. There is not enough necron models in the box for a normal 100 pt kill team.

... Unless this expansion is like another forum's idea "henchmen&Boss" respawning necron flayed ones and the marines mission is to kill the cryptek commander?

I do welcome the news that KT is being supported by GW at this time by coming out with this new product.

This expansion is good just for the added units and the models but only if you play these factions

The problem is that KT is fun if played in confined spaces Zone Mortalis style but the Arena expansion that was basically a tournament pack was a failure and OOP now while RT and PN are two expansions geared about specific factions

I will buy PN cause i am interested in SM rules and models and i have a friend playing necrons so we could buy one of these boxes each but i hope that in KT 2nd edition "Zone Mortalis" rules will be built in

Missed chance this box IMHO

The Kill Team products announced today include:

  • Pariah Nexus (we've already been talking about this - up for pre-order soon)
  • Killzones Expansion (it looks like a consolidation of the rules for previously released but now sometimes unavailable Death World Forest, Sector Mechanicus, Sector Munitorum, Wall of Martyrs, Sector Fronteris, and Sector Sanctoris sets)
  • Re-released Killzones (Sector Munitorum, Sector Fronteris, and Sector Mechanicus)
The Pariah Nexus rulebook includes all of the core rules, making that expansion a good starter set for anyone that doesn't already have the old book (or who wants the new Primaris, new Necrons and their terrain and killzone). The rulebook also includes the close confines rules, previously released in both Rogue Trader and Arena (so this is also good for anyone that wasn't able to get either of those expansions). There wasn't any mention (that I recall) of udpates, so it looks like we're still trudging along with a "1st" edition (we've seen at least four previous iterations of this game, though, starting with the "expansion" in 4th edition, so I'm not sure what to call this in terms of editions).

At the very least, this demonstrates that GW hasn't forgotten about or dropped Kill Team. There are some definite steps forward, but nothing significant enough to indicate a possible revision in the near future.

I wouldn't call this steps forward. I'd call it "playing catch-up": bringing out of print content back in a collected format, adding rules support for recently released models to a re-release of the core rules - as rumor has it, without incorporating the contents of the FAQ.

I'll say it again: poor product management. I cannot say if intentional or incompetent.

I've seen the contents page of the Pariah Nexus rulebook via a leak someone shared in a Facebook group, and the Core Rules aren't actually in this expansion. So WarCom, once again, have got it wrong.

I'm glad that GW are showing they're still committed to Kill Team with the Pariah Nexus release, and Kill Zones re-releases; and while I think updating Astartes following the launch of 9th and their recent Codex is a good move, it does leave the rest of the game in a strange position. Will they update the other Astartes (GK, Heretic, DG, TS) in line - 2 wounds etc - only when their Codices are all updated? That could make for a long wait - maybe even until the rumoured 2nd edition later this year.

I'm not going to get in to a rant about GW's planning and scheduling (they're working on multiple games systems and have various other schedules to keep to), but it'd be really helpful if GW could provide a road map of what plans (if any) they have to update the rest of the factions. As things stand, I've heard complaints from the Kill Team community that the balance of the game has been thrown off-kilter with the updates Marines have got. This is something that does need addressing.

An interesting nugget of info in today's Kill Team Pariah Nexus preview (https://www.warhammer-community.com/2021/02/26/new-rules-bring-veterans-of-the-indomitus-crusade-to-kill-team/):

We’ll have much more to share with you regarding the next evolution of Kill Team over the coming months

Does this lend credence to the rumours of Kill Team 2nd Edition later this year? Or does it at least mean that all factions are going to get updated in the way that Astartes and Necrons are?

More likely the latter. I have sub-zero confidence in GWs handling of Kill Team.

I'm sorry for the light necro, but any news on KT recently?

I'm working on a Tempestus list and I dont know if we can use the Tempestus tactics or not.

No, nothing new to report since the rumours of 2nd Edition later this year.

I think some feel that the rumours the starter set is Krieg v Kommandos has been given some credence by the shot in the Warhammer animation preview featuring an Ork hoisting up a Krieg guardsman; it seems like it could be from the 'trailer' that could go with it, seeing as it's similar style to the one that accompanied the 9th Ed 40k announcement, and that preview also contained shots of the Age of Sigmar 3rd Ed trailer - a week or so before that was officially unveiled..!

Wouldn't Krieg vs Orks be a pretty bizarre kill team set up? If one thing unites the two factions its that they field hordes of infantry, not small units - though I guess they would from time to time.

That said, I wouldn't be at all surprised if GW was to release both these units in another KT box, at least initially. Got to keep those scalpers in business, after all.
