Spectral Swords [WIP]

Recommended Posts

Im considering moving away from the Red/Grey to either Ultramarines Blue with a Black Shoulder patch or maybe a direct Salamanders scheme(Green/Black) with a different chapter symbol.

How about indigo armor with black pauldrons? A different shade of blue should help differentiate your IA Chapter from someone else's (including Games Workshop's canon Chapters).

The red and grey look fantastic! Now with the blue, it can look a little less striking mixed with the red (Brazen Claws non-withstanding with their Quartered Scheme)! If you wanted to go down that route and still make it striking, may I suggest going with a steel instead of grey? Key thing is the mix of balancing dark with light.

The green and black can definitely work, if you wanted to try and make it unique too outside of the Salamanders/Sons of Medusa, here's a few ideas from some of my colour schemes you could mimic or take ideas from:

These can also be mirrored easily swapping out the green with red or blue etc too. :)

Looking forwards to hearing more about these guys.

so after 3 months of hand wringing, I finally found a color scheme I liked on the model.  I even tried the green schemes and though they look nice on the ones recommended above, I couldn't make them look nice on the model.  I am also considering a name change to Knights of the Void.

The red-and-blue color scheme looks good. Is it meant to symbolize that, while the Marines are eager to shed blood, they will always do so with wisdom (what the blue symbolizes), to minimize "friendly fire" incidents as well as the collateral damage that hinders the reconstruction of worlds the Chapter reclaimed for the Imperium?

so after painting up 20 Intercessors, I was not happy with the results.  I had a change of scheme, and I am really happy with this new scheme.

I had to go back and look at colors I really liked the look of, and I decided on this. I know it's wolfy, but there are other chapters using this color on the big chart I have seen.

They will still be Ultramarines Successors of the Ultima Founding.

Thanks for all the help with the color schemes.  I know my end result was wildly different than our original target, but your thoughts and comments are appreciated.  I updated my original post, and my Ultima Founding Knights of the Void are ready to get some more paint on them.

The blue-gray armor reminds me of the Space Wolves. Is the color meant to invoke storm clouds, i.e., the fury the Knights display in battle? Ice that forms in the starry void, and the calmless which grants the Knights the logic they need to quickly and efficiently defeat their enemies, conserving resources needed to fight another campaign afterwards? Stainless steel, and the protection this offers?

I love this: ' Ice that forms in the starry void, and the calmless which grants the Knights the logic they need to quickly and efficiently defeat their enemies, conserving resources needed to fight another campaign afterwards'  I was just reading up on Iron Hands and I could get behind a chapter using logic to defeat their enemies but not replacing their flesh with steel.

I actually really like the new colour scheme, I think the red and grey was pretty much the Flesh Tearers, a bit too much of a close match. The blue could have worked but it needed work.

The ice-like colour is awesome and works really well with the subtle pops of accessories, and things like the red eyes.

Do you have any ideas for company/veteran/unit markings? I think they need a little 'something' in terms of colour to differentiate them, even if it's fairly minor.

I thought about putting a company number transfer on the left knee pad.  Veterans have white helmets, Sergeants have red.  I was considering Veteran Sergeants having a white helmet with the blue-grey stripe.

Also, I find that every color is taken multiple times, with subtle variations on themes.  Imperial Paladins and Ultramarines?  Very similar.

I have also been starting to think more about the home world, placing Ahiri-8 around the Temporal Rift Corridor.  It's just north of the Ultramarine Sector.  I imagine the 2nd-5th company(each company supported by 1st company veterans)  out combating the enemies of the Imperium (Chaos, Necrons, Tyranids, Tau, and Deathguard based on my current meta)

I imagine they would inhabit a Chapter Monastery isolated from the rest of the Hive Cities on Ahiri-8.  Maybe the Hives are separated by giant ice fields.  The chapter recruits gangers, but how do they go from a violent ganger to a Ultramarine-style tactician?  I guess through getting their aggression out in practice then teaching them better tactics.

As hive gangers, they should be familiar with urban warfare, ambushes, sniper attacks, and other guerilla warfare tactics. Anything else, that's knowledge the Drill Sergeants and the hypno-indoctrination (which EVERY Space Marine recruit undergoes) are meant to impart. To teach its recruits how to fight in different environments, a fortress-monastery has simulation chambers- similar to holodecks, from Star Trek: The Next Generation- as described in William King's novel Space Wolf.

On top of what Bjorn said, which is quite right, remember a lot of chapters will simply choose to take the most capable of potential child aspirants, who will get mind wiped before proper training. The nuances of how much of their life is wiped, how deep they go etc are left up to the author, as well as how they perform it. So far as I'm aware it's a physical-science, not psyker based, though the same action can be performed by significantly skilled Librarians or likewise skilled and stable human psykers. I've read of some chapters that screen each successful recruit with invasive mental and psychological investigation by Librarian, which is another kettle of fish yet again.

You have options, but it's more about what will fit in best with what you want your chapters warriors to be in terms of personality, how they act and what their potential flaws are.

As an aside, the Luna Wolves (later Sons of Horus then of course, Black Legion) recruited from ganger populations, As do the Imperial Fists from Necromunda (though I don't think it's exclusively gangers, so far as I remember), and then the Imperial Guard recruit plenty of gangers, such as the (again) Necromundan Spiders, who so far as we are told are actually quite an effective regiment.

Anyway, the choices are definitely yours and there's plenty of room to 'make it yours' as it were.

I hadn't realized my chapter name was close to Duncan Rhodes' Void Knights.  I have been struggling to find a new name. I had a few ideas crop up:

I like this one the most: Celestial Reavers(but maybe too Chaosy?)

Ghost Blades?

Spectral Swords?

I have been painting for months, and I have about 150 marines painted with around 50 to go.

"Celestial Scythes" or "Star Reapers" as a Chapter name, deliberately invoking the Grim Reaper and his scythe? An honor guard whose members wield war scythes that count as guardian spears? "Harvest the Emperor's enemies, so they may face His judgment!" "Blood and souls for the Emperor!" as battlecries?

Now having the same name isn't necessarily a death knell for being forced to change it. :)

he sheer bureaucracy of the Imperium and Adeptus Administratum means that Chapters of similar names and colours can be founded more than once. This actually happened when two Chapters of the same heraldry and name met each other and fought to the last in combat during one particular event. I'll have to find the entry that mentions it in one of the recent editions' Codex's.

If you are set on a new name, Spectral Swords certainly befits well. You can also use differing terms or names for swords, such as Blades, Sabres, Scimitars etc if you want to add a unique spin. Spectral Sabres sounds really nice alongside Spectral Swords.

Celestial Swords I believe is the one where they made two chapters and both are now wiped out.

I just have a problem with a name too close to a major known name painter.  My pedestrian painting skills does not stand up to his, and when they go, oh Knights of the Void? Void Knights?  Doesn't Duncan have that chapter name.

I am leaning into Spectral Swords now.
