Special Issue Boltguns WYSIWYG?

Recommended Posts

It’s the ammo not the boltguns so good luck with that.

So what you're saying is that if I just cut the mags off the actual Sternguard SIBs and stick them onto regular bolters, you'd accept it?

[...] I mean, Sternguard can't take regular bolters so what else would it represent?

Well, they could just be Company Veterans with Bolters for one.

I've used the Sternguard kit twice before and am getting tired of using the same 5 Weapons and pairs of arms for the same exact unit.

I've got no issue with kit bashing individual models (in fact, their rigidity is the one huge turn-off the Primaris Characters have for me), I'm just aware that I'm crossing into grey territory by essentially proxying one existing weapon model for another existing weapon model...

Company veterans are COMPANY veterans. They don’t specifically have to be part of the first veteran company (standard lore). They are the new name for command squads. And come in very different sizes. I don’t think your going to have issues with it. That said, here’s some options.

Give them a drum or box magazine, a scope, purity seals on the Bolter, paint the bolters a different color, paint them in your chapters first company color scheme. Take it a step further and just cover the entire model in purity seals, why not. Give each model a sling. Idk, there’s like a hundred different things you can do, many of them not requiring anything special for the Bolter.

I agree with this. Do no worry about WYSIWYG for a units starting equipment. WYSIWYG is primarily for optional equipment. GW have always had units with these questions, for example plague knives or ccws on grey hunters or plague marines. Grey Hunters just didn’t come with any obvious “ccw” for a long time. Many marine units have had both Bolter and pistol, but it’s never been necessary to put a pistol on every one of the models.

It’s also not necessary to do the entire unit when it’s a squad-wide upgrade, imo.

I guess the argument is "what's the visual difference between Sternguard with special-issue boltguns and Company Veterans with normal bolters", and the answer is "whatever you want it to be".

Company vets are part of the company your fielding (2nd 3rd ect) and sternguard are part of first company.

Yep, and not everyone paints Company markings on their models, etc.

Then I don’t know what to tell you. Bells and whistles can represent a tactical squad just as easily as a vet squad or a sternguard squad.

Maybe in previous editions, but take a look at the 8th ed SG entry. "Special Issue Boltgun". It's the boltgun doing the work combined with their marksmanship, no more ammo types. Aside from the SIB profile being what a bolter with Kraken Penetrator Round would be.

That said, SG can only take those, and SIB's arent available to anyone else, so it doesnt matter. Paint them gold if you like!

If I can tell the unit is special I don’t care. There was a rule concerning wysiwyg once upon a time where if an upgrade was <5pts it didn’t need to be represented. This was aimed at things like grenades, so you didn’t have to model them. If you for instance use the cloaked Dark Angels models as your Sternguard, or paint the units helmets differently, or even paint the edge of the base Gold. I would say it’s good.
