Weapons against Necrons

Welcome to the Guard :smile.: I've only recently got to fight Necrons again, but due to how 8th works most weapons will do work somewhere. They can have some decent saves, and there are special rules that allow them to ignore high damage weaponry on vehicles (Quantum Shielding is the rule I think - roll a die and if it's under the Damage taken it ignores it). This means that volume fire is better over direct high damage, such as Lascannons.

Fortunately the Guard can muster this in high number. From Leman Russ Battle Cannons to Autocannons and more you can reliably bring things down with mounting low Damage guns :smile.: These weapons will also be better turning their hand to infantry, where you'll want to wipe units to prevent them resurrecting. If you haven't already, do some research on the army to find out more and know what you're up against. I'm sure someone with more experience against the toasters can give you more advice :tu:

More importantly: what Guard models do you have so far? Have you got a colour scheme and/or army composition in mind? There's a lot you can do with Guard, and a lot of options to take - one of the many good things about the army :D

Starting out small, but that just means more time to get things in order  Generally Guard are the right type of opponent for Necrons; numbers to weather their fire power and long ranged guns to give it back. You'll need a good number of troopers to hold the line, your tanks will do the main work as is often the case.. A Techpriest or two will be worth considering later to help keep them in action. Perhaps Bullgryns also to counter some of their assault units (or just bash anything in range) - for the moment of course you should focus on the basics :smile.:

Have you identified the exact Anvil bits you want to use? What about the colour scheme? Will you stick to WWI inspired themes or conjure something of your own up?

Speaking as a Necron Player (and a new conscript to the Guard) WarriorFish is mostly correct. We really don't like high-volume low damage fire against vehicles, especially with a point or two of AP, as necron vehicles only have a 3 or 4 + for armor in most cases (the monolith being an exception, but the monolith also doesn't have quantum shielding, or any way to mitigate damage the turn it takes it).

You'll want to focus fire on one unit at a time. Unless you can force mass casualties to kill a unit from morale, canny (and lucky) Phaerons can and will bring a squad of one or two warriors back up to full in one go. If he has a ghost ark nearby, it gets even more difficult to deal with, as they let you roll Reanimation protocols a second time for warriors in a turn. This goes for vehicles, too, as many of them can regenerate wounds, and with the proper use of a stratagem, a Doomsday ark you thought was crippled at the bottom bracket all of a sudden lights up your artillery line at full BS, while pumping gauss fire into whatever hapless infantry squad caught within 24 inches.

Defensively, don't let scarabs get in melee, when wraiths get in melee (because make no mistake, they will get into melee) fall back immediately to shoot them next turn. You don't want to be in combat with wraiths at all, especially with squishy, T3 guardsmen with no armor saves--AP-2 melee is so delicious--but at damage 2 and S6 even tanks won't like being in melee with these suckers.

High-volume low damage stuff in general is a good idea vs necrons (though lasguns might have some difficulty with that--S3 AP0 won't do you any favors). Heavy bolters, multilasers, anything mounted as a secondary weapon on a vehicle that isn't a lascannon should do you good.

Punisher gatling cannon might be one of your best options. No AP but 20 S5 shots will terrify any unit it's pointed at--provided you can hit, of course :P

Good luck in your battles with your friendly neighborhood Phaeron.

With the magic of magnets you'll get to try all three :P Punisher is more flexible as it spits out lots of good strength shots, that can handle most things one way or another. Executioner is more specialised, in particular against heavy infantry but it'll do a decent job against armour also. The Tank Commanders BS3+ helps a lot, but especially so with the Punisher's high rate of fire.

Rule of Cool goes far regardless! Whatever you start with don't forget to keep us updated on your progress :tu:

I know you've mentioned the executioner turret for a leman russ but all plasma is good against necrons. A lot of it's about target selection really, so your lascannons and other high wounding weapons go into things like: destroyers, wraith and even scarabs. In a way the guard isn't too troubled by atomic shielding as most of our weapons are d3 damage and there's only a couple of ways to even get flat 3 damage.

The best weapons against necrons are high strength, high AP, moderate damage weapons. When shooting at necron vehicles you don't want anything that could do 6 damage. Here's a tier list for weapons against necron vehicles.

Strong:

Basilisks, Manticores, battle cannon/Hammer of Sunderance, plasma cannons, plasma guns, baneblade cannon, quake cannon.

Okay: Punisher Gatling Cannon, Autocannon, Krak Grenade, heavy bolter, powersword, power fists, bullgryn maul, hellhound inferno cannon.

Meh: Lasgun, multi-laser, bolter, frag grenade, frag bombs, frag missiles, heavy flamers.

Bad: Demolisher cannon, volcano cannon, multi-melta, Inferno Pistol, meltaguns, Banesword cannon, Hunter Killer Missiles, Krak Missiles, lascannon.
