After a multi-year hiatus from the game I'm trying to come back, figure out what works with our beloved Vlka Fenryka, and make a solid list. So this is my attempt and would love some feed back from those that have been steeped in 8th edition for a while to help a brother out.

The idea is to screen Bjorn with a steady advance of concentrated firepower between him and the Intercessors under the cover of a rune priest casting storm caller to provide cover.

The fenrisian wolves are mostly to fill out fast attack for the battalion roster but will be a further screen for the advance, as well as a first assault element if they manage to make a charge before Bjorn and the gang catch up.

I'll be outflanking with the Aggressors using Cunning of the Wolf. Heavy flanking fire power. With the Wulfen unit also flanking while escorting Harald to sew chaos into the enemy ranks. The wolf scouts will also turn up behind enemy lines to plasma soak any choice targets.

The long fangs will be setting up to handle enemy armor while the eleminators are there as cheap heavy support that can also try to pick off pesky aura characters or try to wittle down light armor vehicles to help the long fangs finish them off.

Any and all advice, criticism and/or improvements would be appreciated. Thank you brothers.

It's a good list! I like the Intercessor screen approach. It's tough, durable, and as Wolves, even our basic troopers are quite dangerous in melee.

What would you think about flipping 2 or 3 of the Intercessor squads to Auto Bolt rifles? That way you can add flexibility to Advance with those units while keeping up a high rate of fire, especially turn 3 on (Assault Doctrine). Also, are you planning on any melee weapons on the Intercessor Pack Leaders? Thunder Hammers or Power Fists really do damage with our traits. Also, an option with the new rules in Saga of the Beast is to make an Intercessor squad Veterans, giving them all an extra attack for 1 CP, if that fits your strategy.

Edit: Another thought. If you want to increase the durability of your Intercessor screen, adding in some Impulsors with Shields make for very tough nuts to crack.

After playing a few games I've started to value volume of fire this edition. I've redone the list and given 3 of the Intercessor squads the Auto Bolt Rifles.

I definitely want to add power fists to the pack leaders but trying to find point costs to fit them. I can drop the scout pack completely or take the Aggressors down to 3 from 4.

I could also drop the fenrisian wolves and go down to two battalions instead of a brigade by adding another HQ. I'll run the numbers and put a redone list up.

I appreciate the ideas. I never even thought of Impulsors to add.

So I took two battalions instead on this one. Which gave me a wolf guard battle leader for rerolls on the advancing portion of my army.

I added powerfists to three of the front Intercessors as well as auto Bolt Rifles. I wanted to add a pair of shield dome Impulsors like you suggested but couldn't find the points for more than one. And I feel like brining one doesn't do much. But maybe, I've never played with them before. Any experience with them solo or not?

I dropped the Eleminator squads for points which gave me a second wolf scout pack to use behind enemy lines to deliver a huge chunk of plasma into the back lines. However, if anyone thinks I could use those points better elsewhere I'm open to it. I thought about dropping the second wolf scout pack to bolster the numbers of the Intercessors, but wasn't sure if that would be better or not.

I also thought about dropping the wolf scouts and shaving some points to grab a second long fang pack.

Again I appreciate any help with this.

I would consider dropping the Wolf Scouts and swapping a squad or two of Intercessors for Incursors. They fill a similar role to Scouts but are far more durable, are Troops and synergise quite nicely with our Chapter trait.

Very cool. Have incursors done well for people? The paired combat blades seem like they can do some work. Is there a way to put a thunder hammer or power fist in with them?

I'm definitely going to drop one of the scouts and try to fit a pair of Impulsors. And might swap two Intercessors for the Incursors, especially to try and dig in and claim enemy zone objectives.

To cut points, I'm also thinking about trading Bjorn for Grimnar. Both are CC monsters but Grimnar has a invulnerable save as well as reroll aura for the firepower coming from the Intercessors. Especially with the added auto Bolt Rifles, I can advance the whole screen for Grimnar while firing the assault weapons with a reroll to counter the -1 to hit penalty. Any thoughts on Bjorn vs Grimnar?

I haven't tried them myself yet but other people have reported very favourably on them. If you can keep them alive until T3, then each 6 in melee becomes really dangerous between their Paired Combat blades and our super-doctrine. Sadly there is no way to put any heavier combat weapons on them so they are probably best used for clearing screens, snagging mid-field objectives and screening our own units.

You mentioned removing the fenrisian wolves. Did they not perform their role well?

"This is not the first time you've been left to fate. I can see it in your manner. It takes something from you doesn't it? Being deserted hollows you out and leaves a void inside. People might say that it hurts, that the psyche aches from the wound. It's not true though. Abandonment does not leave pain. You wished it did because that would be better than the truth. It leaves nothing. Not hope, not pain, not forgiveness."

Their roll was a cheap option to fill in the requirements to get a brigade detachment for the boost in command points.

As far as play, I have done one game so far with them and they supported the screen of advancing intercessors. However they never made assault, but soaked up bolter fire that was meant for my advancing army.

I have to say, the auto Bolt Rifles firing while advancing put a lot of pressure on my opponent. With good rolls they were moving up the field at a good pace while also whittling down his front line.

My MVPs that game were definitely the outflanking Aggressors. I even managed to catch a chaplain dread of his as the closest model and needled him to death off the number of shots and some lucky rolls.

In ITC, Fenrisian Wolves are also very easy points for your opponent.

I never use them (sadly).

I've used 1-2 Cyberwolves hidden in ruins to screen against deep strike, but if there's no safety where I need them, they give away points too easily.

Ah, I didn't think about that. And in my last game all the fenrisian wolves did was rush forward, soak a few shots and assault a khorne berserker unit. Only killing two before being wiped out.

I think I'll drop them for 3 cyberwolves to protect from deep striking my back line just like you said. That also saves me on points to spend elsewhere as well.

Or again, might drop them all together and go with two battalions instead.

So switching to two battalions, which frees enough points for a deep striking plasma/SS termie squad and a battle leader to give reroll wounds to the advancing intercessors. The rune priest also upgrades to Njal.

Still very welcome to criticism and advise. I'll try to take some shots of my next game and give a small battle report with the army.

Haha, even when I edit it, if I don't seperate frost fury, it becomes "froplease be quietry." No idea why. But in my battle rep I'll definitely be referring to it as that from now on haha.

Okay, I brought the list against a friend's Khorne Zerker list. Do to being short on time we decided to do a good ol' beat down to see who would come out alive. No objectives, dawn of war deployment.

He set up first on a industrial building map. Four rhinos with zerkers and HQ beat sticks inside. A daemon prince of Khorne behind the rhinos to shield him. Then he set up three sicaran tanks on his right side. Lastly two squads of cultists on each of his flanks. I won't lie, the three tanks had a lot of firepower and worried me. They also weren't terrible on assault oddly.

I responded by setting up my long fangs in a building dead center of my deployment done. Logan and his intercessors deployed on my right side away from the tanks knowing his rhinos would come for me anyways. Wulfen, Aggressors, and deathwolf in reserve.

Turn one showed me seizing the initiative. Opening a salvo of long fangs on one of his tanks and due to some not that great rolls I managed to hurt it badly but not finish it off.

The Intercessors moved and fired on the rhinos taking a good few wounds off of it. Then frostfury opened up and managed to destroy the rhino. With that, I closed my turn out.

His first turn showed the sicaran tanks laying nnto my long fangs. Cover helped but he got both squads down to one long fang each. Both decided to make their morale saves and stay in the fight.

His army came forward and between some random shots and the daemon prince psychic phase managed to pick off a few intercessors in a few squads even with njal protecting them. He then turned it over to me.

Turn two has my outflanking units begin their hunt. The Wulfen coming on his left flank and absolutely murdering his cultists and then turning towards the hoard of zerkers.

Harald came on his right flank and did the same death dealing to his other cultists. The Aggressors accompanied him and set their sights on those tanks, due to the duo long fangs failing to hit. The pack finished off the wounded one and the other took every wound but the last off the second one. The wolf guard teleported in and almost finished off the last full health tank, leaving it with two wounds from some less than average rolls to wound.

The Intercessors stood their ground at the incoming hoard and opened up with their many assault 3 shots. Grimnars reroll ability was fantastic here. Managing to open another rhino up and take a squad of zerkers down to two. One squad was able to take two wounds off the daemon prince who had gotten to close to that side. Then I turned my turn over.

His turn two showed the wounded sicaran taking out both remaining long fangs. With the fresh one taking out three of one of my aggressors. Oof.

His rhinos let out their cargo and would surely make assault range. They rushed forward with the daemon prince taking the lead. The zerkers did their wonderful attacking twice ability and three intercessor packs crumbled, however one had their power fist pack leader survive. Who promptly became a lone wolf and returned the favor by laying three zerkers low.

The daemon prince assaulted Grimnar himself to which Grimnar gladly received him. The prince took four wounds off Grimnar thanks to some fantastic save rolls. In return Grimnar, using the extra attack on 4+ strategems, did like most mighty space wolves hit and wounded with all his attacks and brought the mighty daemon prince down.

Turn three saw my opponent looking at his army about to but charged by my Wulfen, remaining intercessors, Grimnar and njal with his buffed fury of the Wolf spirits. Also his half dead tanks staring at an angry wolf Lord and Aggressors. All of this causing him to promptly conciede.

All in all, a great win for the wolves. I won't lie, I had some really good rolls between Grimnar surviving a daemon charge and the tanks I was worried of taking two turns to focus on my long fangs. Not to mention seizing the initiative to disable one of the tanks from the start and allowing my turn two outflankimg aggressors and wolf guard to take out the others before they could fire again.

So yeah. Thank you all for helping me get back into this edition and fine tuning my list to bring me back up to speed on our beloved wolves.

Saga of the relic that shall not be named begins with a vehicle kill. Nice work

Haha I didn't even think to give them lone wolf for the rerolls. I figured he would finish them off fairly quickly after but they could have gotten a last laugh and I had the CP.
Greetings, Brothers! In approximately two minutes and four seconds, assuming we are not blown to hell in that time, we will make contact with our opponent. They undoubtedly think they are going to board us, and take our ship as a prize. We shall teach them a different lesson! -- Berek Thunderfist

Dont forget long fangs are usually in the rear so lone wolf makes them untargetable from long range with character protection rules.
Nice way to save your AT weapons from disappearing

Good point. I wouldn't mind having a rerolling untagetable heavy weapon throwing down on the board.

Haha that is great - good showing against a melee army! Glad to see Wolves throw down, and a great debut for The Relic That Shall Not Be Named!
Homebrew Chapter: The Desert Ravens

Not to be confused with the Dessert Ravens, a traitor chapter dedicated solely to pursuing all things covered in an excess of sugar.
