Marshal Vespasian
Question about decals: When putting them on tanks, pauldrons or whatever matte varnish is magic to make them look painted on. I will start on a squad of cataphractii soon and might want ro put decals on their metal trim. I generally do not varnish my metals because it takes the sheen away. So is there a tricl for that painted on look? And to properly seal them? Thanks already!
feuer_faust
You could try brushing on a gloss varnish instead, or try some SolvaSet. Edit: Or Matte first, then gloss over the metals. Edited March 30, 2020 by feuer_faust
Bung
I have Seen Satin Varnish used to keep the shine of metal colors while working with Decals and oil colors for weathering.
sarabando
i like to use Gloss > Matt > Gloss on metallics and gems. It gives a nice finish.

Inquisitor Eisenhorn
This may be controversial but I NEVER prep the surface I'm applying a decal to. I use white vinegar to set it and then microsol to shrink/adhere it it to the surface and then use Lahmian medium to remove the shine. I have some pointy hibby q-tips to push down any final wrinkles.
