Return to the Rock

Hail brothers!

After a lengthy crusade (some 8 earth years or so) I have returned - older, wiser and more grizzled.

According to my reunited profile I joined in 2003 which is somewhat staggering but haven't posted since 2012. Here's the problem - I haven't really painted anything since then either!

A healthy chunk of that time was spent developing a successor chapter the Angels of the Lion with a supportive group of like-minded community members here on this forum. I'm sure most have retired by now but you never know. I'm glad to see the boards here are still such a great source of inspiration and support for hobbyists around the globe.

The DA have always been my chapter of choice since the early 90's and I don't think that will ever change. Just wanted to drop back in, say hi and fast track a whole lot of catching up I have to do. Horus Heresy is It's own game now? Primaris...whaaaa??? There's a LION ELJONSON !?!?!

Welcome back Brother Sandalphon; proceed directly to Chamber 42

Brings a tear to me eyes.. (must be all those dusty tomes...)

@Avoghai!

I'm glad to hear you've maintained the burn, will have to check out what you've been up to :) any increase to the angle of the loin?

Great to see some familiar frater still haunting this place!

Actually no

I’ve sold nearly all my Dark Angels (though kept my terminators) because I’m preparing the big phase out of the non primaris...

And started a primaris unforgiven army based on the star phantoms

Welcome back Sandalphon ! :smile.:

you will find that Primaris marines (even though I'm sad that we will eventually lose old marines) are very nice to paint...

look forward to seeing whatever you do though :happy.:

Cheers, Mithril

Ok so I found this guy and thought I'd do some testing and touching up before I proceed en masse. Paints a bit thick and there are some layers from years ago that probably didn't help but I'm pretty happy with him. All metal including jumppack - I assume (hope) this adds to the roughness as well?

Anyway stay hello to my little friend - chaplain arnoldus aka 'uncle bob'.

I have fond memories of him bashing necron skills amongst others and essentially just chain massacring his way through enemy units..I'm sure the rules have probably moved on now.

The transfer on the shoulder pad, wow.

haha they are so painful.. that was attempt no. 2 i was tempted to look here for tips if it failed again!

trick was some mr. mark softer..and being careful with 15yr old transfer sheets...

Some progress and an another discovery!

So ive embarked on the process of undercoating these guys and have started blocking out the metallics.. not sure 40 at once was a good idea :S

Still not sure they will ALL be DA but likely the 30 with resin bases will be ;)

gallery_5435_16246_422491.jpg

in the meantime i knew i had some missing pieces lying around, some of them are still missing.. like a landraider crusader without any of the crusader bits..why!?

There s an old Belial conversion i was working on before he was released that has been lost to the warp, along with a lot of other bits and pieces..however:

I did find an old box labelled 'kids stuff', and in the old box was a coffee tin with "ravenwing" written on masking tape... Jackpot!

gallery_5435_16246_1368182.jpg

i should probably strip them all to restore them properly but part of me thinks they might be salvageable as is? (maybe not..).. the thought of stripping them all to repaint them black and red is doing my head in a bit.

no comment on the inquisitors poking around.. other than one definitely needs some restoration!

Wow! Almost all beakies. So much history there, the old metal land speeders, Holy cow. They are so good at causing concussions on your opponents when they piss you off, lol! And a metal Dread! So cool! >ll have to post up a pic of my oldest mini some time, an older dreadnaughts then that one. Cool stuff, memory lane paved right over.

Always been a big fan of the old metal speeders. Unfortunately by the time I started painting as a kid they'd been replaced by the plastics.

Looking forward to seeing how this progresses though!

Wickedly ambitious Old School project Brother S.

Watching this with interest...

Cheers brother, to be honest the speeders and dreadnought weren't part of the plan until i found them... they are currently sitting in a jar of paint stripper while i get through the beakies.

Being second ed. they'll compliment the original mkVII force, i have 2 DW dreads, and two black ones (lion guard, long story) one of which will potentially be done in tandem with this one as greenwing... depending how long we're housebound!

ive made progress on the bulk beak force: colour blocking done, bases begun and stripes!

currently using the yellow lense scheme per the box, but not sure how to progress it - thinking red glaze over yellow with white highlight to read more as a glow than a lense/gem effect..

gallery_5435_16246_1790630.jpg

Again they're WIP so i haven't cleaned up the blocking, sharpened stripes, outlined eyes, added highlights etc etc...

gallery_5435_16246_12499.jpg

Here's a bit more detail, i worked up the sgt's face a bit and have started with some details like the hazard stripes etc.

Going with a tapered stripe to match the helmet shape rather than a dead straight and thinner stripe.

Hoping to finish them by the end of the long weekend - see how we go!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey all, thought i'd post an update, i have one going in the WIP forge forum here:

gallery_5435_16246_858957.jpg

they're getting there and im hitting the point where they need insignia - any tips for mass freehand? i probably have 20 odd 2nd ed. transfers but it doesnt sit well with me..

i also managed to find myself a pretty much full command squad that i would have bought on ebay about 15yrs ago - so glad i did!

gallery_5435_16246_1627834.jpg

i have also made some progress on the 3x land speeders:

gallery_5435_16246_1128645.jpg

now all i need is to find some more time!

Awesome work, RTB01 marines were just meant to be painted in the original DA colour scheme!

For the transfers, have you looked at Forgeworld's DA Legion decal sheet? The Chapter/Legion icons look more Rogue Trader-ish than the current Chapter design. https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-GB/FW-Dark-Angels-Legion-Transfer-Sheet-2020

Obviously not available at the moment due to lockdown, but if you can wait till things re-open it might be easier than freehanding all the symbols.
