Tyranids Point Costs

I have been trying to write a fun, but competitve list, however tyranids just seem to suck right now.

Unless your taking 3 units of 6 hive guard with 2 exocrines they just cant seem to compete.

They have so many problems,

1) they dont know if they are supposed to be a shooting army or an assault army and as such dont do either very well

2) they are supposed to be a horde army but hordes suck right now

3) the big scary monsters are not very scary and wayyy over pointed

Just to compare to space marines.

A trygon prime is more expensive than both the redemptor dreadnought and the tactical warsuite, and is just worse. While it has more attacks, it actually has less strength because they are Sx2. This monster which is supposed to be a beast in combat will lose in combat to both these units. They also have far better shooting and 1 extra wound.

The carnifex is the same, it has worse WS and BS then the dreadnough/warsuites, and worse shooting, and far fewer wounds.

Tyranid warriors seem ok for their points, but the tyranid prime...golly gee, he is slightly cheaper than a primaris captain and has no invun.

Swarmlord/Hive Tyrants are ok, but when people are bring lists to bring down knights turn 1 what chance do these guys have. Also for being targetable they are more expensive than daemon princes...which are just better

Hey jgascoine011,

I haven’t played a game with my Tyranids yet so I’d like to ask why are they so bad? They don’t seem completely terrible on paper.

Is it a case that Tyranids are awful or that Marines are just too good atm?

I remember before the latest incarnation of Codex Space Marines they just plain sucked. So needed a boost.

Has the pendulum swung too far I wonder?

Like you say there are some good units (Hive Guard and Exocrines) so I’m hoping I can make my swarm work.

I’m hoping to start playing games again soon, not competitively but I’d like to win the odd game!

How would you go about fixing them? A pts tweak or something more?

Tyranids suffer from a number of problems right now.

The meta right now is high and accurate ROF and/or high Mortal Wound output, along with high survivability something Nids just cant do.

Space wolves for example can take a unit of Wolf Guard Terminators and Arjac and will 1 shot a Hierotitan. No while thats a bit of a stupid example, the fact that 500 points can do that is just insane. Nids also dont really have anything to deal with 3++

Also, while armour saves are generally pointless, because nids lack access to lots of high AP weaponary, its actually the one place armour comes into use.

While yes you could take a strong list and do all right in a casual game, you need to be taking only optimum units to do this.

Things like the nids flyer units are garbage and i am pretty sure the Mawloc is contender for worst unit in the game.

It’s true that if you want to win competitively with nids right now, it’s hard in the current meta. I’m looking forward to a proper update for them.

They need a serious point adjustment. We are a horde army. I’d love to take more of them on the battlefield given the current meta.

I’d also love a comeback of regeneration for more units ( like tervigon).

That said, casually I’m still having a lot of fun with them. Even with the Mawloc :) . Having it pop up and create chaos is just a fun thing to do.
