All that is gold does not glitter - Custodes project log

[Wrath of Bruinen]

Hi everyone,

Progress will be slow going, but I decided to start a project log dedicated to my adeptus custodes. The goal is to build them up to a War in the Webway display board in time for Armies on Parade this year. Here's my first 3 - hope you enjoy!

Wha... alright, about how long does each of those take you? Is that copious amounts of NMM I'm seeing? Good lord. I can barely manage a decent drybrush on my golden boys. Well done.

These chaps look cracking, the purple gives a rather regal feel to them and the bases add to that, whilst also providing a nice neutral field against which to view the figures.

Beautiful work and great colourscheme - i like the mix of gold and silver NMM and the purple and blue are spot on. Bases are really fitting and give them a real sense of place.

 

The only part that seems a little out of place are the brown gloves? it just doesnt seem to appear anywhere else on the minis or compliment the other colours.. other than maybe the warmth of the gold.. not sure what the alternative would be - maybe black to match the halberd, white/bone to tie them in with the bases? or keep the purple going?

 

not trying to nitpick, i spent some time looking at the details (because theyre so well painted!) and then my eye just went to them.. 

 

theyre seriously great and i look forward to seeing more of them!

Yep, I really wanted to push myself with the NMM as its only a new skill I've picked up. It's hard to say how long each one takes as I have a newborn so my hobby time is short and infrequent. At a guess I'd say about 20-30 hours each, although that time is spread out over several weeks.

Thanks for the feedback Sandalphon. The photo doesn't do the gloves justice as it seems to have washed the colour out a little. I do like the brown leather as I think it's a nice soft contrast to the rest of the hard shiny surfaces. But perhaps they need to be brought up by a few more highlight levels to give them a brighter reddy-brown

Update time!

With a better lighting setup, I decided to take some better glamour shots of some of the golden boys...

Additionally, I managed to pick up the beautiful exclusive Custodes Tribune sculpt. In anticipation of the 9th ed Crusade campaign rules I've decided to create a character - Helikaon - and give him some options to hopefully track his progress from vexilus praetor to shield captain to commander. He'll also have the original head (left on sprue for ease of painting for now) and a helmeted option when I pick up another kit. Can't wait to get him on the table!

Managed to get another custodian finished... and it only took 3 months! At this rate I may even have a playable army in time for 10th ed!

Excellent work sir - question of the lore-variety, the purple on the custodes, which caste does he belong to? I know white is essentially a Herald, and black is a Shadowkeeper, but purple?

Cheers! They’re Aquilan Shields - they protect the key figures of the Imperium. Although to be honest I just chose purple because I think it goes well with the gold

Finished the WHW Custodes Tribune. It was an absolute joy to paint this model, probably in my top 3 favourite miniatures of all time.

Update time! Finished off 3 venatari, with 3 more on the table. Absolutely cracking sculpts, the winged jet packs are very majestic and fit the custodes imagery so well
