Table of Content

Inspiration/Creator's notes

Culturally: Revolutionary wars & Imperial France + British Colonial Empire,
Strategically/Tactically: French+British in WW2

(Hundred years wars England & France ?)

Primarchs:
- Alaric Legaillant will be loosely based on the likes of Lord Flasheart, Harry Flashman and Peter Quill. A swashbuckler and fighter ace, he is a pompous yet likeable hero in search for glory... but cares little for actually leading his men.
- Childeric Legaillant will however be loosely based on the likes of Blackadder or Dr. House in personality: while a genius, he is also an acerbic cynic and misanthrope.

Organisation

The Astral Griffons' command structure would be per Principia Bellicosa, but promising aspirants would be singled out before implantation and put into reinforced training and indoctrination before becoming officers and specialists. Promotion from sergeant up to officership would be rare (though not unheard of). Each chapter would have its own veterans, there'd be very little mobility between chapters, from neophyte up to veteran, except for the officers who might change fairly regularly

Pre-primarch legion

The original Terran XII legion would be recruited from the skycities of Old Earth, potentially even Roma. These skycities would fit more of a dieselpunk aesthetic than floating islands.
This ease in the air would then translate into a specialisation in aerial combat, whether conducted from jump pack, land speeder or flyer.

Early battle honours would include the Annexation of Jurfik, and later the conquest of Cassini alongside the Wedal Glaceguard.

By the time of the first inter-legionary war however, the last veterans of the unification wars would have long died out.

Note: Jump Packs would be more used to get into good shooting positions rather than assault.

*Annexation of Jurfik. The Razing is the Blood Wolves' own work.

Fixed. Also added a note following Mikhal's suggestion that the current early tactics could be construed as too close to the Wardens of Light and the Monarchs of Denaus.

I'm keen to use War Heralds for the XII as a pre-Primarch cognomen. Are we good to fix that in place?

Legion Organisation and Disposition
Legion Command Hierarchy
The Astral Griffons' command structure was based on the Principia Bellicosa; promising aspirants were singled out before implantation and put into reinforced training and indoctrination before becoming officers and specialists. Promotion from sergeant up to officership was rare (though not unheard of). Each chapter had its own veterans; and there was very little mobility between chapters, from neophyte up to veteran.

Specialist Formations

  • Antrustiers - Alaric's chosen men and bodyguard. Peerless fighters and gloryhounds, rarely do they go to combat with anything other than a jump pack and some form of sword.
  • Armillary Guard - Elites of the Legion affected to the defense of Astral Griffons' Navigator Sanctums. In practice, few escort ships were ever granted a unit of this vaunted elite, while battleships sometimes had upwards of a score clad in Tactical Dreadnought Armour.
  • Cuirassier Strike Terminators - Clad in Tactical Dreadnought Armour, the Cuirassiers are specialised in drop assaults, spear-heading orbital strikes to punch through defences to reach even the most heavily fortified of objectives.
  • Suppressor Fireteams - Crewed-weapons infiltrators, setting up the likes of Heavy Bolters, Rotor Cannon or Sniper Rifles in concealed cover positions, who emerge to cover the advance of their armour and medium infantry.
