Thunder Talons Shoulder

"This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

- The Terran Warlord Winstion, M2

Cardinal Guard Shoulder

"I hope they cannot see the limitless potential living inside of me. I am the great destroyer."

- The Terran Atomancer Opeheimer, M2

Introduction

Carpathia was not the beginning of the internecine conflict between the Legiones Astartes, but it is often cited in the histories as the greatest opening battle, even if only measured in the sheer destruction wrought between forces met. Acutely studied historians looking back on the event often wonder why those alive had not seen the glaring warnings that disaster was to strike. Such questions go unanswered - the combatants and survivors exist now only as legends and ghosts.

Instigation

(1) And the Clearch said unto his begotten son, "Gather with you your brothers to scour the stars for the traitor, heretofore a wolf's head upon His Imperium."

(2) The Jeracite Captain, who reveled in such unmaking, did as the Clearch commanded, and from the great host of the sacred XIXth sequestered its strength - a band that numbered ten thousands twenty times over, and more still.

(3) Unto this mighty host the Clearch rendered such weapons never unleashed upon the worlds of men - a provenance to sow destruction upon the XIVth.

(4) The Host of the Cardinal Guard, those gathered to trap and rend the Blackhand, was gathered, whose greatest chieftains were: Attico, called Diomedes, called the First Captain and Commander of Praetorians, who rode with the Clearch aboard Dies Raptura, whose force numbered 200; Reynard, named of Altheron, called High Chaplain of the Velocitari, whose vessel was called Path of the Righteous, whose force numbered 57 of his order; Flavias, named of Giordes, called Commander of the 9th Ordinal, whose vessel was called War-Cleric, whose forced numbered 1,904; Alexion, named of Kallistari, called Commander of the 22nd Ordinal and Hero of Harkess, whose vessel was called Vehement Blade, whose force numbered 1,875; Lorencio, named of Cataldere, called Envinsor Superior, whose vessel was called Penitent Oath, and who rallied a host of war-machines and men that numbered 4,629; Boreos, named of Aurec, called Commander of the 54th Ordinal, whose vessel was called Sublime Martyr, whose force numbered 1,997.

(5) These commanders were marshalled, and many more, whose forces numbered in thousands and ten thousands, and who wielded arms at the Clearch's command.

(6) It was that a ghastly angel came in the night to Gaius, and brought visions of the Blackhand, so that the Clearch arrived upon the world of Carpathia.

Name: Carpathia
Segmentum: Segmentum Tempestus
Sector: Carpathion
Subsector: Carpathion
Population: 4.3 Billion
Affiliation: Imperium
Class: Industrial World
Tithe: Exacta

Shadowed by the massive gas giant of Carpathion, Carpathia bustles with refineries and industry, driven by Imperial duty to produce the fuels necessary to maintain the Great Crusade’s voracious needs. Originally settled by colonists travelling in the wake of the 38th Expeditionary Fleet, Carpathia was utilized as a sister to the veritable motherlode of Carpathion - a station created to refine and civilize the unstable fumes of the gas giant into efficient prometheum, fuel for a bevy of war-machines across the Imperium.

Serving as a waystation, refueling point, and occasional place of recruitment for the XIVth Legion,Thunder Talons, Carpathia enjoyed a semi-permanent Astartes garrison, housing several IInd Corps “Star Breakers” detachments across numerous void-stations in orbit of both worlds: Kolwyn, Tandwell, and Dunwish Stations orbiting Carpathion; Amitag, Castine, Laphath, and Posley above Carpathia.

Carpathia, while primarily an industrial world, housed its own planetary defense force, the Carpath 76th Sub-Orbital Lancers, who maintained a strong system cordon along with IInd Corps legionaries - as of 012.M30, considerable preparations were made to ward off a potential surge of greenskin activity arriving from the galactic southwest. Orbital arrays, close-order and synchronous combat drills, and last-breath emergency measures were enacted to ensure system safety in the event of mass xenos attack.

Acting system command was organized under the IInd Corps Legate Olivar Direleth, who directly supervised the Carpath 76th’s professional defenses under Imperial Army Commander Whately Ludwin, and civilian volunteers, formally organized by Upton Pyck, a representative of the Carpath Refiner’s Union. Combined, in a force representing nearly 3,000 marines - of the 6th and 10th Battalions - and over 140,000 mortal soldiers and auxiliaries.

Derived from XIXth Legion Tactical Records

The first shots fired by the aggressing force (XIXth Legion, Cardinal Guard) strike the satellite stations of the gas giant Carpathion around 0534 (Sidereal) on 105.014.M31. The munitions, cogitator-guided macroshells fired by the XIXth Legion Heavy Cruiser Edict of Fire, are precisely aimed and fused, destroying all six of Carpathion's low-orbit fuel extraction stations within a window of a few seconds. As the rest of the XIXth Legion fleet translate in system from behind the cover of the gas giant, the dozens of smaller stations in low orbit detonate or lose power as a result of the rippling explosive effect. Roughly three thousand souls, all civilian fuel workers, are lost, all for the explicit purpose of masking their arrival from the true targets of the attack.

Appropriately, considering the unanticipated nature of the attack, a Thunder Talon is first to die. Legionary Alecs Skrelth, Fourth Company, Ninth Battalion, of the defending force (XIVth Legion, Thunder Talons), by all means a rising star within 4th Company, is performing regular maintenance on a Legion-modified Xiphon Interceptor (lovingly named Scorched Sabre fifteen years prior) when he spies the tell-tale glint of an inbound macro-shell flying through the void. The shell, on a course for collision with Kolwyn Station, in high orbit above Carpathion, arrives at its destination. Alecs, moving decisively to warn the rest of the Fourth Company contigent stationed onboard, is incinerated along with his brothers as the station's fuel reserves are ignited and Kolwyn Station explodes. When his body burns, Alecs is already dead. The shell, impacting directly with Scorched Sabre and sending white-hot ceramite shrapnel across Kolwyn Station's hangar bay, claims his life.

The remaining Carpathion high-orbit defense stations, Dunwish and Tandwell, are destroyed in similar manner, committing the remainder of 4th Company, stationed across Carpathion's high-orbit to the void. Ninety-nine souls, from Legionary Alecs Skrelth to Flight Sergeant Linal Hurphath, who spends his last agonizing moments suffocating in the void after a rapid depressurization in the Tandwell Station ready room, all perish. 4th Company's sole survivor, aboard the Eye of the Storm for a XIVth Legion Commander's Call, is Captain Herris Magrat, whose remaining life is numbered in hours.

Poised to pounce upon Carpathia, the XIXth Legion Fleet reconstitutes itself enroute to the system's eponymous world. At the lead is the Primarch Haedran, on board Dies Raptura. Not yet known to August Veramn, Primarch of the XIVth Legion, Thunder Talons, Haedran intends to kill his brother in one swift motion. He believes this is his part to play in squashing the nascent rebellion.

Haedran, the Clearch, is mistaken - he will not kill August Veramn.

Not at Carpathia.

Derived from XIXthe Legion Tactical Records

At approximately 0617 (sidereal), the first death-knells of Kolwyn, Dunwish, and Tandwell stations are received by augury receptors in the XIVth Legiones Astartes, Thunder Talons, fleet. Tenders and their warships on the periphery of Carpathia's orbit are first to hear the stations’ dirge. Commanders on board the Dawn Charger, Iron Stallion, Lady of the Plains, and Stormwright are notified. Around 0620, the signal reaches Thunder Talons flagship Eye of the Storm, still tethered to Laphath Orbital Fuel Relay for final repairs and refueling after a much needed dry dock.

The screams of Fourth Company, Ninth Battalion resound in a haunting melody. For the mortal crew unlucky enough to hear it, the suffering of these first victims of Haedran’s attack will inhabit their nightmares.

August Veramn, Primarch of the XIVth Legiones Astartes, Thunder Talons, reacts swiftly, but does not retaliate. Hoping beyond measure that a mistake of gross caliber has been made, he readies his legion - like a challenged Torrentar, August prepares to stand his ground in defense. The XIVth Legion makes ready to repel - newly repaired vessels in high orbit hastily load ammunition, and a contingent of Ninth Battalion warriors, under the command of Fifth Company Captain Osker Falren, prepare Laphath Orbital Fuel Relay for point defense, deploying across the spaceport’s myriad levels and docks.

Warning hails are sent to the aggressing force’s encroaching fleet. Direct response is not given, but select channels are opened by the XIXth Legion, broadcasting hymns and war-songs yet unheard by ears outside the Cardinal Guard. These are declarations of the XIXth Legion’s worship of the Emperor of Mankind, once secret, now brazen.

The coming battle is heralded by song.

By approximately 0643 (sidereal), August Veramn has fully abandoned any conclusion that his forlorn brother may be making some error. The XIVth Legion fleet, now arrayed in a defensive formation around the system, prime lances and load macrocannons. Targets are found in the attacking XIXth Legion fleet, firing solutions are calculated, and fleet staff tensely wait at their stations for an engagement order from the Blackhand. At approximately 0652, August Veramn gives the command.

Dawn arrives early to the city of Laphath. The morning sky, colored in dark blues before, is peppered by bright starbursts as weapons of astronomical size and caliber release their munitions.

The ships of the Cardinal Guard stagger in their advance. Several escorts and pickets, caught in the path of a void-titan's barrage, die violently in magnificent blazes. The XIXth's larger vessels, such as the Sublime Martyr and the Andronicius, are hit and lose critical systems.

Despite the nascent war burning outside, the hangars and ready chambers of the Cardinal Guard are deathly silent. Throughout the fleet, the scarlet-clad warriors of the XIXth Legion kneel in huddled circles - armed, armored, and yet un-helmed. Across the void of space and the sound and fury of war, the Cardinal Guard share a solemn prayer, devoting the coming battle to the glory of their God-Emperor and all His Saints. It is an invocation for strength in combat, and a request for divine intercession against the foe. Deep in the hearts of many who make this prayer, something sinister dwells; a malign opportunity to punish the Thunder Talons for alleged slights. In the purest of the Cardinal Guard's paladins' souls, there is only duty and despair.

At approximately 0714, the first of the XIXth Legion's fighters, dropships, and fighters leave their motherships and begin their descent towards the surface, spearheaded by Legate Heliod Atraxian, 19th Cohort, 10th Ordinal. Captain Atraxian has been ordered to attack the Laphath Orbital Fuel Relay.

He will open the way.
