Derived from XIXth Legion Tactical Records
The first shots fired by the aggressing force (XIXth Legion, Cardinal Guard
) strike the satellite stations of the gas giant Carpathion around 0534 (Sidereal) on 105.014.M31. The munitions, cogitator-guided macroshells fired by the XIXth Legion Heavy Cruiser Edict of Fire,
are precisely aimed and fused, destroying all six of Carpathion's low-orbit fuel extraction stations within a window of a few seconds. As the rest of the XIXth Legion fleet translate in system from behind the cover of the gas giant, the dozens of smaller stations in low orbit detonate or lose power as a result of the rippling explosive effect. Roughly three thousand souls, all civilian fuel workers, are lost, all for the explicit purpose of masking their arrival from the true targets of the attack.
Appropriately, considering the unanticipated nature of the attack, a Thunder Talon is first to die. Legionary Alecs Skrelth, Fourth Company, Ninth Battalion, of the defending force (XIVth Legion, Thunder Talons
), by all means a rising star within 4th Company, is performing regular maintenance on a Legion-modified Xiphon Interceptor (lovingly named Scorched Sabre
fifteen years prior) when he spies the tell-tale glint of an inbound macro-shell flying through the void. The shell, on a course for collision with Kolwyn Station, in high orbit above Carpathion, arrives at its destination. Alecs, moving decisively to warn the rest of the Fourth Company contigent stationed onboard, is incinerated along with his brothers as the station's fuel reserves are ignited and Kolwyn Station explodes. When his body burns, Alecs is already dead. The shell, impacting directly with Scorched Sabre
and sending white-hot ceramite shrapnel across Kolwyn Station's hangar bay, claims his life.
The remaining Carpathion high-orbit defense stations, Dunwish and Tandwell, are destroyed in similar manner, committing the remainder of 4th Company, stationed across Carpathion's high-orbit to the void. Ninety-nine souls, from Legionary Alecs Skrelth to Flight Sergeant Linal Hurphath, who spends his last agonizing moments suffocating in the void after a rapid depressurization in the Tandwell Station ready room, all perish. 4th Company's sole survivor, aboard the Eye of the Storm
for a XIVth Legion Commander's Call, is Captain Herris Magrat, whose remaining life is numbered in hours.
Poised to pounce upon Carpathia, the XIXth Legion Fleet reconstitutes itself enroute to the system's eponymous world. At the lead is the Primarch Haedran, on board Dies Raptura.
Not yet known to August Veramn, Primarch of the XIVth Legion, Thunder Talons
, Haedran intends to kill his brother in one swift motion. He believes this is his part to play in squashing the nascent rebellion.
Haedran, the Clearch, is mistaken - he will not kill August Veramn.
Not at Carpathia.
