Black Legion Standard Paint Scheme

Recommended Posts

Now that I have a little time on my hands...

Who knows the standard Black Legion paint scheme used by GW in their books? Asking about the paints used, what does GW use for their edge highlighting?

My impression was it's Dark Reaper followed by Russ Grey. Tried it and got very different results.

They vary slightly depending on who they had paint the models, but Incubi Darkness was used as the first highlight for the Box art on all the Shadow Spear Legionaries, and while they didn't specify what technique they used, I think they glazed the color on rather than just jump right into the edge highlights.  Darren Latham had a black tutorial (along with quite a few other color schemes), mostly to demonstrate some of the techniques they use at the 'Eavy Metal team rather than specific highlights, and it is a lot of glazing.  I think his videos are still up on YouTube until the end of the month.

I am finding I get better results with Incubi glaze, then building up to Thunderhawk and Russ grey, then going over it all of the paint with some Coelia Greenshade to bring it back down a bit before doing the extreme point highlights.  Once I finish my terminator squad, I will put pictures of the Legion terminators on my WIP thread, but they are really where I am starting to experiment with using Incubi Darkness.  It will probably be a case of the last one done will look a LOT better than the first.

I have other black legion models in that thread, I tend to experiment with how I want to do the black.  A lot of the recent ones are done with Black Templar.

Yeah, box art and what it says on the back of the box for paint rarely match in my experience when followed.

Yeah, it used to be that the 'Eavy Metal paint scheme for armies would get an article in WD.  Not the standard paint scheme, but the actual 'Eavy Metal team paint scheme that they used.  For example, original paint for Blood Angels used "Blood Red" as the base color, but the 'Eavy Metal team had an official paint formula, and they would start with Terracotta.

I miss those articles, to the point that I actually rarely buy a White Dwarf anymore, because the actual 'eavy Metal painting guides were the main reason I bought it.

Also....just as a personal note....BL haven't always had full gold trim either. Mine have the gold only on the shoulder trim. Everything else is silver trim but this does hark back to earlier editions. But I have found that with so much gold going on it loses the focuses of the black! XD

Reminds me of the articles in WD around the release of the 3.5 codex, where the 'eavy metal team outlined their approach to the Black Legion. I much preferred that to the all-gold of today

Yeah my old BL were gold trim pads, rest silver, some had green eyes others red, goblin green rims. Ah memories. Green eye lenses look better than the red ones on the old scheme IMO
